So I'm thinking about what my nickname should be for when SC2 releases. A lot of the progamer names seem really random (Stork? Luxury? Movie? The fuck?) but something about them gives them a great RTS/starcrafty feel. Do they turn to a random page in their favourite book and take the 54th word as their name? Who knows.
I'm exploring what some English words sound like in Korean. I know the word "dagger" sounds like "bisu" not surprisingly, but I'm having a hard time finding a translator and a quick search of TL revealed about a thousand "help pls rly wat this korean say 2me" threads and not english-into-korean-word-that-i-can-read-aka-not-a-little-symbol-type translator tool. Anyone know how to say "brown" or "quick" in Korean, or can link me to a translator? I'm not looking for the symbol, but the phonetic English alphabet version (like "bisu" is to "dagger").
Whether or not you can tell me those words would be great, so thanks in advance. I'm also curious if anyone knows how or why some progamer names are what they are, and what methods people here use to choose a nickname.

I think quick: p'ali brown: galsaeg
Try google translate for more romanized korean translations. http://www.google.com/ig
I don't think this thread will be up long
|
pick whatever. its an alias for a reason. you can always change it... mine on TL is based off my name. i shouldnt be hard to guess what my name is.
|
Movie's actual Korean name means "movie", afaik.
|
I'm a MGS fanboy, hence my handle.
Alot of the Korean ID's came from a period where every one was making one word English ID's and it became fashionable to do so. e.g. Nada, Reach, Yellow, January, Autumn, July. Progamers like themarine and neo_g_soulkey are the exception rather than the rule.
|
nada isn't an english word
and neo.g_soulkey is a relatively new player
|
I think "Paper" is a great name.
|
lol you're a nice guy
Anyway, are u looking for sth that sounds good in korean and english? Cuz that's hard... good luck lol, there aren't THAT many that I can think of off the top of my head.
edit:

Nada in Korean means "It's me", I'm relatively sure that's how it came into being.

Hit the box for "show romanization" Oh wow, I had no idea that feature existed. Thanks!
Mykill - Michael. Nice
are u looking for sth that sounds good in korean and english? Yeah exactly. Bisu is an amazing name in English and it's not even a word...
|
well, I open the dictionary then look for a word, if it aint cool enough I'll go look for an anagram of it.
|
Jorge w. Bosh is an awesome name too! :D
|
|
|
Your play will make your name awesome, not the other way around.
|
Just take one from one of day9's casts.
For example: apparently rekrul once got knocked out of wcg by the fearsome monkey_balls.
|
|
lol so you want your opponent's to think you're a cool hip young korean RTS pro with a dashing sense of aliases?
Brown - "GalSsaek"
Quick - "Bballi"

Guemchi:
his full ID is actually Sea.GuemChi, which basically reads like the korean word for spinach (see gumchi)

I always assumed that he got the double meaning, and when I said English words, I really meant non-Korean romanizations.

you're name is probu so you should be proberto

My name was originally WrekThaDiscotek, from a song that was in the original blade movie. I've had alot of aliases and this one is simple and unique so I kept it.
|
My alias would be pretty unoriginal. TyRanT, Hawk, and Wraith (I have Hawk and Wraith @ USEast :D) are pretty much my favorite names ~_~
|
|
Alias suggestions:
Don't use random capital letters, any numbers, video game/anime/pop-film character names, etc.
|
instead of jaedong be jay dong :D

Good news everyone: I now know what romanize means. Thanks for the enlightenment : )
I feel less nerdy seeing as I'm not the only one who has opened a dictionary or thesaurus searching for an alias. I think there is about a three month period in any nerds life where anythng Latin is cool. After that and you realize how much of a tool you are.
I have a friend who I would not describe as creative. Every one of his names is something he could see from his desk at the time. I thought him using the name DentyneIce made it obvious that he did that...then he made the name Lamp'. He needed the punctuation because Lamp was taken. Guess he's not the only one guilty of looking around the room for a name ; ) Maybe that's what BackHo did!
|
guys just pick the most generic name you can think of, then stick some numbers behind it and you're all set

Use a fancy word (10 letters minimum) from science or medicine. This will make others to falsely think that you are smart.

You have to pick a name that goes along with your inner loner, that tells everyone else "I'm a BAMF." Pick a name like "sniperwolf" or "shadow wolf" or "darkwolf" or "wolf reaper" or "reaper wolf" or "alpha wolf helix"
jk obv...

Aren't you reading it the other way around? As in the names aren't RTS-like, it's just the korean progamers use names like that.
At this rate, the future will have advice columns in fashion magazines for picking a screen name.

Wow considering superiorwolf's age that actually makes a lot of sense now .

Just modify YOUR name in some ways, like translating into other languages etc... My name in Korean is kkoekkoli. Can't even spell it.

Surprised we got to 3 pages and this hasn't been linked yet.
If your goal is to be a "f33red k0r34n z3rg" then may I direct you to the guide from this very website:
"how to become a f33red k0r34n z3rg on wcg/wsl".
Step 1 of this guide is picking a name.
step 1) make a user name. i recommend picking a noun and then adding zerg at the end of it. EX: AfricaZerg
remember, you have to look convincing so that your opponent will fear of playing you. so, pick a random noun. the more stupid you look, the more skilled you we be percieved of having. EX: TamponZerg

I should add that the same applies to adding -toss at the end. For example PadToss.
Note that it is also acceptable to use 'toss-' if you play Terran.
:D

Haha best name in the thread

I'm unoriginal so I tend to pick stuff that matches my name... Like dropping the H from psychopath, or truncating & concatenating my names to wind up with Patch...
Either that or random made-up names (ala Torgal) or cool obscure monsters from various games/realms, like Braxat or something. Meh.

Good names: Don't try to make themselves badass, and aren't punny. I mean, for legendary people. Personally, I like funny names, but they don't make for an "oh damn it's him name". They are aslo simple so people can remember them/don't try to shorten them.
Savior Paper Piano Bisu
It also helps to have a nice strong connotation associated with the literal word that is your name, but it's obviously not necessary
Bad names: basically violate the two rules above, with some exceptions. Some names just don't sound cool (eg. Movie)

I'm always Romantic or NoHabloIngles on most games. Having a name which allows you to troll in-game is pretty sweet.
|
noob i think would fit you quite well.

My nick is "Safetoss" or "s4f3t0s5". My friends always complain about me cheesing or going all-in when I play with them, so I chose the name in an ironical way, sort of.
|
Bad player always complain about their mate... I usually go for fast expand mass tower, and get flamed... just cauz they don't know my style!!
Do like me, take a nick from manga or something, then you will look freeking BAD ASS!!! (Don't take pussy character like Naruto or gay style like Sasuke, or you will get flamed each time you enter a game).
