A patient lost a testicle during an operation because the surgeon cut it off by mistake, a General Medical Council (GMC) hearing has been told.
Dr Sulieman Al Hourani was only supposed to cut out a cyst, but removed the whole right testicle instead.
Dr Al Hourani was a locum surgeon at Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, Greater Manchester, at the time of the surgery in September 2007.
He is accused of misconduct and also of stealing medication.
It is alleged the doctor, who is now practising in Jordan and was not present at the hearing, also injected himself with a drug meant for a patient.
Sarah Prichard, counsel for the GMC, said the mistake was made as a nurse helping the surgeon turned her back to get a stitch.
When she turned around the testicle had been removed.
all i can say is... DAMN! the surgeon took out one balls within the timeframe of that nurse takes to turn her back for a while.... is this surgeon a skill-less newbie or is he a master ball cutter?
in all seriousness, i don't even know what to say this is like some horror stories u heard about. i mean just imagine when u woke up from a minor surgery and the doctor tells u that they've cut ur balls off by mistake.
one balls up for the NHS i guess...

It's only one instance of a doctor doing something like this. I'm not sure, but mistakes like this happen more frequently than it's comforting to think about.
Overall I think the general public places too much trust in the medical profession. Honestly they have a ton of power. Although most doctors sincerely want to help people, the average person is not going to think twice about swallowing a pill or getting a shot from a doctor and doctors can abuse this power (like this fellow did).

I'm assuming this is incompetence rather than abuse. Unless he sold the testicle on the black market it sounds more like a balls up.
