Well, I chose my ID for two reasons: 1. I once had a Commodore C64 which I freakin' adored (until it broke -.-) and also because of my dream car, the '71 Opel Commodore GSE. Google it, it's absolutely beautyful

), but later my teammates shortened my name simpy to Zhul according to my playstyle. (in czech zhul: someone who smokes weed too much :D)

My group of friends in high school was oddly comprised of people with mostly the same name. We had like 3 Robbies, multiple Chriss, multiple Matts etc. So we all got unimaginative nicknames (well some of us had good ones, but mostly not). I ended up as MattyC. I was too lazy to come up with a game nickname so I just used that.

Years later I went to a Day of Defeat LAN event in Atlanta (think it was Fraglanta, but not 100%) on the 'friends team'. Basically a bunch of guys who were just going to watch our friends who actually played competitively and decided 'why don't we just make a team for fun'. Anyway we were seeded last and had to play the previous years winner first game. I did surprisingly well. While we lost handily I never let the other team all cap. I would always hop out at the last minute or whatever. After the game when I went back into the spectator area where people had been watching on the projector my friends had got people to chant MattyClutch. I thought it was hilarious and just went with it from there.

REad a book called "The Winter King" by Bernard Cornwell has a druid in it named Tantaburs used it as a druid name when i first made on in WoW didn't Thing it fit a druid so used it when i made my Warrior. been using it ever since.

Mine is a Phish reference. I don't remember when it was, but fans were chanting loudly for a song and Trey said into the mic "Mike says no" and they went immediately into a different song. I decided to don this as my ID after going to my first Phish concert, and running into some hippie that was selling t-shirts with "Mike says no." on them outside of the show. I was pretty drunk and bought the shirt. The ID I used back then was terrible, so I just filled in mikesaysno for some game I was playing back then and have kept it ever since.

It's unique, and confuses people since my name isn't Mike, but I don't think I'll ever change it.

Mine is from when I first played Runescape in 2001...
The combat instructor's name on tutorial island was Dezzick, I thought I was all combat-y so I went through the alphabet and Tezzick sounded the best.
I can't believe I remember that after 10 years...

Was supposed to do Chemistry homework. Played Counterstrike instead. To remind myself that I had to do Chemistry, I chose Dimethyl as name. Kept it for quite some time. Started playing WoW a few years later when it was released and chose Dymethyl because it looked cooler.
Everyone called me Dyme (though they pronounced it German obviously, like Düme. Don't know how to make ü-sound in English), well, anyways it is way nerdier than urbandictionaries definition of dyme "1. A female deemed to be a 10 on a scale of 1-10, extremely attractive ". And way less female.
But I am not Korean, so I can't just switch my ID all the time.

I went through a phase in my adolescence where I focused all of my attention on various forms of writing (prose, poetry, etc). Many felt that my writing was exceptional for my age due to the structure of the poetry and the language used. Through my eyes, though, I was simply a pretentious student that used various forms of circumlocution to persuade my audience that I knew more than I actually did (at the age of 13, this isn't entirely uncommon). I felt I wasn't truly as good as I was given credit for, although many felt I may have originated from the testicles of Shakespeare himself.

I was writing an essay for a particular piece discussing forms of military attacks and strategies and how they've evolved over the centuries. My goal was to emphasize how technology has allowed for people to generate more pernicious attacks while using less resources (simple essay, but I felt the need to elaborate). The example I used for a resource-loaded method of attack was a phalanx formation used predominantly by the ancient Greeks. An example I used to describe a resource-light method of assault was an anthrax attack, citing examples of its use dating back to the early 1900s. To apply more pretention to the article, I created a word that described a dramatic shift in attack procedures over time: phalthrax.

A few months later I acquired Diablo 1, which happened to be the first video game I had played that allowed for internet-based multiplayer. Since I needed a handle, I decided to choose that clever word that I had come up with a few weeks prior. Sounded quite catchy, and people seemed to enjoy creating unique nicknames from it (PT, PH, phal, PThrax, etc). Many people recognized me by the name, so I decided to continually use that handle in future game releases so that friends could easily follow where I was and what I was doing. Since then, I've used the handle in practically every forum and game that I've played. I had to be clever in Guild Wars, though, since it required a first and last name. I'm fairly certain you can guess what I used: Phal Thrax.

I still enjoy the ID quite a bit

Recently changed IDs for the onset of SC2 (my last one was from when I was 11)

They might be giants made an album for kids called "Here Comes Science." On it is the most amazing song ever about a magical elf that creates rainbows. Since my DJ name is DJ rainbow, I figured RoyGBiv was an adequate handle

Well mine is a semi-long story.

It all started when I was playing WoW back in college. I didn't know anyone else that played until I met a guy in one of my classes that played. I was desperate to play with someone I knew so I rolled a troll priest on his server. Since this wasn't my main I decided to come up with a joke name which ended up being Ovulicious (a Simpsons reference).

Eventually, that guy quit the game and I decided to make my priest my main but I didn't wanna have Ovulicious as my name. This was back in classic so there were no paid name changes yet so I ended up reporting myself for having an offensive name and the GM was kind enough to let me change it! I had a naming convention with my other characters where I would name them after street names near where I live, so I picked my priest's name as Nordhoff, which is the street my college was on.

Fast forward to BC, my priest is still my main, but I hated playing trolls. They were so ugly. Why couldn't I have rolled as a sexy blood elf priest? I thought to myself, "But Nordhoff isn't exactly a good name for a female priest... Something like Nordia would be a lot better..." When WotLK came out and I switched mains from my troll priest to my female blood elf paladin I knew the exact name to change it to... But! Nordia was taken! WTF! Ah well I'll just stick an "h" on the end. Hence my paladin was named Nordiah.

Now in my new guild, one guy had named his alt "Robogarim" as his mains name was Garim. Everyone started copying him: "Roboysa", "Robostreamer" and it sounded funny to me. So I made an alt called Robonord right there. When SC2 came out, I couldn't use the name Nordiah because it was too feminine so I stuck with Robonord.

I love firefly, but all the good names were always taken or too long or what have you, so I settled on HeroofCanton (aka the man they call Jayne) and now everyone thinks I'm either from Ohio or China.

I was drinking a vodka tonic when I made my SC2 ID. Voda is water in Russian, and the diminuitive form - vodka - translates literally as little water.

My username is kind of a literal translation of my nickname my mother used to call me (a fox's child is really a kit, but there was no way to make that cool enough for a username). I always felt that it was really awkward to say until I realized reversing the words makes it much more natural (foxkid, so I name changed it on bnet). I'm thinking of changing my name to something simpler like "curly", because of my ridiculously curly hair and one of my favorite characters, Curly Brace from Cave Story.
