Getting a new keyboard/mouse.. Wireless or not?

So my dad promised to get me a new keyboard and mouse for my birthday. My problem is, should I get wireless or wired? I'm sure this has been asked before on this forum, but I'm sure wireless technology is improving quickly so bear with me.

For gaming purposes, I've heard many negative reviews about wireless keyboards/mice due to the split second lag. The same thing was said about flatscreens some time ago however, and I don't have any problem with the current refresh rates (2ms i believe). I don't really know how the current wireless technology is doing. How laggy is it really?

Some people will say about wired keyboards/mice "If it ain't broken, don't fix it". Well, there's one thing bothering me about wired mice. The wire seems to always slightly affect my mouse movement. If I just let the wire hang over the other end of my (physical) desktop, there's a slight pull upward. That's why I generally pull up the wire a bit and put a book or something heavy on the edge of my desktop on top of the wire. This removes the slight pull upward, but the bend in the wire then affects movement to the sides. So there's is something to be gained in a wireless mouse (not having to deal with this slight annoyance).

Now specifics, which keyboard and mouse (wired or wireless) would you advice me to get? Of course I plan on playing Starcraft 2 when it comes out, but other than that I usually play RPGs and other slower paced games. I currently own some random Microsoft keyboard (Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000) and a Logitech Mx510 optical mouse.

Please post your experiences with wireless keyboards and mice. Here's a poll if you can't be bothered with a reply!

Poll: Wireless or wired?
(Vote): Wired. I never had any problems, so why go wireless?
(Vote): Wired. I tried wireless but I didn't like it.
(Vote): Wireless. The slight delay is unnoticable with the newest technology.
(Vote): Wireless. The advantages outweigh the slight delay even in games.

It's all relative to what you prefer... Beside the battery factor there is as little difference as there would be between brands.

Not sure about the keyboard, but I never liked the extra weight of wireless mice. I have the Razer Mamba, and the response time is good enough, but I think the battery makes it too heavy compared to my Deathadder.

Yes I'm a Razer fanboy, have been since the first TSL.

wireless keyboard last long enough between new batteries now of days that i would get one it's nice if you don't like wires as much as i don't like them. Mice i'd still keep wired if you play games.

Just don't use rechargeable batteries in keyboards unless you do like a 100,000 keystrokes every week as you'll find they don't last nearly as long as alkaline batteries. If you want a keyboard that recharges i'd get a rechargeable keyboard but they usually cost a pretty penny but they are also usually pretty.

Well when I play on my laptop, I'm on my laptop keyboard and a wireless logitech mouse(I think it's VX or MX or something like that), usually fine with just that.

Wired--Especially for keyboards; I've used wireless mice, they're okay... wireless keyboards have pretty bad response time in general.

Yes to this. I had a microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse and the keyboard would occasionally miss characters and be unresponsive. It didn't really feel more convenient either because of the wireless receiver that you need sticking out the back of your computer.

I bet a nice logitech or other brand name wireless mouse wouldn't have any response problems, but wired has always been fine for me.

wireless is retarded for gaming period. Be it internet or peripherals.
the 3 reasons it sucks for a mouse, 1) the mice are generally heavier because there is more shit inside and batteries. 2) needs to be recharged, if you forget and/or it wears out in game GOOD LUCK, 3) There is that slight bit of delay in response/latency which is bad.

There are things you can buy to deal with a mouse cord. Progamers use these things.
..and then I would, ya know, check em'. (Aka SpoR)

I use a Logitech LX-8 wireless mouse, and it's terrible. It's just so heavy, so gaming is ridiculously painful with it. Delay and connectivity issues are nothing compared to the weight.

I went with
Wired. I never had any problems, so why go wireless?

But then again I've never had a wireless mouse/keyboard.

keyboard - maybe the notorious samsung dt-35 if you got teh monies
just make sure you're not playing SC on like a laptop keyboard where all the keys are too close together or too easy/hard to press

mouse - make it optical, and preferably bigger than your palm (w/o fingers)

get wired on both, and dont go too fancy with the mouse

I agree with the OP about cords messing with movement. I am no progamer, but my Logitech wireless mouse works fine. I have had it for 7 months and just changed the batteries for the first time about two weeks ago. I almost prefer the weight of batteries, it seems to make it easier to make small adjustments quickly. I guess it is a matter of personal preference.

As far as a keyboard, I use a 20th century white PS2 keyboard and I love it! I have never had it miss a keypress, and I actually like the primitive layout with no fancy email, web browser, Media Player preset buttons and scroll wheels all over it.

I would never use a wireless keyboard.. response time is horrible.

Wireless mouse i'm on the fence.
I'v used both a wired mouse and a wireless one, currently I use a wired one. I like the wired one 100x better than the wireless one.. this might be because the wireless one was very cheap and the wired one I have now is rather expensive, but I like to think its just the wire difference. ; )

I've heard about a wireless delay before, but I fucking love my wireless mouse.

Basically, I can't stand the slight tugging of a the cord on the mouse every time I move it around. I guess I'm really picky about it but it's a lot more comfortable and makes things a lot easier. It also gets rid of some wire clutter.

I don't notice any delay in game either.

You COULD get a nice wireless mouse, and then have a nice cheapo gaming mouse (like the ones people say are good for SC) to switch between if you feel the need to.

Higher level wireless mice are expensive. No guarantee about latency either.

I find wireless mice a little weird because theres no tension from a cord being around. Keyboardwise, I haven't found a wireless one that matches the same comfort for gaming as the one I use now.

Any usb 2.0 mice that can be set to inter-pooling at 1000hz works fine that's the lowest delay currently, i haven't seen test on delay of usb 3.0 but it does offer some interesting things as it is full-duplex vs just half-deplux of the older gen. meaning it can send and receive data at the same time although more of a nice thing for external hdd's it may have other benefits.

imo latency under 150ms is nothing that's under human reaction time and people adjust to playing with lag unless you're playing in a tournament for money or something it's fine.

I personally hate wired mouses but i know they are better for gaming, but i am currently using the Raser Mamba and it works really well, i cant tell its wireless by the delay(there is no delay that i can detect) then again the mouse like expensive

I personally would stick with Wired, at least for the next couple of years. Maybe if we survive 2012 I'll reconsider my stance then.

I didn't bother to read any replies as you already have one of the best mice out there and IMO the Mx-518 is THE best mice but the upgrade is one that is almost non existent. As for keyboards it almost doesn't matter what you use as long as it got a cord. A lot of people prefer cheep keyboards with hard buttons just because it's easy to hit confirm and you don't really have to worry about breaking it while abusing it...

the conclusion is the you got a great mice and the only thing that really matters about keyboards is that it got a cord so you never have to worry about batteries and slightly reduced lag but on a keyboard its almost impossible to notice.

EDIT: on your cord problem I do the similar thing but you have to have the right length between your mice and you book (in my case a use a pile of cd-cases). for me I have my cd-cases about 5 cm from the to edge of my mouse pad and the I pull the cord until the cord will make one lop between the cases and the mice when its centered on my mouse pad.

Depend on what game you are going to play. If you mainly play online games like WoW wireless is fine.
If you play more SC/SC2 go for wired keyboard and mouse.
I borrow my friend's wireless mouse and keyboard to play on ICCUP about a year ago and it went bad...heavy mouse, bad response from keyboard etc...
But wireless has a factor of cool in it ^^

As far as the wireless vs wired arguement:Wired all day everyday, the input lag from wireless unless you buy an extremely expensive mouse+Keyboard is more than noticeable. and on topic:

Personally there is a lot out there you want to consider when buying a new mouse and keyboard, if you play a lot of MMOs I would STRONGLY recommend the Steel series Wow mouse (works great for SC2 as well) + Show Spoiler +
[image loading]
I've had it since release and while it looks a little rough ALL the buttons still work on it (None are shaky/have ever gotten sticky) and it feels amazing in your hand (Used to get wrist strain with my old Microsoft sidewinder) with 3600 DPI to boot. Also I remember reading somewhere that there will be custom keybinds and possibly macroes in SC2 so the more buttons on your mouse the better no?

As far a keyboard goes, generic ones seem to work very well for me, it's all preference there though I have a 15$ ergonomic keyboard from microsoft -_-''.

TLDR:Recommended mouse + Show Spoiler +

I am able to play Diablo II ok with a wireless logitech mouse, but not Starcraft. Although, I'm used to a wired mouse, I suppose you could get used to anything.

I've never had any luck with wireless keyboards. I've only tried a Microsoft desktop suite one. It always seems to miss a few characters out of a thousand.

Back when i first started Starcraft I used a wireless Logitech mouse, atm im unsure of which model it was. I found it skipped very often, the clicking and tracking was unreliable, and batteries often died in the worst times.

When i would slide the mouse across the screen, it surely wasn't a smooth path. The lines were jumping and blinking all over the place, it was a real hassle. I then switched to my stock microsoft optical wired mouse thta i had hidden away in a droor. The difference was amazing. Complete control and precision. I have only used 1 wireless mouse ever, but my experience was quite bad.

Hope this helps!

I don't know if current wireless technology is able to have high precision and no delay with wireless. I used to have a wireless mouse, it was a bit choppy, so I switched back immediately.

I just got a logitech wireless mouse. Basically the same thing as the logitech g500 wired mouse, but slightly more dpi. Basically if the mouse has really good dpi and a comfortable feel, there is no noticeable lag. As far as keyboards go, the lag is negligible, yet making it wireless adds about 20$. Since wires don't affect the smoothness factor in the way that they affect mice (since the wire is never going to have to move) i'd say go for a good wireless mouse and a decent wired keyboard (I recommend logitech or razer for either.)
P.S. Also, any logitech/razer mouse that merits decent gaming nowadays comes with two ways to charge it: Plugging into a wall socket to charge while the computer is off, or plugging it into a usb port to charge while you play. And the mouse i have can go for two days straight before it needs a recharge. I play all day and it says "full" before i go to bed)

Thanks for all the replies guys. I will go shopping tomorrow afternoon for an expensive wireless mouse (hey, my dad's paying anyway) and a relatively cheap wired keyboard.

Specifically I'll look for the Razer Mamba and any curve keyboard that looks somewhat like the one I have already. I know some people hate curved keyboards and will stick to the standard keyboard for the rest of their lives, but I'm used to the curved one and I'll probably be faster with it than with a normal keyboard.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and I'm sure it'll help me making my decision tomorrow!
