How safe is the water that flows out of your tap? The answer very much depends on where you live.
It's now easier than ever for consumers to find out what's in their tap water. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) today released the results of a three-year investigation of municipal water supplies across the U.S.
The research and advocacy group looked at water quality tests performed by water utilities since 2004 and created an extensive database that contains info on the contaminants found in 48,000 communities in 45 states.
EWG also rated 100 big city (population over 250,000) water utilities. Below are the top and bottom results.
Cities with the best water:
1. Arlington, TX 2. Providence, RI 3. Fort Worth, TX 4. Charleston, SC 5. Boston, MA 6. Honolulu, HI 7. Austin, TX 8. Fairfax County, VA 9. St. Louis, MO 10. Minneapolis, MN
Cities with the worst water:
1. Pensacola, FL 2. Riverside, CA 3. Las Vegas, NV 4. Riverside County, CA 5. Reno, NV 6. Houston, TX 7. Omaha, NE 8. North Las Vegas, NV 9. San Diego, CA 10. Jacksonville, FL
Your city not on the list? Here is the full 100-city listing.
If you live in one of the few areas that weren't investigated, you can get an annual report of what's in your public drinking water. If your water comes from a well, then see the EPA's guidelines for those who use private wells.
The results of the investigation raise some concerns about municipal water supplies in the U.S. EWG says 316 different contaminants were found in the nation's tap water. The group also points out that more than half of those contaminants aren't regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Establishing more effective source water protection programs and developing enforceable government standards for contaminants would go a long way toward improving the nation's water supply, according to the EWG.
In the meantime, no one is suggesting that you go out and start drinking bottled water (although, of course, in emergency situations it can be necessary). Experts still agree that drinking tap is preferable to drinking bottled water. Bottled water is much more expensive than tap, it takes a huge toll on the planet, and it's not necessarily any safer than tap. "Bottled water is not regulated in the same way as tap water," says Olga Naidenko, a senior scientist at EWG. "With bottled water, consumers often do not know what they are getting, and 25 to 40 percent of bottled water on the market is simply tap poured into a bottle."
Knowing what's in your water is the key. Once you know which contaminants are present, you can find the best filter to get rid of them. EWG put together a thorough buying guide to help you find an affordable water filter that works for you. You can read the guidelines or search for products based on contaminants you want to get rid of. "
I didn't read the rest of the article, but literally laughed out loud when I saw the listing for worst cities.
I go to UC Riverside, and always thought the water was kind of crap here. Everyone was always like, "oh no, California utilities should all be the same and are fine!" I have no idea how the infrastructure works in that area.
But damn...second worst in this survey? Good god, LOL.

Arlington's number 1 because of all the clean burning propane
|
Orlando is 81... Good thing I filter the tap water.
|
Surprised Seattle isn't up there.

haha this actually reminded me of WCG 2007 when i went and met all the US players I hadn't met before. We went to eat somewhere and Nero asked for water but he got kind of serious with the waitress stressing how he needed that it to NOT be tap water and how tap water in orlando was the worst thing ever. Me and tasteless just start laughing at him for being such a dork knowing like the track record and all the reports of the orlando water "crisis". I remember tasteless screaming "ohhh nooo orlando water ahhh we're all gonna die"

something in your water? :D :D :D

Hooray for Charleston! Spent most of my life down there.
|
Why I love costco... tons of super cheap bottled water. (of course I am also a mineral water fan)
Otherwise I would have to drink the San Diego water, of course not sure it applies for Rancho Santa Fe water.
|
I was looking for my city then was like OH LOL BIG CITY T.T
|
Must really suck to live in a place without good tap water Having superb tab water where I live, I never really think about it, but we are really spoiled here. Pretty certain I have the best tap water of all of Teamliquid

san diego is in the 10 worst

Lol, only USA? I like to know how it is compared to here. We have decent water everywhere, some areas have harder water than others (more minerals) but it's clean and fresh everywhere.
|
PH you are a noob. I challenge you to a 1v1 on bgh.

Wow, really interesting because I live in Boston which is rated very highly, but my hometown is in Montgomery County, MD which is rated 82nd...
|
San Jose is 84.. that's.. pretty shitty.
|
Hmm... I have really good tap water. Since my city is taking it from the same source as the most popular mineral water on the market
|
I vouch for the LACK of quality in Houston water. Tastes like shit, everyone here buys bottled water or has a decent filter for the water. >.> Though water is dirt cheap around here.

I'd take you up on that. :p We have this awesome spring water from a spring only 100 or so houses in the neighbourhood have access to.
|
Lol US.
According to my biology teacher, when we talked about water awhile back he said that Finland had the best tap water in the world as a country, with Sweden soon behind it.
|
Anywhere in Thailand I'd say. I was using bottled water to brush my teeth.
Edit: And there is a small mining city in the north west of Australia called Port Hedland, there is so much calcium in the water, everyones kettle is completely white on the inside. I'm pretty sure everyone living there gets a kidney stone by the time they are 35.

Bottled water for that? lol. Tap water has less bacterial than bottled water. At least in Finlandd that is.

All countries I visit around Singapore, I don't use their tap water unless absolutely necessary. My friend used tap water to brush his teeth while in Indonesia, and he had severe diarrhea the next day lol

I always boil all tap water before drinking them.
I brush my teeth in the shower so hopefully the temperature kills the gems or whatever.

I can testify to #7 Austin's tap water being pretty good. I drink it all the time and putting it in the fridge makes any distaste go away!
I've always thought water in Colorado tasted REALLY good. These tests don't really say anything about taste though....
Texas, with the exception of Houston, has a bunch at the top of the list!

Ahaha, this made me chuckle a bit :p.
I'm not sure about the status of Norwegian tap water, but I have to admit that I've sometimes suspected it of giving me a loose stomach.
For the most part, it's really sweet though. Tastes way better than bottled water.
Don't forget to let the water run for a while before drinking it.
Water stuck in the pipes overnight aren't good for your health.
|
In Finland we have very good tap water 100% safe for drinking.
|
hm san antonio at 29 not too bad i guess, aquifer is pretty good.
also, wasn't there a report about u.s. drinking water awhile back and the EPA not being able to regulate because some of the pollutants corporations were putting into the water weren't on the clean water act or something?
frontline video (2hrs) http://video.pbs.org/video/1114515379/
oh nvm found an ARTICLE
excerpt "More than 20 percent of the nation’s water treatment systems have violated key provisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act over the last five years, according to a New York Times analysis of federal data. That law requires communities to deliver safe tap water to local residents. But since 2004, the water provided to more than 49 million people has contained illegal concentrations of chemicals like arsenic or radioactive substances like uranium, as well as dangerous bacteria often found in sewage."
|
I get best of both worlds. Live in Fort Worth and Arlington is only about 6 miles from me. I dont even know why people buy bottled water here. Other parts of texas the water is not even bearable to drink. I know the cities that run along the rio grande river have it bad, with all the human/drug trafficking that gets dumped into the river, and the cities using the rio grande river as a main supply of city water, even after being purified it still ends up tasting like a dirty rusted spoon.

im number 13. i've always heard good things about our water so.. no surprise i guess

here in munich we have perfect drinking water quality, if it had a bit more of some specific mineral (dont remember which one XD), it could even be filled in bottles and sold for money.

The water in Westchester is generally pretty good. Most people in the city get their drinking water from us anyway, so I'm assuming it's safe to drink.
I know on Long Island the water is garbage. They can't drink the water there because of the sea water (elevation is so low).

Major cities for the most part in the US are safe to drink their tap water a few parts in the northeast where the underground aqueduct for ny water goes has issues, as the system is old and is leaking water up to the residents along it's path to the ny poisoning their water all before it ever reaches the treatment plants for ny :D

Depends where in China, most large cities have drinkable water. I always drink the tap water when I am in China and I have never had any stomach trouble. I usually drink the tap water wherever I go , I even drank the water in Luxor, Egypt from my $2 a night hostel, which was probably pumped straight from the Nile. Sometimes I get a little cocky when thinking what my stomach can handle.
I wonder where Vancouver ranks, probably pretty highly for a city of its size, the water is also super soft so it tastes really good.

Tucson water has caused cancer in people from what some people are saying. Something having to do with improper storage of checmical wastes from Davis Monthan AFB or the airplane grave yard something like that.
(TAA).
The case involves the alleged contamination of the residents' tap water by discharges from the airport containing trichloethylene, which was used at the airport and at the nearby Hughes Aircraft facility.
In this latest chapter of the case, a Pima County Superior Court judge will decide whether or not Associated Aviation Underwriters should compensate the 1,600 or so residents under insurance policies issued for TAA.
