In the past couple months, I've purchased four new video games. Today, I realized that, aside from those games, I wasn't really sure what I wanted for Christmas. So I figured I'd create a thread on TL and steal ideas from you guys in order to augment my own list.
Please refrain from critiquing anyone's wish lists. This is a place for sharing, not bashing someone's taste in clothing, music, film, video games, etc.
Also, I think I speak for everyone when I say this: those of you who are going to post things like "world peace" and "nothing but my girlfriend's love" can go to hell. The last thing we need are a bunch of people subtly trying to make us feel like the materialistic bastards we are! Give in to consumerism!
My List
The Calvin and Hobbes Box Set. This is self-explanatory. Bill Watterson is amazing.
Two of the old James Bond novels. I don't know if anyone else is a fan of these. I've read three so far, and they're decent, light reading -- good for flights, train rides, and extended stays in the restroom. I'm chiefly interested in Casino Royale to compare it to the recent film adaptation. On Her Majesty's Secret Service is supposed to be on par with You Only Live Twice, by far the best of the three Bond novels I've read so far.
Sennheiser PXC 250 Active Noise Canceling Headphones. I'm sort of unsure about these. My job sends me on a reasonable number of trips per year, so if this "active noise canceling" technology actually lessens the blare of a jet engine, these headphones will be worth their weight in gold. If they're no better than in-ear headphones, obviously I'll be disappointed. CNET really likes this model, though. Does anyone have any experience with noise-canceling headphones?
Handmade damascus santoku from Master Asai, with a blue super steel core and red sandalwood handle. I won't actually be asking for this, but it's worth noting that I want it. If anyone else on TL knows what blue super steel is, we should be friends.
That's it for me, aside from the usual mix of dress shirts, socks, and boxers. What's on your holiday wish list? Remember, I will be stealing the best of your requests and adding them to my own list. 'Tis the season!

Sin City, I have read all the books but I want the copies for my self. However at about 20 a pop... thank God for Christmas.
Completely useless, but I quite enjoy PBF
I know it's a bad wish, but with university coming up how could I not.
I don't have one yet
I started to get into SF4, what else can I say?
That just about sums it up for now.

I only want one thing.
Sadly my wish is doomed to failure.
|
I got my Christmas present, a month early.
Yes, I wanted a blender for Christmas, and yes, it's probably the only thing I'll be getting.

I have the sennheiser pxc 300. + Show Spoiler + as you can see from the picture above they look almost identical.
Noise canceling on the plane works excellent. Really eliminates the roar of the engine even without music running. Only setback is the bulkiness of that noise canceling switch and the battery requirement.

New computer would be nice.
And a few months of no responsibilities.
|
My impractical wish list?
Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8. I really really really need a mid-range zoom lens.
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. Great image quality and great focal length for shooting sports and narrow angle shots.
Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II. Just to round things out, a super wide-angle (:
Canon 580EX II Speedlite: I would LOVE to have this one, but I'll probably have to settle for a 430.
I also need a couple more hard drives, and I would love a second monitor.
I can dream.
|
what a great thread DJEtter!
Well, last Christmas i got a broom. that's it. Christmas sure has changed since i was a kid (and was spoiled rotten).
So this year, i'm keeping it [still] simple:
Dry Measuring Cups. I just found out recently that dry measuring cups and liquid measuring cups are actually different measurements (or so i'm told).
Bed Sheets. I only have 1 pair and they're for a queen size bed and i only have a double.
I love these pens. I want a package of them.
i listened to the audio version, but i'd like the book version! (it's great by the way)
|
-Canon 50D or Nikon D300 or Canon EOS 5D, or really any "better than entry-level" DSLR camera.
-A 1TB external hard drive (any brand will do) so I can download more anime. Seriously, I've totally filled up my computer's 320GB harddrive and another 250GB external with (mostly) anime. I'm such a nerd :3
-A new cellphone, maybe a Blackberry Storm or something. My current cellphone is so lame.
i don't think i'll ever end up getting anything on this list though (at least not any time soon) T_T

My pianothingie:
For some reason, the lower notes tend to be louder than the higher notes, so it makes me question "is this the right note" because the music sounds different.
So I'd like a new one... one that changes volume depending on how hard you press the key.

There lives another! I'm so proud. Yes, it's not the fabled old school damascus, but the appearance mimics it -- hence the popular usage of damascus to describe the folded exterior. I didn't want to baffle anyone by getting into the specifics of the production method, haha.
A few custom makers hand-fold different types of steel together in order to arrive at a pattern welded steel with superior wear-resistance, and they make the entire blade out of that new steel, rather than cladding it as in the santoku above. Apparently the different steels in the pattern welded steel wear at different rates, which naturally leads to tiny micro-serrations that allow the blade to stay sharp -- not as sharp as without the serrations, but sharp -- longer. It's all very interesting. I'm no metallurgist, though. I just love the Japanese carbon steels. They get sharp so, so easily and stay that way for a long time when given the proper heat treatment.

I've had it about a week now, and it really is amazing. Was originally going to get the Blentec, but read a bunch of reviews online and found that everyone who had tried both said that the Vitamix was better. My last blender was a $40 blender that couldn't blend ice for shit, and would constantly freeze up. I broke it a few months back when I stupidly used a wooden spoon to try to mix it around. It shattered the spoon, crapped out the motor, and I was left blender-less.
I went to Costco the day after I got the blender, and picked up a shitload of fruit. Big bags of frozen strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and a bunch of fresh stuff. Everyone morning I've been doing a triple berry smoothie with the frozen berries, water, a couple spoonfuls of plain yogurt, and I shit you not, a handful of spinach. It tastes absolutely amazing, perfectly blended and drinkable, with zero taste of spinach.
I've experimented a bit with my own recipes and the berry smoothie is definitely my favorite so far, but I've made some pretty good things with frozen peaches, pears, orange juice, and a bit of ice. I've also tried a soup recipe in the 400ish page recipe book you get with it (Broccoli Cheddar). Took about 5 minutes of blending, and it was so hot that my sister burnt her tongue eating it. Was pretty good though, when adding extra cheese and a bit of hot sauce.
Of course it also has great potential for alcohol, and I know I'm eventually going to make some great frozen drinks, but I've been trying to eat healthier myself lately, and alcohol is not the way to go for it. But the fact that I can do it makes me happy. No more having to hand crush ice before tossing shit into the blender.
It's an amazing machine, and definitely worth the high price. I've used it everyday I've had it so far, and as long as I have shit to blend, I definitely will.
As for other posters:
The Gravity is a pretty good phone. Definitely worth the free price tag if you sign a contract, or the $50-60 bucks (I think?), it is otherwise.
And I just got a nice pair of shoes I ordered a month ago from Gilt today. They're pretty spiffy, maybe I'll upload a picture later.
And of course Progamer swag is always a given.
Oh, and for Christmas (and my birthday, the 26th of January), I'd love if someone chose me as their friend to go to the next OSL. :D

By far the best noise canceling headphones that i've come across are Bose. I forget the model that it is though. I was in a Best Buy just looking around and they had a display for some Bose headphones that simulated airplane noise and once you put on the headphones, even without music, all noise whatsoever was blocked out. Though they were quite expensive.
As for my list I probably will only get maybe 1 thing that I really want but thats ok everything I want is expensive.

bose active noise cancelling headphones are overpriced. I went for audio technica. they are pretty good and version 2 came out earlier this year.
1. Road Bike
Not this one. I'm probably gonna buy a custom made carbon one for relatively cheap (a friend of a friend owns a factory that makes carbon frames).
2. DSLR
I might buy my friend's old DSLR. It's the Pentax flagship model though so it's probably above my budget.
3. College Acceptance Letter
I'm probably not going to get any this year and I'm not applying to harvard. Any acceptance letter would be awesome enough for me (except I won't know until much later).
4. Edwards Guitar
I can't afford a Gibby and these sound just as nice (a little different though) and feel pretty similar. They are really good guitars. I'd say just as good as Gibsons. They aren't exactly the same but it's pretty close.
I also need a whole bunch of new clothes, shoes, and a wallet.
EDIT: I wouldn't mind a pull up bar too!

i hate how i never get what i really want as a present. my parents are too cheap to buy me a nice present. the best gift i've received so far was my ipod touch but i know that they got it for free at a convention. the best gift i've received that they actually payed for was this yugioh deck which cost like $14 when I was into card collecting and stuff.
my bikes gonna cost like $1000 so theres no way anybody is going to be nice enough to buy that for me. my parents don't see the point of owning more than one guitar so they aren't gonna buy me an edwards which costs around $500ish. they always say that our family should own a dslr during vacations when their crappy point and shoot fails at taking nice photos but they don't buy one when we get back. and nobody is going to help me get into a college. QQ... i'm not gonna get anything on my wishlist for christmas.

I only have two material things I'm wishing for.
New Super Mario Bros.: + Show Spoiler +
I've already played this for about two hours. The co-op is fun, but it's also frustrating. It is so easy to kill eachother by accident, due to there being absolutely no clipping between the player characters. Jumping off of someone else's head into a lava pit or being blocked during a running jump by a suddenly immobile teammate is fun, but not conducive to actually playing the game.
That said, it feels like a return to the 2D platforming games that are so beloved and playing single player is almost like playing Super Mario World for the first time again. I will probably end up buying it myself before Christmas rolls around.
The Beatles Rock Band: + Show Spoiler +
I love Rock Band. I love The Beatles. If it didn't cost so damn much I'd be playing it right now.

Intangible things I will have by this Christmas:
- my family who lives 40 minutes away from me - my warm furnished apartment - a steady job and income - a loving boyfriend - memories of my best friends who came to visit in Sept (I only get to see them once a year and this time they came to see me in Korea)
I can't ask for more.

I told my dad the only thing I want is a pullup bar in the basement near my other gym equipment. I don't care how ghetto it looks if he decides to build one on his own, I just want to be able to add pullups to my daily workout.
Other then that, I really don't have a need or want for anything specific. I was recently told an entire ~year of my college is being paid for thanks to my fathers GI bill. I think that counts for like...infinite amounts of christmas's.
Should be a good holiday in my house.
