So I want to know, what's the nerdiest thing you have done IRL in the past year?
I got to say mine is browsing and posting TL while I was in jail waiting to get a hold of someone to bond me out. Sadly once i made my calls and was w8ing for a call back, I thought it would be a perfect time to post in the High Thread... lol

My nerdiest thing in the last while was attempting to carve a zergling into a pumpkin for the contest... one of the kids walking by thought it was an ant... hence me not submitting it. fail
you were in jail you are no nerd for life. Wait is this supposed to be a brag? Or is, in your opinion (clearly non-nerd) visiting a website dedicated to games is nerdling behaviour?

Last night I kissed my gf wearing a giant red foam cowboy hat then preceded to ask her in a really low voice "how about some white chocolate?" and I did two euler projects.
Cleaning up my desktop, getting a new background for it, pimping out Vista with some colors, adding background pictures on MSN messenger etc. When I was done, I sat back, looked at how cool my computer was and just enjoyed myself for a while.
Until I realized how pathetically nerdy it is to feel cool about styling your desktop.
(Not counting all the daydreaming I've done of being a progamer who beats any korean in Starcraft with one hand behind my back)
I did an english project on gaming and how it influences teens. It was cool but i talked too much about starcraft, and no one understood wtf i was talking about. Do i regret it? hell no.

how is nanowrimo nerdy? its awesome, first, and doesnt necessarily have to have much to do with technology or other nerdy ventures.
but then, i am no expert on what is nerdy and what is not.

No, not bagging at all. I just was thinking about it earlier, and I realized my thought process once he cuffed my one hand to the bench and gave me my phone was something like this:
1: Call and get Eric or Carol to bail me out.
2: Take a picture of the handcuff on my wrist and the holding cell.
3: Well, shit this is boring, let's see what's going on on TL.
Trust me I don't consider visiting a game site nerdy, I just consider it when ur in jail, and could be doing so many better things with your phone b4 they took it away (which they never did, luckily i got bonded out.)
Got together with a couple friends on a friday night and played board games, one of them was streets of scottsdale and the other was tigris and euphrates. Nerd times.

Yea I was rly cool with the cop. I knew I had the warrant and was so I was so nice he ended up apologizing for arresting me. plus he said he would be be screwed if he ever got arrested and didn't have his cell, he knew nobody knows their contacts numbers by heart ne more. being nice to a cop arresting me pretty much ended up getting me my cell in jail to call for someone to bail me out. was sort of interesting to say the least. i still have the pics too lol!
Being nerd is awesome, but there is a line that a person should never cross, no matter how nerd he is. Playing WoW. That was the fucking biggest mistake of my life. It's not even a good game, in fact it sucks and it's poorly balanced. What a fucking waste of time T_T
I became very good at Pokemon Puzzle League (similar to Tetris Attack). Like really good. Like I beat super hard mode 4-5 times and have 10 minute matches against my friend.
I've watched 21 seasons of Star Trek this year (7 seasons each of TNG, DS9, and Voyager). And the worst thing is, I've seen them all before, and I know I'm going to see them again.
Volunteered to act as coordinator and coach to my school's CSL+ team. -_-
I have to actually think when arranging my weekend plans to work around the match times now. "Hey, let's chill!" "ok. WAIT...I need to stay online for a couple more hours 'cause I need to watch people play computer games."

Created an S.O.P on installing Starcraft and patching it. I also added pictures of some of the Korean progamers. My professor was quite amused He gave me a 10/10.
i attempted to build my rig.......which didn't work out so well because: 1)my mobos manual was dumb and the power switch pins were labeled wrong .. so this IT guy came in and just moved the power switch pins into the right place and the computer booted up and i was like /facepalm .. then 2) There was no post screen and the monitor wouldn't get a signal from the computer when i turned it on...... and since everything was already screwed in and in place i didn't want to take everything out and bench test it...... so the IT guy came in again, said that the RAM was supposed to be put in the 1 and 3 slots instead of the 2 and 4 (I SWITCHED THE RAM STICKS PRIOR TO CALLING THE IT GUY IN.. WTF????? U DONT EVEN NEED RAM TO GET A POST SCREEN OR A SIGNAL TO THE MONITOR) AND THEN I GOT A POST SCREEN WTF???????????/
so then other nerdy stuff would be learning sony vegas pro 9, i know some basics and stuff now!! yay for youtube tutorials.... i might share my video in making with TL haha
and then........ i re-downloaded a bunch of FMA:Brotherhood episodes because i got a 500GB portable/external harddrive.
Uhhh I guess discussing with my friends the different between crispy and crunchy in terms of material science (ductility, yield strength, tensile strength, etc.). The subject came to mind while we were eating lunch at Quiznos today... my memory is too horrible to think too far back.

Hell yeah.
Although I played the Tetris attack version. I could play it on speed level 99 and EXTREME BOWSER MODE and shit..
This girl was like "what do you do with Starcraft," and I was like "I help with the wiki at teamliquid.net" and she was like "that's the nerdiest thing I've heard in the last year."
I haven't done anything really nerdy in the past year, but when I was a freshman at my university I used to think about build orders before going to sleep.
I used to play no rush mm zero clutter games and would think of the best and optimal timings to both max out on gateways/units as well as cannons for defence. I would actually go through an entire game in my head and then do it all over again to try to improve upon certain things.
Last year near finals, I was out of shirts to wear, so I wore my CJ shirt and went to a local restaurant. A korean guy came in and commented on it, and we talked about professional starcraft for like 25 minutes, while the 4 ladyfriends of mine were waiting for me to finish eating.

This. Also, I keep telling everyone that school and work is taking up 'most' my time when really 80% of it is spent browsing TL, watching sc VODs, playing sc, and playing XBOX.
5 years ago: Played Dynasty Warriors III for 26 hours straight, completely forgetting about dinner, breakfast and lunch (in that order) only to be called by my parents asking why i didn't come home last night.
2 weeks ago: Spent 8 hours carving a team liquid pumpkin with my girlfriend.

If this was at level 60, that's totally worth it. If at 80, you should be ashamed.
As for the topic, the whole year is difficult. I'll just explain what I just got home from doing: Playing DnD, using magic cards for action points, and making casual conversation about competitive pokemon, Bubblegum Crisis, and random game speedruns. This was fine when we were 15, but that was about 10 years ago. Coincidentally, I'm still into starcraft after about the same amount of time. Ah well...

or
Texting to one of those "answer all questions" numbers around 6:am to ask where to find all the hookers in GTA4 (In my defence this was at a LAN and someones gf was obsessed with seeing the hookers).
Watching SC VOD's in front of other guys in my fraternity. They still give me shit. They just go aroudn saying "jibba jibba ahhhh!" which apparently is their imitation of Koreans speaking.
I wrote my masters thesis on In-Game Advertising. My profs really liked it and gave me a 8.5 for it and are putting it up for best thesis of the faculty this year.

Hard core nerdage.
The other day I had this friend of a friend tell me that he didn't want me to laugh at what he was going to say, because other Star Trek fans he had asked had laughed at him. Then he asked me if I knew about the Star Trek CCG (like Magic but with Star Trek) and I told him "I used to play that!" and told him about how I had to stop playing because it got too expensive with all of the expansion sets.
Edit:

Heh you should have seen what I was doing at the same time.
I was asking a friend how to go about writing a pseudorandom function that would work if called more than once every millisecond and would give different results if 2 different computers running the same program were to call it at the same time (to avoid packet collisions).
I was in the thesis labs at uni, logged into scientific linux, programming a packet radio using good ol' vim.
In the background the mud was running on a separate terminal with the wiki and tl.net on other windows in the background.
Even I was creeped out at at the sheer nerdage density emanating off me at the time :D

There was a girl i really liked. Everything was looking for me until we were at a bar, fairly drunk. For some nerdy reason, i started to explain her what is a zanpakuto, and what's the difference between shikai and bankai in the Bleach anime. Needless to say, i never fucked her and she barely says hi whenever she sees me.
Tbh I don't consider myself especially nerdy. I'm not really a hardcore gamer, my computer is ancient, I don't play MMOs and I can't program or shit like that. I'm a starcraft fan but I don't believe that to be any more nerdy than people in the UK who are baseball fans.

It was sometime in august, Friday night, 3 am. I was going home on my bicycle, through the center of Bucharest. I stopped at a light (because we don't have decent bicycle lanes so we ride on the street), and this black mercedes S-series stops next to me. I had my headphones in blasting some sort of hype-music, but I noticed the car so I looked inside. There were two blond girls, decently hot looking, and the one on the passenger side was staring at me. The moment we locked eyes she started 'rolling down' her window, so I took one of the headphones out of my ear and looked at her with a confused expression on my face. She asks: Hey, are you going to a club or something? To which I reply: No, I'm going home to play some video games. I put my headphone back in, light was green so I just ride away giggling.
Now, in my defense: 1. It was one of the dumbest questions I was ever asked in my life. I was on a bike. Who the hell goes to clubs on a bike? 2. The girls were definitely not my type. I don't like girls who are dressed like that and ride around in cars trying to pick up guys on the street. 3. I like my internal organs quite a lot so I would not risk waking up next morning without one of my kidneys, liver, etc. (yes, I know, sounds wrong, but these kinds of things are not THAT unusual in Romania). 4. Fun factor. I was actually going home to sleep, but I couldn't help saying video games.
3. I like my internal orgasm quite a lot so I would not risk waking up next morning without one of my livers. (yes, I know, sounds wrong, but these kinds of things are not THAT unusual in Romania).
I had to read this 1 1/2 times to understand and confirm what you meant.

I'll edit that, now that you've immortalized it. Also wtf we only have one liver.

Was stuck at a train station for 17 hours in a foreign country. I set up my laptop in burger king and using their free wireless started playing starcraft for almost 10 hours straight. T_T
When I got Final Fantasy XII, I slept 4 hours in a 60-hour period, playing the rest of the time. I went out at the end of this period, which was a big mistake. In the game there are zones you go through (for loading purposes) pretty frequently. When I was driving I was kind of in that rhythm of the loading zones (during which there is a black screen for 1-2 seconds) and I was basically falling asleep every 10 seconds or so. Not only that, the interface uses these colored lines when you approach an enemy, and I was seeing that shit. Also, in FF12 enemies pop up at about 30 meters away, and that's how I viewed many things. Beyond that, I was in the process of driving this girl home, and eventually I just had to explain what the fuck was going on. She's a cool girl so she took it well, but it was hard as shit going over all the stuff from the game and how it translated into me driving at that moment. I really had my head in the game.

Edit: I tried working on StarCraft 64, but unfortunately it desynchs sometimes. Also the level of optimization you can get on that game is INSANE, which translates into unholy levels of work just for Terran 1-1. Maybe i'll try it again next year.
Just to vent a little, it goes like this:
The cursor can reach any single pixel of the screen in 1 frame. You can select things in 1 frame and select actions in 1 frame. You can travel the any location of the map in 3 frames (1 to move the cursor to the minimap, 1 for clicking on the minimap and the final 1 to reach anyplace on the screen.)
So that means, you can make any action on a range of 2-4 frames, if the game runs at 60FPS you can have roughly 15 actions per second, or 900APM.

I got bored, and programmed a recursive version of Collatz Corollary because I was bored. It asked for you to enter any positive integer, and it shows you each step until it reaches 1.
Me and three of my flat mates sitting inside every night for a week playing the original pokemon on emulators. But we played it like real men, so 8x speed all the time, to make training faster. We had a race to see who could get Mewtwo and all the legendary birds first. I lost
While this was going on we rewatched the entire "original" series of pokemon..
listened to final fantasy 7 midis every day for 3 weeks because i had no other music/sound system. when i finally got some more music it consisted of internet memes i recorded onto my phone. this continues to this date
speedran a mobile vers of sonic 1 (lvs 1-5 or so) to the point that i figured out some jawdropping routes and definately hold the world records. infact i would pretend i was competing in world record with people cheering for me and with commentators etc. this continued for months luckily i have no games on my new phone..
Created a java program on my 6 month anniversary date to show to my fiancee when she got back home from work. The program only accepted valid months and days (and would insult you every time you entered an invalid response), and if you entered our six month or one year anniversary date, it displayed a happy message. Any other valid date entered, and it displayed how far until the next half year or full year anniversary date.
She says she loves my nerdiness... and it showed... later that night

Was great fun :p
I tried out a few ways, I think the fastest was relying on ratata to get hyper/super fang early and bulbasaur to beat the early bosses, you might need geodude, then I think slowpoke or staryu and snorlax until you get legendaries. And avoid all unnecessary fights. I remember crystal better, it was tricky, relied on geodude early, later heracross. beating the elite 4 with minimum leveling, I think sand attack charm stalling umbreon -> belly drum poliwrath or bp/swords dance hera.
haha has anyone else noticed that about half the posts in this thread are Pokemon related?
I guess Pokemon is the ultimate nerd hobby!

When Star Trek went into regular production, the department colors were altered: command and helm personnel wear the green/gold shirts, operations, engineering and security personnel wear red, and science and medical personnel wear blue, all with black collars and undershirts (TOS: "The Man Trap"). The frequent death of red-uniformed security officers led to the coining of the term redshirt.

I don't know who you are, I don't know what kind of person you are. But if you have the heart to save in a game when a bear is next to you in a stall (as I used to save my pokemon games after long car rides when we arrived at the place, right when we entered the parking lot it was my cue to save it because it took a while), you are one of the toughest nerds/geeks out there. --edit-- if you can't grasp the emotion im trying to express in this post its.. I honestly had a dream last night (after taking a couple melatonin pills). Nerdiest dream ever.
I was in my old three decker (2nd floor) and somehow boxer and nada were there (no lie, I will only write what I vividly remember). I somehow got mad at Nada, and boxer kept telling me to play him.. and I wasn't scared or anything, but I was just mad at him. We talked normally like we knew each other. Something happened before which I don't remember between me and Nada, a little immature thing that got me mad.. anyways, I decided to leave and go talk to my aunt on the first floor. THEN I realized.. what the fuck, boxer and nada upstairs!? (At this point, I couldn't go upstairs because it was too late for some reason, so I didn't even think about going back up). Then I kinda got mad at myself because that was the chance to get their autographs n a replay with them (when thinking about this, I thought about posting it on TL then rekrul laughing lol) even though they felt like they were my normal friends until AFTER. and that's all I remember. Woke up next to my girlfriend, and now it's her birthday but I'm still sad, I wanna go back to that dream lol :[
I have a good friend that lurks around in this site that goes to my school. I was just chilling at school with him and some other dudes, when I told him a story about DAy[9] closing the chat. After that I kept on screaming bear semen at the top of my lungs. Some girls that I knew turned around and were like ... O_O...

I also had a "nerdy" StarCraft dream, and this is 100% true. I dreamt that Bisu had just won an OSL, and he was holding up a giant golden trophy. I was somehow in Korea, and I was holding my tennis racquet. I ran up to Bisu on the stage, and hugged him, and was so happy to be able to talk to him, and he signed my tennis racquet. Then when I got off the stage, I saw Flash, and started talking to him. I think that's when my dream ended?

When I was not raiding I was reading the wow-forums or playing pvp with my pvp group (that group had only rank 10+ players and produced several High Warlords). I created a menu-based java program for fun that runs various methods. My 4th method is a modular arithmetic quiz:
* The quiz is repeated three times in a row for a total of 9 questions: * Each iteration of the quiz uses 4 randomly generated numbers, for a total of 12 random numbers. ....3 of them are between 21 and 40. ....the other is between 2 and 20 (the mod number)
* You are asked for the result of the first 3 randomly generated numbers in mod 2-20 (random) * Every correct answer increments a counter * Every incorrect answer states the correct answer
I did this just for fun and practice. I have my final in Programming for IT two weeks from now. The modular arithmetic one required me to practice using arrays more.

1. I have to clean up my HDD/Comp desktop first before cleaning my room/real desktop, because I can't do it the other way around.

3. When I wash my keyboard, i take out each individual key, scrub it down with an old toothbrush and washing powder then dry them all in a towel and then soft heat with a blow drier
4. Downloaded an 80 gig lecture series torrent on just about nearly every single topic there is, play a certain set of lectures every day on the bus to make use of my ~3 hour daily route to university.
5. Got a whole bunch of complete symphonies and concerto sets of an array of composers acomponied with a book borroweed from univeristy explaining music listening theory since I have no formal training in music

I set up my Matlab scripts to play the Terran Adjutants "Research Complete" wav file whenever a big programme is finished running. Then I changed some to the Aldaris one

I have ~300gigs of textbooks (yep.. text books, as in school) on my hdd lol.
my computer is the visual focal point of my room. i purposefully designed it that way.
i have a total of 12 speakers, 2 tvs, 3 computers, and other assorted nerd junk in my room.
I also organize my computer before my actual room... its very sad.

You sir fail at understanding the concept of nerdy. Unless you had sex with your girlfriend in a harry potter costume, then this is actually an accomplishment(menstrual and all).
made my ex-gf play starcraft, warcraft3, and finally WoW. The last one was a bad idea...(she used to type "/love /kiss /flirt /sexy" every 5-10 minutes, and once when we were raiding she typed /love again and I replied: not now baby, I`m tryin` to heal here!) .../facepalm
