You focused so much on Wavedash. I'd like to say that dash-dance is the most useful advanced technique in the game right after l-cancel. And it definitely is one of Marth's greatest strenghts, which you for some reason ignored.

Like I honestly don't know, because I'd assume there'd be many scrubs, but I'd also assume that they'd all play Brawl. I know that when I went to tournaments (Melee-only since that's all I frequent), my opponents all had years of tournament experience... and thus proper spacing and/or shield pressure. Sure with good timing you can shield grab a pillar, but you definitely can't shield grab aerials spaced properly by, say, Marth or Jiggs. Unless, of course, you can out-space them, in which case we're delving into skills besides shield grabbing XD. In the end, I suppose Brawl counts as smash, so you're probably right. ![]()

This is probably less true these days since the statement was originally in reference to the Melee era where most people didn't know anything about the competitive community, advanced techniques, etc. It's sort of like saying that knowing and executing a BO well can get you to D+ on iccup. Since then a lot of scrubs exposed to competitive Brawl and all probably know how to shield-grab now, so this statistic probably isn't any good now. Plus, shield-grabbing in Brawl is actually a pretty bad option for some characters... >_>

Characters are generally more balanced in 64 - there's no matchup that's absurdly unfavorable for one character like in Melee (Sheik vs. Bowser?). This is a pretty good synopsis. 64 is a game where one mistake will often end up in you dying because there's so many combos that are 0 to death. Long recovery on moves like spikes make getting killed at low percentages near the edge very easy. The block stun is also very long (the time it takes before you can input commands after blocking an attack), leading to characters like Ness that can break your shield if you block one of their moves. In particular, with instant l-canceling, Ness' double jump cancel is deadly in the right hands because you can throw out another aerial move before the other player's block stun is over --> shield break. It's a fun game, but can also be frustrating because you're either destroying the other guy with a 0 to death, or having the same thing happen to you. Here's the famous Isai ssb64 combo video, called "DON'T GET HIT" for a reason ![]() + Show Spoiler +

![]() Yeah, in the four sentences I use to talk about why Marth is good, I mention his good wavedash and his good dash-dance. There's only so much you can say about why these are good in one paragraph, though. Remember, this guide is targeted largely at people who are used to high-level gaming in some other domain and want to know what Smash is about. I'm sure we both know less about Smash than even some people in this thread who are correcting us, so this guide is not meant to be overly informative to those people. ![]()

Well, this guide is super basic :/ I doubt anyone but the very noobs would benefit from this. Most people who read guides like this just start randomly wavedashing and trying to look cool and forget to play the game.

I don't mean xbox online ones, I mean well known tourney champs, second places and the like. Would any of them happen to be playing for "Blight Gaming"?

Sigh, whatevers. lol if they really cared they'd just go to smashboards. cuz ssbm can totally be explained in detail in one guide, right? ckit's fox guide was like ten times longer than this one and it covered one character... and that was with the limited knowledge they had years ago. edit: i wonder how many of the replies here are by people that actually don't play ssbm edit again: It's called that because someone asked Isai for advice in smash, and he said "Just don't get hit". i prefer azen's "fsmash and dont jump into the rape"
