Rescuing and passing your characters among themselves, "trading" weapons in order to switch another character's active weapon after that character's turn is over (before the enemy phase), extra turn shenanigans with dancer-type characters, unique staff effects, etc. are more strategically interesting to me than setting up characters pre-battle to be so good it doesn't matter really what you do in the battle. I think Langrisser 2 and 4 are better than the FE series though. But yeah, there's a lot of stuff like Shining Force, Front Mission, etc., and then the whole slew of rip-offs like ____ Tactics (e.g. Onimusha Tactics) that stink up the genre. One more off-topic and we ought to do this by PM. ![]() + Show Spoiler + I feel like a few good missions (which I admit to there being) doesn't redeem a game thats otherwise generally bland as far as things go. At any rate "supposed to play fast" doesn't mean a whole lot as the game in no way incentivizes you to play fast. You don't get anything out of it, other than the annoyance of having to restart missions if something goes wrong. Customization is only half the problem IMO with the character scheme, the other part being randomization. Depending on your luck, your characters can range between incredibly gimped to insanely powerful, and there aren't enough levels in the game for statistical fluctuations to cancel out (particularly in stats that have low growth to begin with). I feel like a Tactical scenarios are harder to make interesting when you have to deal with such wide variability in player strength. In regards to the "cool" system features, there's not really much use for all of them, because making full use of them is rarely necessary to win. Gimmicky features mean nothing if you never have to use them to win. I might have to give Langrisser a try. If its as good as you say it is, I'm excited to get my hands on the first good TRPG in a while (got to try Valkyria Chronicles a bit, but don't have a PS3, so I couldn't spend lots of time with it). In general though, I prefer my tactics RPGs on the PC (X-Com, Silent Storm, and Jagged Alliance have consumed more hours of my life than any console/portable TRPG). | ||
