Yeah, about FE a lot of people do play them really slowly, advancing only tank characters to take hits, etc. But at least in some of the games, you find yourself in positions being attacked from multiple sides or trying to rescue some new character(s) where you're obligated to play more excitingly. Anyhow, I thought since the games generally keep track of how many turns you take, you're "supposed" to play fast.

There's not much in the way of tailoring characters other than 1-2 class changes in general and the exception of FE4, true. Somewhat by coincidence but partly by the game design, FE4 is the one with the most customization and the most super-broken characters (I mean, those two points are somewhat related). Character customization is good, but many times like in FFT's case, it actually hurts the game IMHO because how it breaks the balance.

The strengths of FE to me are the importance of positioning and using map features, and the miscellaneous "cool" system features. Rescuing and passing your characters among themselves, "trading" weapons in order to switch another character's active weapon after that character's turn is over (before the enemy phase), extra turn shenanigans with dancer-type characters, unique staff effects, etc. are more strategically interesting to me than setting up characters pre-battle to be so good it doesn't matter really what you do in the battle.

I think Langrisser 2 and 4 are better than the FE series though. But yeah, there's a lot of stuff like Shining Force, Front Mission, etc., and then the whole slew of rip-offs like ____ Tactics (e.g. Onimusha Tactics) that stink up the genre.
