Kids are useless, numerous and easilly replacable, so it's far better that it's them who start tantruming than actually competent members of your fort. Also, since they're kids, it takes 12 years from birth before they're able to put their legendary-level skill to use anyhow, which means it'll be a wasted skillup anyhow. Just hope their parents aren't very attatched to the kid. Culling a tantrum cycle's always a ... pleasurable experience.

What does he even want? from the wiki, Once all materials have been gathered, viewing the workshop with q will display a special message depending on the type of mood: Fey - "<dwarf> works furiously!" Secretive - "<dwarf> works secretly..." Possessed - "<dwarf> keeps muttering <artifact>..." Macabre - "<dwarf> works, darkly brooding..." Fell - "<dwarf> works with menacing fury!" in your case it is possessed, so i guess it will end nicely

I downloaded the client, followed some guides to install some graphics, watched a few tutorial videos on youtube, started a world... but the whole thing is so intimidating, in depth, and unfriendly. I don't even know where to begin. I have no idea what im doing. Can anyone help me before I give up completely? Maybe just some general advice or tips for a beginner? I want to like this game, I really do, but I just cant seem to get into it.

Then you keep going until you fuck something up and all your dwarfs die in a hopefully hilarious fashion. Rince and repeat.

However, I run it on linux (not ubuntu) and can't figure out how to use Dwarf Therapist, or any of its clones. Above 50 dwarves, without any utility, it becomes way to tedious/annoying to manage all the dwarves labors... Suprizingly, this is what is stopping me from playing this game all the time (more than it's difficulty). Anyone knows a good DT clone that would work on linux mint? Is it just better to run it on wine? Also, I can't find any iron. And yes, I have sedimentary layers, and I embarked on a location with "shallow metalS". Traders hardly have a few pieces of copper...

Traders hardly have a few pieces of copper... http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Iron Iron can be found in the three stones listed there. Take the ore to a smelter which will then make it into iron bars. Note because it may state 'shallow metals' - you may not even have those ores when embarking (luck of the draw). To check what type of metal you'll be able to use forging items - use 'k' on the raw ore and it should state 'ore or iron' 'ore of silver' etc. Normally when you find what ore you're fortress will be able to forge, find what weapon type the ore is best used for (some metals are stronger for slashing weapons while other are better for blunt)

I am finding all sorts of stuff in my sedimentary layers, with exotic names, but none of the 3 (?) ores that can make iron. Worse, I can't even find any ore that would make a weapon (no silver ore, no copper ore...). I guess it's not too bad, since I can trade/melt the stuff I find on the goblins I kill. I actually like the idea that I have to rely on these other sources of weapons. I read somewhere this is the result of the "latest" patch, and I approve! Does everybody use DF Hack to "scan" an embark area before going in? As I said, using linux, I don't use any of the utilities available to windows users, and it sometimes makes things a little harder
