Is anyone else in this forum into competitve laser tag? Where do you play if you are into it?

I play at the Ultrazone in San Diego. I play in leagues there regularly and have played in a few tournaments as well. I travel occasionally to play in arenas not in my hometown.

I know there are Ultrazones all up the west coast and they are beginning to spread through the rest of the country. There are a couple in Europe and I hear they\'ve got a decent network of them in Australia (Darkzone there I believe?)

But just curious if anyone else here is a serious laser tag player.

lol probably true. I remember playing lazer tag at Exhilarama in houston tx when I was a kid. It certainly is much easier and more tame than paintball. I guess the only redeeming value it has is the cool blacklight fog machine effect. I mean, lazers are rad lookin streakin through the air in the dark.
I went to the chippy last night and only orderd chips because I knew I could get fish from her bushy plate.

I've played in numerous tournaments at Laser Quest - 5-Man's, NAC (North American Challenge), etc. and it's actually really fun. Laser Quest is the best place for competitive Laser Tag and I promise you its fun.

That's not true of our area, most of us here like paintball and the staff and their friends play airsoft in the arena after hours. I like laser tag better because of the closer quarters and also because the formats you can program into the computer are very flexible as to what sort of things and formats you can have. the computer also keeps track of a lot of statistics in the game which otherwise would be difficult to do in paintball.

Well, with the older packs, prior to infusion, dodging other people's shots was a possibility that could be practiced. It can still be done now, but it's much more difficult, even for the pros. Precision and general awareness are important. The way you use the arena and its obstacles/walls. Developing strategies to attack other teams and to defend certain locations. And holding the gun correctly, most new players hold it shotgun style, which is horrible for mobility (and in leages considered cheating as it block your chest target). Skills also vary from format to format.

edit: the rate of fire is often modified to a slower rate at higher levels of play (1 shot/second) so that players don't just spam the trigger.

Most of the people who play are over 12. There are World Championships each year. The first World Champs was won by one of our teams here in San Diego. In august a bunch of us will be travelling to Australia to play in a series of events there over the course of a week or so.

well, the way to hold it varies slightly from site to site. This is how we do it in San Diego:

You hold the gun right around your croths area (or above your head, personal preferences) to keep your chest target open. The is a sensor on the barrel of the gun, which needs to be covered. Put your left thumb over the sensor and wrap your fingers around the other side. You use your right thumb to fire the trigger. With your thumbs doing all the work you can easily flip the gun with your fingers to face either direction without moving any of the rest of your body.

My team is playing in a tournament tomorrow night, if I remember I'll take a picture of how we hold it and post it here. Much easier than explaining it.

Especially for the employees and their friends. But aside from that it isn't all that cheap, $6 for a fifteen minute game here. Some of the regulars here easily could blow $100 a week on laser tag.

you know what i would like to try? Is the M.I.L.E.S(Multiple Integrated Lazer Engagement System) the militray uses. Its basicly a big ass game of lazer tag but they have full body sensors, and they even put them on tanks and stuff.

im thinking lazer jizz, with the gun repeatedly banging you in the crotch, or turret lazers, with you looking like some sort of nerdy totem pole.

Wow I didnt know there's actually a competation for laser tag. Yeah it's fun but I prefer a game of speedball (paintball) anyday. More realistic and its cheaper... if you already own a marker.

In San Diego, and all the tournaments that I've gone to, it has been considered cheating for high level laser tag. I am sure there are places it is not considered unfair or cheating.

We have found a way, at least those of us with long enough arms, to be able to completely cover every sensor from the front of our vest (front, both shoulders and the gun itself) and still be able to fire effectively. While doing this, we cannot be tagged except from behind, which can be fixed by standing against a corner or wall.

The picture is pretty dark, but I think you can see good enough for my explanation.

The gun is held upside down, my right thumb on the trigger, my left thumb on the sensor (you have to have two hands on the gun to fire). This grip allows for maximum flexibility in my opinion and to change the direction you are aiming you just cross your arms. Or do the little flip trick we learned, but without a video I think I'd fail to explain that too. Also it lets your keep your body hidden or protected while your arms can do al the work of positiongin and aiming the laser.

It was really awkward learning to shoot this way at first, but after a couple months practice, I would never consider holding it any other way.

Yes, that is always why I thought it to be considered cheating if you use your arms to cover your chest. If it is allowed, then how much covering is too far before you get to completely covering? Therefore it is not allowed at all.

Hi, I saw this post on the internet googling for Laser Tag players in houston.

I manage Area 21 in Houston Texas, and I'm obvioulsy a huge fan OF Laser Tag, I'm looking to start a competitive group within our facility. A lot of the things people are failing to mention about laser tag (given the post is 5 years old) Theres now things such as Enviromental targets. Bases, Turrets, Ressurections, Power ups liek Rapid Fire, Invincibility, Nukes, Pay backs, - and differnt game modes like Shadow (stealth mode) Death Match (similar to Unreal tournament, gaining power ups through base respawns.)

The difference between paintball and and laser tag, is variety and vifersity. Anything you come up with for Laser Tag can be done wihtin teh system, while paintball needs some kind of ref to call the shots and control the rules. Laser Tag has the rules int eh system. I.E. Capture the flag in laser tag is infact intergrated into hwo the game plays, versus using an outsourcing object to be determiend as whats a flag etc.

Also, I'm disabled with a few problems related to the kidney and the spine. I cant play Paintball, but I can SURELY kick back door in some laser tag.So if you cant medically take the hit of paintball, laser tag is the way to go. If you dont feel liek being sore and getting bruises, laser tag. If you want ACTUAL game types, envriomental effects, NPC targets, and a game WORLD, play laser tag.

Oh - and The phaser is infact a Target in today Laser Tag - you cant hide it. The skill comes down to hunting an opponent. Being as quiet as possible, knowing where your lights are flashing and when your about to become respawned to pop out and tag the next opponent. Using sound to determine where somone is going, and sneaking behind them to get the hit, burrowing yourself into a nearby barrier, leaving the tagged clueless on where they got hit from. The black light, the DMX Pandora music, the fog, and AIR CONDITIONING, make laser tag an experience that you can repeat over and over.

Yeah this blatantly seems like cheating too. The rules say you can't cover any sensors. But you are.. Unfortunately it is pretty difficult to ref everyone playing a lasertag game at once, hence why people like you get away with it
