GENERAL UPDATE

Dolphin keeps upgrading at a pretty fast rate so this guide keeps on getting outdated. I suggest checking this page for when you want to get set up for netplay from now on: https://www.smashladder.com/help/netplay-guides

Also check out the Melee community build its a mod that gives new functions and stages. Europeans use the PAL patch instead

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

+ Show Spoiler +

UPDATE #3
Dolphin 7161 is out
https://www.smashladder.com/guides/view/25wi/dolphin-4-0-7161-update

UPDATE #2
Latest dolphin version is 6554:
https://nl.dolphin-emu.org/download/dev/f5b0468179f1c3c15cfb5957218ee9f27cb47d77/?cr=nl

This one also natively supports the nintendo controller adapter, which is practically lagless

In other news, there is a new ISO made by a bunch of talented modders/hackers which is called the 'Community Build', it has awesome features and is directed at online play.

Check out this thread on sb: http://smashboards.com/threads/melee-netplay-community-build-0-2-0-released.372251/
EUROPEANS who have the regular NTSC netplay iso, please use this patch instead of the ones listed:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/nv3uu2qih3pcil1/MNCB v0.2.0 - NTSC TO PAL.rar
If you live in europe it's best to play PAL, since that's what we play at tourneys

UPDATE

If you're looking for information concerning the new Dolphin-5886 (this guide was written for 652) go here:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CIkBAGcf_-kBUa4urn4KUj2U4UA6y_2a7stXJz85yiE/edit

If you're looking for information for using the Wii U adapter on Dolphin go here:
https://nl.dolphin-emu.org/docs/guides/how-use-official-gc-controller-adapter-wii-u/?cr=nl

Hello liquid smashers, I figured I'd share this important piece of information. As a casual player Dolphin is giving me the chance to play people I've never met before. It even has decent latency, given you and your opponent don't live a continent away and you both have decent internet.

There are players from all over the world, it's quite easy to connect to other players nearby! If you ever played the game it's super easy to start playing again!

In my country, there's no scene at all. Luckily I can play with people from all over Europe now and improve. Getting my ass handed to me all the time. It's frustrating but awesome at the same time. But in return, you start kicking other people's asses too. Or you have super tight clutch games where you're both over 100% at the last stock and OMG EVERY MOVE COUNTS. The only other game that has nailbiting moments like this is brood war (for me, at least).

ALL CREDIT GOES TO SMASHBOARDS.com - This thread contains all the information you'll see here. I've merely reduced it to the bare minimum that's needed to get started.

Anyway, playing melee online is surprisingly simple. There are a few requirements:

A decent pc, although the newest dolphin runs pretty well on lower end machines, just stay away from Fountain of Dreams unless you've got the Community Build (see above)

A gamecube controller (dont try to save money, buy an official one or you will regret)

An adapter for your controllers, this can be an official Nintendo one or this one: http://www.amazon.com/Mayflash-GameCube-Controller-Adapter-Port/dp/B00RSXRLUE

An .iso file Super Smash Bros. Melee Revision 2 (1.02) ISO
if you type that into google with "torrent" behind it I'm sure you'll figure out the rest

Dolphin DC-Netplay 4.0-6554

Once you have all those things, follow these steps:

Extract Dolphin to a folder that you want to use. From there, you will run the emulator. You will need to configure a few things before playing:

1. Place the Super Smash Bros. Melee 1.02 ISO in a directory of your choice. Make sure it is either an iso or gcm file, extracted from any kind of archive. Within dolphin, you must set the default iso directory (under the File Menu,) to the folder where that ISO is being stored.

2. Once Melee shows up in the ISO list, right click it and go to properties. Under the AR-codes section, there should be a bunch of cheats. The only cheat used in general play is "Global Melee Netplay Settings." Enable that. Close this window.

3. In Options > Configure, we need to change a few settings. First, make sure Dualcore, Idleskipping and Enable Cheats are all checked. If your router cannot handle UDP automatic port forwarding, you can set the netplay listen port to a manually port. You must follow the port forwarding guide below if you want to do this.

4. In Options > Configure, move to the GameCube tab. Make sure you have at least one controller plugged in.

5. In Options > GC Pad settings, you can setup your controller. It should be self-explanatory for anyone who's setup an emulator. Use this image as a reference

6. ALL FIREWALLS MUST BE DISABLED OR ALLOWING DOLPHIN. This allows us to connect/host netplay sessions without port forwarding.

7. You must right click the game in your gamelist and select the host netplay option. The code your given lets you host without giving out your IP/Port.

Finding Matches and playing online

2 options: ladder matchmaker & IRC channel

+ Show Spoiler [IRC] +

Dolphin currently uses a peer to peer system. That means the best way to find matches is to find a group of people who want to play online. Right now, the best place to do that is within our IRC chat. We support Project M and Melee currently, and will be adding support for other games as we gain a big enough community for them. We're currently hoping to

To host a Netplay Game in Dolphin, you simply right click the game you want to host and select the "Host Netplay Session" option. There you will see an ID code on the upper right. You can copy that and give it to anyone else on the same build. You can still get the port by switching from ID to IP. The IP will be your localhost IP, so you have to google for your external IP for others to connect.

Connecting to Netplay is simple. You just go into the Tools tab and hit connect to netplay session and input the 8 character ID or the IP: Port combination as such.

Host then can set buffer before or during the netplay session. The way to get optimum buffer is to stay in the menus and lower buffer until the framerate starts to drop. Lower buffer means less latency, you want the lowest buffer possible without affecting the framerate!

All a client can do is join another netplay session. You must first get the IP and port from the person hosting, and then enter it. Once joined, you just need to wait for the host to start the game.

Recording Input is broken as of 4.0-515, and will be fixed as soon as possible. We'll keep you updated. For games that use memory cards, when you configure pads in Dolphin on 646, you can also configure the memory cards! This is useful when playing other games than Melee and one person has a partially completed save file.

Graphics Settings

General Tab lets you change some general settings. Auto Adjust Window Size lets the window size get locked to Internal Resolution. The rest of the settings are for personal preference and self explanatory.
Under Enhancements, depending on the strength of your graphics card, turning up Internal Resolution can greatly increase your picture quality without sacrificing framerate. Anti-aliasing and anisotropic field will cause problems in Melee, so don't use them. Under Hacks, Cache Display lists can be used for a small speedup, but can break other games. Everything else is fine as default.
All backends sync with one another over netplay, so don't be afraid to try them and figure out which one suits you.

nVidia Users
OpenGL plugin will be fastest, especially with the Vertex Streaming Hack enabled. It will not cause any issues in Melee. OpenGL does suffer from some very intermittent background flicker in Melee; if you have extra processor speed, you can use D3D11 to play with no graphical errors. D3D9 can also be used to fix the background flicker, but will introduce other errors.

AMD/ATI Users
D3D9 and D3D11 will perform better than OpenGL, but D3D9 has significant problems because of how old it is. Despite this, it will also be slightly faster than D3D11. Use D3D9 if you must, but D3D11 will provide more accurate graphics.

Jump in your car and come to Lille on April 5th if you want real competition

That being said, Online is pretty cool, and it will definitely get widespread over time with computers being able to run the game, and connections always improving.

It's got a bright future, for sure.

I hear a lot about how ping has a huge impact when playing online. From the UK, what countries can I play with to have any 'reasonable' ping? For example, is it possible to play a decent game with people from the US East Coast, or am I restricted to EU countries, or worse still just the UK? For what it's worth, in Dota I get ~120-150 ping to East Coast, and ~70 ping to EU.

You can get away with ping in rts/moba games because precision isn't super important past a certain point. It's so important in melee, that people won't use lcds because there will be a frames lag or so, which is equal to 16.66... ms. Realisticly, playing on a computer (lcd, so a frames lag at least), with a gamecube adapter (almost certainly input lag), over the internet is super limiting as to where you can play. Overseas is a no go, and I'd even argue that 40ms of lag is getting too high to make it worthwhile.

Imo you want to play as close to someone as possible.

it's basically for if you live in a crappy suburb with no real scene and you can't afford the time/money/whatever to go into the city. you can try and perhaps even get somewhat decent with laggy play but if you attend a tournament ever the 0-lag CRT will throw you off. you'll have solid johns tho

Just wondering where in the uk are you? Are you part of the smashUK group?

Also pretty much for any REAL play you're not gonna wanna play anyone outside of the uk or france.

Be sure to pm me with your details and maybe i'll be hosting smashfests near yours. Also we can play online (im london)

Just to clarify, I'm asking as a person who has never played Smash before and is just curious as to how I can get started. I'm not quite looking to get involved in tournaments or anything like that anytime soon. Sounds like playing online isn't that good of an option though, so at this point I'm feeling a little hesitant to get involved.

Imo the ping is very doable if you're just getting into it. Frame perfect play is important for doing advanced techniques, but at your level it shouldn't be too noticeable. And if you ever decide to become competitive, you'll take a few days to adapt to the 'real' speed. East Coast has about 120 ms for me, so forget that cause it's too much (like playing on extra high lat) But you should be able to connect to france, belgium, holland, germany, maybe even sweden... without too much trouble.

Glad to see this is generating some interest!

with response to the above on lag

16ms = ~ 1 frame or so

playing on an LCD only produces lag because of the conversion of native resolution 480p to a 1080p or other screen
Of course, using an emulator doesn't suffer any of these problems
All LCD's have some native response time (CRT's have 700 nanoseconds), though a modern screen wont have much more than 1-2ms (mine is 2ms, and pretty much unnoticable). Anything <5ms is basically completely unnoticable and acceptable for competitive gaming.

The rest of your lag comes from the adapter you use. Mayflash and raphnet adapters are known for being very fast, and all within <1ms

Basically, if you get more than a few ms of lag playing locally on dolphin, it' sbecause of your hardware (GPU issues with some AMD), vysync (aero does this for example) and other issues. Otherwise it's as good as a cube+CRT

---

You will probably get <1-2 frames (hopefully 10-30ms) of lag playing someone else in the uk. This is fine for friendlies, though not enough for tournaments. Feel free to hit me up for some games

Also smashfests arn't tournaments, they are just casual gatherings in peoples homes to play for fun, so definitely get involved they are tons of fun

Guys i made a mistake above

Monitors do have some native input lag, and you can check it on here

http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/#participants-list

Response time is NOT the same as input lag (though it is related)

Still as long as you have <1 frame input lag you should be OK. It might get noticable if you're a very high level fox though

Miscellaneous troubleshooting notes:

Some routers don't play nice with UPnP, so if people can't connect to your game, that's probably why. There are a few ways to remedy this.

In the netplay screen (assuming you're hosting), click the dropdown box below "Players" and change it to localhost. It'll show you the port number Dolphin picked. Forward that port manually in your router settings.

Like so:

This port changes every time you restart Dolphin. If you just want to play with friends and don't want to muck around with ports every time, you can consider using Dolphin 4.0-430. This version of Dolphin doesn't use the ID/UPnP stuff, instead using an older netplay interface where you need to specify IP and port to host and connect.

Edit:
One more thing. You can actually have people obs your match for maximum humiliation.

First, everyone must connect to the same room (obviously). Next, the host needs to click on "Configure pads" on the host screen, which should bring up the following screen:

Remove EVERYONE except for the two people who are playing, then start the game. The extra observers will not have control in the game, and will not contribute to latency.

An FFA is theoretically possible, but you might end up with massive lag.

Haven't yet found a retailer that will ship the adapters to Norway. Even Amazon.co.uk is under-performing here. I'd probably have to resort to eBay to get one.

Yep, it's the same across all Amazon retailers; Mayflash adapters cannot be shipped here, nor can the white Nintendo controllers. I'm gonna check on a few more retailers before I give up.

Update & Edit:
Seems like Play Asia has them. Lot of shipping options and overall not that expensive. If Amazon is failing you and you live in Europe, it might be worth checking out.

Old update:

Exhausted all things Amazon and online retailers in general. I would definitely need to use eBay for this, which means shipping from Hong Kong where delivery might easily exceed 20 days and be quite expensive. No thanks; not for something I'm not even sure I'll use that frequently.

My current computer specs are:
2.4 ghz Core2Duo (not overclockable)
1 gb ram
old graphics card (256 mb, directx 9/opengl 2.0 support)

The graphics card didn't support DirectX 10 or OpenGl 3.0, so I couldn't run the latest version of dolphin. Instead I tried an older version and got ~40 fps on single player ssbm.

My question is, would I be able to run netplay ssbm if I upgraded ram and graphics card? (in other words, is my CPU good enough?) I am ok with lower graphic settings if it is necessary, but I want the game to run smoothly.

Thanks.

Yeah there's no way you're going to be able to have smooth gameplay without a complete upgrade of your computer.

How about if I had 3.0 ghz? After much research it seems like it IS overclockable. I will add another 2 gigs of Ram and get some decent gpu.

Is it pretty easy to find matches if you live in the states? I'm in Texas and considering setting this up but a little on the fence. Not that the Gamecube controller adapter is expensive or anything but I don't want to spend money on something I won't use.

I'm pretty sure you can use any controller you want, KDJ was using an Xbox controller.

The triggers on the white one are a bit hard to press have to really make an effort or I miss a lot of L cancels cause it doesn't get pressed down enough.

i have a PC with the following specs: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1pPHv

is my dated videocard causing me to have some slight fps slowdowns at 1920x1080 resolution fullscreen? I've been toying around with speedhacks and various settings to try and maintain constant 60 fps but i do have some issues

Anyways, ended up with the same issue. The controller (for me only the controller) wasn't shipable so I ended up ordering from amazon.de (GER) and that did work because duh, I'm from Germany.

Can someone tell me what the treshhold and Radius things do in the GC-pad settings? You linked this pic in the OP (http://i.imgur.com/4jxFev4.png) and it has everything on either 100% or 0% (noone cares about D-pad) and I got a link somewhere else where those radius' where on 70% and the treshhold for L and R as well I think. What's up with that?

Radius = range of input control. Should def be 100 unless your controller really sucks

Dead zone = basically looseness of your analog stick. worn controllers usually have some wiggle room in the neutral where you can move the stick but nothing happens. the looser it is the higher the dead zone (since you don't want to have it accidentally walk the other way due to being loose). Mine is at 8 or so

Threshold = I assume this is how hard you press on the shoulder buttons before they register an analog input. Mine is not at 0 for this

edit: also, anyone on the west coast want to play? i just bought an adapter for no real reason, would be fun

Threshold is how hard you press on the shoulder buttons before it registers a digital input. It simulates the button click when you fully depress a GC controller's trigger. It's useful for full analog triggers like the xbox controller, and is arguably useless for actual GC controllers.

Man i have to say, even playing with a friend on the West Coast (im on East), with 90ms, it was still SO MUCH FUNNN! It would lagg pretty bad sometimes, but for the most part was actually surprisingly smooth. Does anyone know what the buffer should be? Someone i played VS said to add +1 to the buffer for every 17ms, is this accurate? Also, if it was lagging really bad, would the buffer help that at all? I noticed it lagged i little less when raising the buffer for the 90ms we were getting, but it could have just been my friends PC being too slow or something. Anyways, so fucking good, thanks for bringing this to my attention! GG GL

Thanks, no idea if it was because of that weird radius setting but I have a lot less "wtf why didn't I dash instead of walking" moments.

Could I use an xbox controller instead of the gc + adapter?

Edit: Yes you can!!! Just did it and it works well.
Only problem I am having now is sensitivity issues, where I can barely do an up attack without jumping and pressing down B will sometimes do an over be attack. Not to mention the credit shooting was impossible.

Imo you want to play as close to someone as possible.

lcds seriously aren't just a frame of lag. It's enormous amount of lag. It's completely unplayable with an lcd, and I have no problems playing street fighter or king of fighters online.

BTW I don't think other types of controllers would really work, GC's triggers and the control stick are somewhat special.

Xbox controllers work fine. An analog stick is an analog stick, and threshold means the triggers are emulated just fine.

I can also vouch for the 360 controller working, its very good IMO, although ive never played with a GC controller, so i have no reference point, but it seems to be fine. I also mapped the buttons differently, since ive been conditioned to use A on the 360 controller for jumping since every game in the passed 10 years has been A to jump, i couldn't get used to hitting Y for jumping, was really messing with my head. So i have A for jump, X for attack, and B for smashes? i think its called. Anyways, good times guys, good times!

FYI there is a guy called ridler who only plays with the 360 controller and hes pretty good haha

Though seriously, if you wanna take up smash, play with a GC controller

I'd also lke to testify that whilst i've tested with several pros ranging from 20-50ms, and they all agree it's different and we can all feel the lag instantly, that by no means detracts from the fact you're still playing melee online and it's totally 100% playable and enjoyable and good for both practise and serious play. It's only not good enough for tournament setting pretty much

So my controls are set up the right way, they work just fine for set up, no cross ups or anything, but when I get in game all the controls are borked. I'm permashielding, most of my keys are for grabs, except when I'm in the air where everything works correctly. I need a new ISO right?

And I fixed it. No idea how, but I fixed it.

Just ordered a mayflash adapter, I am excited for it to arrive. I hope I don't have too hard of a time playing all the way from Japan though. Does anyone know if I can use a Gamecube disc of Melee instead of having to download an ISO?

You definitely need the ISO, v1.02

That being said, I'm not too sure how good your ping will be vs other players. I'm assuming Australians are your best bet, because I don't know of any Japanese players on netplay. Have you tried reaching out to other japanese melee players? The closer they are the better your playing experience will be.

Japan has a decent scene, no? I would just go find them and play in person. Netplay has input and network lag so it's not optimal if you can avoid it at all.

edit: so I finally got around to setting this up, but it doesn't connect to anyone and vice versa. I have it allowed in my firewall, netplay build, correct ISO, netplay AR code, etc. etc. Any idea what the problem is?

edit2: never mind, I fixed it. West coast come play me.

We've got a little skype group going on with Euro people who are just starting out and some higher skilled people. Drop me a pm with your skypename and I'll add you.

As for checking the version, I'm not entirely sure. It should be in the filename of the ISO? I'm not at home right now so cant check myself

Basically, increasing the dead zone increases the amount of distance you have to move the analog stick until the game registers it. I'd run it at 0 but if you use a brand new controller for example, I'd try to have some deadzone, maybe 5-10.

I have it currently set to 0 deadzone and I felt like the used controller was responding much better to dash dances and moonwalks than the new controller and I thought it might have to do with controller settings. thanks for the tip shikyo

I know nothing about what it actually is but yeah that would be close to the general rule of thumb I go by. Basically lower the buffer as much as you can until it starts to lag on the menu/char select screen.

Try if it can handle Project M, Gamecube games are more demanding than Wii games generally(Yes, they indeed did go backwards in specs with Wii).

Another thing is that it can depend on stage, for example FD can start lagging when it does the crazy flashy background thing but if you stick with like Battlefield or Yoshi's story you should be fine. Don't even try Fountain of Doom

Is it done forever? If so I should like to join the TL skype group. I'm a pretty low level g&w/puff but I'm getting better. I feel like I could be some good practice for foxes.

CPU since emulations of anything is extremely cpu intensive. It's why we still don't have a ps3 emulator.

I've heard about a 30 FPS hack that makes it doable for older computers. Though apparently it looks a bit more choppy and the sound skips a lot.

I haven't actually used it yet so I'm not sure whether it works properly and how to set it up. If you're really stoked try googling around?

Protip #1: Set Dolphin priority to high. Goes from 30-55 fps when fancy stuff happens(completely unplayable) to straight stable 60 fps at all times.

this is pretty weird. I havent got that cube port for the pc yet so im playing this with my xbox controller, and suddenly things like wavedashing and dashing in general feel so much easier. In particularly wavedashing (which im new to) where I used to accidentally shield after a wavedash, whereas now it doesn't happen. The cube controller I normally use is 2 months old so what would be the cause for this? Is it the dolphin emulator, or the fact that a cube controller has 10 year old technology and a new xbox controller is just more advanced?

Probably because the GC controller has analog shoulder buttons. When you wavedash and don't let go quickly enough you'll often get a lightshield, whereas the xbox controller is digital so you either press or don't press and can let go faster.

the latest Dolphin version should definitely not have feature regressions I guess I should have the same version as other people to play against, though

I'll try building from source

Does this work with more than 2 players? I've been trying to get this work with my housemates, but when the third joins, it seems to bump the second one out (sort of). If you try to shift them over to Pad2 to let someone else join, then the last player shows up on Pad 1 and 2, and the second player disappears. When you start the game technically all 3 join, but there are only 2 slots available and some weird back and forth on who controls the second slot.

Do you mean you're running it on two computers, one of which has 2 players plugged into it? Because IIRC that does not work with Netplay.

Otherwise, I've gotten Doubles successfully running (with 4 different people) before, so otherwise it shouldn't be a problem.

I mean 3-4 computers connecting to the game in the same house. We don't have proper controllers so everyone is using keyboards.

So like GCPad, the icon, and then tell Pads 2-4 the Device will be DInput/0/Keyboard Mouse
And then
Options
>>Configure
>>GameCube
And then Device Settings, set Ports 2-4 to Standard Controller?

It should work. Just need to have all players only have 1 controller port. Many have 2 so 2 players can take up 4 ports. You can easily assign only one to each as the leader.

k, and also how do you enable items? I know it's not competitive, but it's fun for casual. Everytime I try and change it from 'None' to anything else, it doesn't stick.

It's quite a pain having to quit every game when you get FoD on random because it doesn't work for many people

I've not really used items in casuals either, mostly they're just annoying but at least they're better than in brawl with the horrible smash balls

If anyone is West Coast and plays this, PM me to be added to a TL skype chat

@Kaiser, I'm in UBC and I've played guys in North Van with 20ms delay = 0.02sec = ~1 frame

Alberta/Washington/Oregon = 25-35ms

NorCal = 40-50ms (threshold for actually attempting to play normally)

Anything else = attempt to get Falcon punches all match

I just tried that. Same thing.
Passafist port1/2 Standard
Falling port 1/2 Standard (also tried just 2)
Lord Bryon 1/2 Nothing 3/4 Standard

LordBryon sees Passafist/Falling in slots 1/2
Pass & Falling sees Pass/ LordBryon in slots 1/2

What's the cheapest place available you guys have found to buy the GC controller adapter for the PC in Canada? Cheapest I can find is around $30 CAD after shipping (don't think that's taxes either). Currently unemployed with limited funds, so I'm a bit hesitant to pay $30+ at the moment.

edit: found this, but it's not really any cheaper.

Maybe I should just wait until I land a job before buying it and buy a new GC controller with it as well. Not sure if I'm even able to find my old GC controller, and if I can it might not be in the best condition...

Raphnet is better from what I've heard but more expensive. I think my Mayflashes were around $20 each which isn't so bad.

As for new GC controllers, wait for that shit to go on sale. Regular price is like $50 but they go on sale for around $25 sometimes which is nuts

What's the advantage of Raphnet over Mayflashes btw? Lower input delay or something? Better drivers?

Also, I live in Kelowna Kyuukyuu, I think I read in the smash locator thread you made that you live in Vancouver? Is there too much lag between Kelowna and Vancouver to play online you think?

Nah, usually within one or two states/provinces is very playable. I get around 40-50ms with 343 in NorCal, around 25-30ms with Trozz, which is all noticeable but not too bad at all.

And yeah I think Raphnet has slightly better latency (or so people claim), and it's not mass produced like the Mayflash. I've had no complaints with my Mayflash though.

I wouldn't mind trying this out sometime either if anyone's interested.

I haven't done netplay before and am on a college connection, and I heard you couldn't host without portforwarding your router (like Broodwar), but if anyone wants to test this out with me, I'm up for it.

My game is not coming up with any netplay functionality. I currently have the ISO downloaded and am under the AR functions with a lot of cheats (some odd ones to such as remove Zelda skirt... some people)

Any idea why this is?

ALSO:

Is anyone interested in playing N64 games with Netplay?

HOW TO DO IT:

This video will show you how to do it FOR ALL GAMES (not just the ones listed)

Only things you need to do is path project 64 to your "games folder" you've created for your ISO's and enable "Directory Recursion" which is a fancy way of saying "look in subfolders".

It's likely the case that I don't.

Now I feel relatively stupid I'll go download that hahaha thanks

EDIT:

Do I have to create my own NETPLAY version?
https://dolphin-emu.org/docs/guides/netplay-guide/

Or is there somewhere I can download it?

EDIT 2:

I've found the "START NETPLAY" function but it keeps saying "failed to connect" I assume that's because I already need to know where im trying to connect to before I connect? Hosting works just fine

ALSO - The IRC channel says "need to be active for 30 seconds before registering" ... so ? I'm currently sitting there am I registered? haha

FINAL EDIT: Tinkered around enough I've figured it all out

Hard to say, there's probably multiple reasons why this could happen.

Have you installed anything recently? Are your hardware temperature readings okay?

I think you'll probably find better help at https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/

Hmm not sure, I can't seem to immediately find an answer either. I've had it happen before, but usually a reconnect solves it.
Try the dolphin boards?

I was messing around with dolphin to try to get Netplay working; I ended up deciding to uninstall Dolphin and reinstall. Now it isn't detecting my adapter although I know it works. I've configured my gamecube controllers through my windows settings. I'm confused as to why it's stopped working all of a sudden. Maybe it's something simple I've overlooked (I'm not a tech wizard lol).

You're using the wrong rev of Dolphin. Everybody who wants to do melee netplay uses rev 652. You can find it here. Yeah, it's several thousand revs behind (and lacking a fair number of nice features/optimizations), but the dc-netplay branch is pretty neglected, unfortunately.

Start with that and see if anything changes.

Thanks for the help. I installed the right Dolphin and calibrated my controllers. I go to GCPad and none of the options register my controller stick movements (including SDL/0/GamePad). My config also has Port 1 = Standard controller. This is annoying

This is what it looks like now: + Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

Still no red mark for the control sticks, nor do the bumpers register. If I change it to DInput/0/GamePad it registers all the buttons and the triggers (in a binary sense = either fully pressed or not registered), but the sticks are still not registering anything.

Hmm... Just to make sure, did you try setting the axes manually?

I believe DInput is the preferred input method. Can you post a screenshot of that configuration?

Barring that, possibly a driver issue (though I doubt it)? Did you try uninstalling and reinstalling the adapter drivers?

I figured it out! My Axes had previously been numerical because I'm pretty sure they were on the SDL input. Once I changed the Axes to X, Y, Z, everything clicked. Thanks again for the help, good sir.

Just wanted to stop in to say thanks for the guide. It's actually all quite confusing and this post did better than even the Smashboards ones that talked about the setup.

But yes, I am starting to notice a big difference between online and IRL play. It's mostly due to the unavoidable ping and how much you really need to know the exact timings of your character.

Glad it helped! Thats exactly what I was going for

And yeah, it's definitely noticeable but I think its quite playable at 2-3 buffer, just dont take it too 'seriously', and focus on reads.

In the end, CRT is where its at. But netplay gives a nice fix.

I'm from Costa Rica so the best I can get is people from FL and play with 6 buffer , anyone know if with a VPN or something like that I could manage to lower my ping?

Dolphin netplay uses p2p. A VPN is probably not going to improve your ping.

Just started with netplay and have a quick question. If I have the gecko code for flashing red when you miss l-cancels enabled, does that happen for whoever I'm playing against too if I'm hosting? Or does it not even happen in netplay? I just figured some people might find it annoying, so I wouldn't want to bother anyone.

It doesn't show up for others. It shouldn't cause a problem, if it does you'll notice it desyncs, etc.

I can't say why Dolphin is crashing, but the version you're using is very, very old. There may be emulation issues.

Try a newer version like this one:

Whats the lag like when comparing it to playing on a crt?

Whats the significance of playing on more input lag/lag in general?

Will it "ruin" my skills or whatever if I play online, and then go back to playing on a crt?

The amount of delay depends on the ping, which depends mainly on the distance to your opponent. If they're close it's hardly noticeable. I'd say 4 buffer is the absolute maximum, there's basically just a delay between what you input and what you see on screen. So it's just a timing you need to get used to. If you're used to doing extremely precise techskill on CRT you might have some trouble adapting, but overall I'd say it is possible to go back and forth. I just avoid it for a week or so before I go to a tourney.
