Not sure of the reasoning but it's standard and it makes recovery so much more fun.
I would guess that projectile spam is really annoying without friendly fire?

1. It'd make some combos ridiculously stupid to play against, imagine getting walled by a peach with falco lasers shooting through her.
2. It makes the game way more strategic. You actually have to space your moves not just throw them into the clusterfuck knowing you can't hurt your ally. More importantly, you can't save allies without friendly fire!
