Given that there's no skillup event right now, I'm not sure if it's worth the stress/frustration. I had about 4 drop while running Hyperion before the 1.5x ended and went 0/4 on skillups. Nothing to write home about, I know, but I'm just thinking in terms of planning what's most efficient for my week.

- Engaging/interesting gameplay via puzzling. The puzzle aspect of the game is like the "micro" of starcraft. It's difficult to master. Board manipulation is multi-dimensional too - sometimes you want to make as many combos as possible, sometimes you want to minimize combos, sometimes you want to get an exact number of combos to do an exact amount of damage. Sometimes you want to only match certain colors and avoid matching others, and those matched colors must be in varying patterns (3 in a row, 4 in a row, 5 in a row, 6 in a row, 8 in a row, etc). - Strategical depth via team building. The game is well balanced, and there are lots of varying and viable strategies. Lots of opportunities to theorycraft. - Constant new events, features, and updates. New dungeons and monsters come out every few weeks. Older and weaker monsters get buffed/reworked every now and then. New dungeons come out with different mechanics to consistently provide a new challenge. - Gotta catch'em all. Collecting monsters is fun. - Grindy. Most people don't like grinds, but it does provide a constant feel of progression and tangible improvements to your team. Along with the large variety of monsters you can use, it allows you to form unique teams and get attached to your monsters/teams. And just like other parts of the game, the grind is multi-dimensional. It's not "run 1 dungeon over and over again so you level up your monsters for small stat increases." There are different dungeons to grind depending on what you want to grind for, and leveling is just 1 of 4 different things you can max out on a monster, with 2 of them (cooldown on active skill, and awakenings) improving your monsters in other ways besides just stats. - RNG. While it's everywhere in this game including skill-ups and dungeon drops, in particular I'm talking about the REM - the monsters you get through this premium egg machine cannot be obtained anywhere else and are extremely strong, essentially defining your experience. As much as people like to complain about RNG, gambling is fun and addictive. - Not really pay2win. While spending money will help a lot, the game hands out tons of free magic stones anyway such that everything in the game is accessible, doable, and enjoyable without having to spend anything. Plus there's no PvP so you can't really get ahead of anyone.

I really like the art of most of the things. Cute girls are a big bonus. Wouldn't want to collect ugly things. I like that developers are actively updating all the time. Not even new content, just the fact there is a new week-long event 4 days after the last one is superb. Of course the fact there actually IS new content being churned out all the time is a large plus. There's a close relationship between the employees and the players. I know this applies more to the JP server with their twitter feeds and PAD celebrities creating video content almost everyday, but it's starting to extend to NA too with the twitch streams with Antonio and Michael. So far they seem to only stream when there are announcements to make, which may be anywhere between 1 week to 4 weeks from the last stream. Collaborations. It's a great way to generate a lot of hype, even if it falls flat sometimes ![]() Gonna reiterate collecting, I feel that's a huge reason why many people play. The fact it's a single player game. Now don't get me wrong, I like interacting with other players too, but the fact I can just play the game at any ungodly hour of the day without having to depend on activity from other players is really really convenient. The friend system is essentially what allows the multiplayer part of the game, but once again, they don't need to be active. And speaking of friend system... An easy and convenient way to check on the progress of your friends. The friend list may be simple, it only shows rank and whatever monster they are currently using, but if you use their cards often, you'll recognize them, and slowly seeing their leader grow to level 99, then +297, then max skilled as well, gives you a bit pride for your friends as well. It's like "hey I knew this guy and was friends with him before he became famous and hypermaxed his lead" Of course knowing that your friends are watching your cards grow too, will give you the motivation to continue working on your stuff as well. and lastly something a bit beyond your control, the community is great. I love posting about pad here on teamliquid, and reading what others have to say, there's also padx dungeon pages where players can leave comments, and of course the subreddit where I lurk on. It's definitely something i randomly look forward to checking throughout the day ![]()

one other question, does the game have the ability to fight against your friends? like just for fun, your team vs theirs? if it does, or if it did, how much does that interest you from 1 to 10?

As long as it was replaced by some other sort of combat/gameplay mechanic, then most likely yes. The puzzling part of it is what actually discourages a lot of my friends from playing it. Most of the other good features of the game are generic and characteristic of any well-designed game. No, currently there is no PvP in this game. In fact the limited social/p2p interaction in this game is one of its biggest drawbacks. PvP is a huge interest for me in any game, probably a 10. That tells you a bit about how good this game managed to do everything else right :p

One big thing besides what was mentioned is that the art for the monsters and gods are amazing.

The thing is that the puzzling part really isn't so much of a puzzle as it's something simply skill driven. Yes you have to "solve" boards but the depth of when to do damage, when to stall, when to do a certain amount of damage, and the near countless ways to build a team in interesting ways is what keeps me playing this game and spending money on it. The way the board puzzle style of damage dealing interacts with the way teams work is actually quite ingenious as it really allows you to very specifically tailor the turns you have to do what you need to do. Sometimes you want to only do about 50% HP damage to a boss to stall a turn but to push it past a health threshold where it does something that doesn't kill you that turn. Sometimes you want to ONE HIT KILL...other times you want to do absolutely no damage at all. Lots of variations.

You know how if you correctly time a press of the button with your ability/attack it does more damage? What if instead of the puzzle aspect, a similar game just had a combat system that also had a moving bar with a button you press to time your abilities/attacks? Do you think that would be an adequate replacement as "something skill driven"? I feel like what you say about "something skill driven" being an important part of the game is correct Jayme, but I also wonder if it is about keeping the player immersed in what is happening. The guy who designed puzzle and dragon really is pretty ingenious with his game design.. basically mixing a monster rpg and what was already the most addictive mobile game type.

Some people are able to get 8+ combos consistently. Most of us can't. Even if I paid to get a team like this, I wouldn't be able to use it. The beauty of PAD's puzzle system is that its sheer depth allows for a lot of personal growth. When I first started, I had trouble getting even 3 combos. Now I can do 5-6 with some regularity. I feel the sense of progression is what's important here. While a rhythm system does have potential for growth (eg. can I super jump 100 times in a row?), it's also inherently boring because it's repetitive, and takes too fucking long. In short, I think a skill-driven system must be both engaging and have a high skill ceiling.

I feel that the puzzle aspect is really good. It's easy to learn, but there's enough depth for you to become more skillful at it. What if instead of the puzzle aspect, a similar game just had a combat system that also had a moving bar with a button you press to time your abilities/attacks? Do you think that would be an adequate replacement as "something skill driven"? This is what World of Warriors used. I lost interest in it really quickly. It was boring. Gem Breaking + Gashapon is definitely a really good combo. If you don't have a silly pay2win system, players will continue playing. Players in ToS can get by by being completely f2p because they constantly give out in-game currency. Spending money just "speeds up" progression in the game for you (spend more money, more chances to draw cards, more chances to get better cards and make better teams).

Hmm since we are talking about what we like in the game. What is everyone's favorite monster? Not necessarily the one who is most useful or most used, but the one you most enjoy to have. For me it would have to be Black-Winged Goddess, Valkyrie Claire. She has amazing art and she is pretty useful to boot. I was so happy back when I rolled her. Currently using her on my Pandora and Dmeta teams.

As for favorite monster would probably have to be Pandora. Was the god I first rerolled into and progressed to T5s with and then when I stopped being a noob I realized how REM dependent she is... haha. Should probably be the card I hate the most at the same time because making a legit team for her was why I initially dropped (and continued to drop) too much money on this game. Something about that evo art also gets me with her having that slightly crazy look- eventual uevo hype~.

I just started to experiment with my Hathor team and it hasn't gone very well lol. That is one of the joys though, for a long time I have been using 1 type of team (rows) and I have raised my skill from when I 1st started considerably. Now I am venturing into a completely different type of gameplay style with Hathor and I am back to sucking hard until I get in practice. Hmm since we are talking about what we like in the game. Playing him however has made just about every other team I play so easy to use in comparison. It's nice to be able to get 8+ combos a turn no matter the board. Of all the teams I have my D/D Anubis one is the one that increased my skill the absolute most. Special mention though to my L.Metatron though who has been with me since the very beginning. I almost wanted to reroll when I pulled her from my first REM pull but I figured go big or go home. No regrets.
