Serious question, considering the patents Microsoft filed say the explicit purpose of the Kinect is to watch you and data mine you so it can generate ad data specifically for you. Also, U.S. has the worst internet infrastructure in the developed world. I'd say having forced internet is quite a legitimate concern for its citizens. So, you mean like google does every time you use one of their search tools? Or like facebook does every time you "like" something. Or twitter, or pretty much anything on the internet? Even the ads on teamliquid are personalised (for those who don't run adblock, of course). And for the umpteenth time, there is no such thing as forced internet. All you have to do is ping microsoft once every 24 hours. I have this feeling that the majority of the people complaining about the online portion of the xbone are people who are online 24/7, be it on their computer, tablet or smartphone, and it's getting a bit annoying.

So if you don't access the Xbox One with an internet connection once every 24 hours, you will be denied access to playing the games you purchased with your money? Even if it's a physical disc? That sounds like forced internet to me, chief. It also seems to serve no distinct purpose other than to keep you online so the Kinect can continue to datamine you and spy into your personal life so Microsoft can make more money. Which is a fucking scummy thing to do and I refuse to support.

Interestingly, based upon MS responses about privacy, kinect will watch you. Unless you change the privacy settings telling it not to. Tinfoil hat only comes into play about something like the NSA coming in and tapping into it.

It's quite ironic, actually, the vast majority of people complaining about the internet requirement belong to a generation that hasn't even lived in a pre-internet world. Except that's wrong. I logged into Steam just fine after booting my Desktop without any internet connection. In fact I played all of my singleplayer games just fine from Steam while completely offline. I don't know where you're getting this notion from that Steam locks you out if you don't "check in" online. Also, I live dead center in Orlando. Right next to UCF, you know, a major college. I also lived in the middle of Miami at one point in my life, also dealt with internet outages regularly during the summer there. You guys are whining that you want a more intellectual honest discussion but here you go again saying that the only reason anyone ever would not have internet is when they're in a third world country in a village that hasn't discovered it yet. As if there aren't dozens of places in the developed world where you can't access internet where you'd want to play an Xbox One and there are dozens of situations that would leave you without internet for a prolonged period of time. I fail to see how your last sentence is even remotely relevant to the situation at hand. If anything it seems like a half attempt at an ad hominem. You seem to just keep falling back on this idea that Microsoft says people who want to play without internet just aren't the customers for them and they should get a PS4 instead. What I don't understand is why Microsoft is doing this in the first freaking place. There's actually no reason other than forcing people to stay online so the Kinect can spy on you some more. EDIT: Google saving that I typed in "Asian Ass Porn" one day so that it knows I like asian ass porn for when it advertises to me is just a bit different, just slightly though, than a camera being put in my room that monitors my heartbeat, my emotions, my facial expressions, my personality, and scans my rooms for products to know what I enjoy so it can target advertisements toward me.

I.E. whether cloud processing will actually be useful, or what their used game policy actually is and how it will affect things. A huge amount of valid complaints have been brought up. You're just riding MS hard and absolutely refuse to acknowledge them. The U.S. has the worst internet infrastructure in the developed world. Our internet speed is atrocious and vast swaths of the country don't have any internet/stable internet, with even the biggest internet markets experiencing frequent internet problems because of the ass-backwards and hypocritical ISP situation in this country. This makes internet connection requirements a real concern. You cannot change regions with your XB1. Plenty of people move. Contrary to the rose-tinted goggles that many people wear, the U.S. is not THE place to live anymore. Plenty of other countries are actually better choices to live in if you are thinking about a job, healthcare, education, etc. Also, people frequently travel for long periods of time. This makes region locking another huge concern. Any time you want to play so much as a single player game or, potentially while even watching TV with the XB1 plugged in, you are spied on and datamined. This is different from services where you are only datamined for using their online service (Twitter, FB, Google). Big privacy concerns here. How about, instead of ignoring things just because you are afraid of addressing them, you man up and stop with exaggerations like saying that the only people that don't have internet live in the Himalayas.

First the online infrastructure in the US is fine. Im originally from a little town in eastern NC that didn't have internet until 2010. I have never seen another place like that in my life in the US. While there are still places that have this issue, it really isn't as prevalent as people are making it out to be. The overwhelming majority of Americans (80% according to 2013 statistics), particularly those who have owned Xbox's or PS's before, have the internet. More have the option to get internet and just choose not to. As for buying an Xbox in America and traveling to a country like India, yes that scenario is ridiculous. If you live in India and arent one of the 150 million that have internet access, then you shouldn't buy an Xbox One. I highly doubt the rural Indian population is jonesing for what MS touts as an "all in one entertainment center" anyway.

The United States accounts for much of the innovation in web technology today, yet the country ranks as low as 16th in the world in percent of residents with broadband access. Thus, modern Internet infrastructure development has strongly favored urban areas. For example, since DSL lines must be connected to a central hub with a maximal proximity, it is easy to see how dense populations achieve higher efficiency and rural areas are relatively overlooked. This has resulted in limited broadband access and much lower average download rates in outlying communities. https://sites.google.com/site/cs181usinternetinfrastructure/ Also, loved the subtle jab at me in that first line ![]() The point of this conversation is that there is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON for mandatory internet access on the Xbox One. At all. There can not be one reason that actually benefits consumers in any shape or form for including mandatory internet access. All you can do to respond to this simple fact is say that: "Well if you cant get internet buy something else" Which is a complete cop out.

It's not a matter of "having the internet". It's a matter of having reliable internet. Oh, and do you even know what region locking is and why people are mentioning the hypothetical scenario of buying an XB1 in the U.S. and then moving?

Too funny. If I transport it to India? Hahaha, the comedy of the internet rage crowd is an amazing cross between funny and pitiful. Did you just make a down to earth analysis of that parody picture ? one of must defend his king against all atrocities I have no stock in MS. I would like to know more about it thought. The complaints being thrown arent really helping any discussion at all. They are just complaints from the rage train. Bring some substance to the discussion. If you think the Kinect is plotting your assassination or if you live on the Himalayas with no internet connection then MS has pretty much said they don't care about you. That sucks but its not worth discussing really. Its just pretty annoying to have to sift through all of the ridiculous comments just to find something substantive in this thread. I.E. whether cloud processing will actually be useful, or what their used game policy actually is and how it will affect things. What substance ? People are pissed about always online and sharing restrictions imposed by MS. There's nothing else to say about it but make jokes. There are no advantages to discuss about from a consumer perspective. MS argues that its because they want us to experience the future or some PR crap, but the fact is that these restrictions are mandatory. If the online experience is part of a great future, sure do advertises your online features; just do not make it mandatory to be online with 24h checks and cover that up under "we have a vision of the future". A good online experience is not synonym of restrictions to offline. In the end though, yeah you're right: if someone's not happy with it, there's nothing to do but go PS4 (or another). Still let us ridicule what most of us consider a dumb decisions followed by pathetic PR. Anyway in the end I just find it funny more than enraging; but that may be because I'm no Xb fan. If I were, and had hoped Xbone would be a great successor to X360 maybe I'd be more angry of the disappointment.

do understand all the anger is justified, just like how it was with bw going to sc2. hardcore bw fans who knew the game the better than developers and new players were get shunned off like scrubs, "dont like sc2? go play bw" same shit. at least we have a choice with this one.

So for posterity sake: ![]() ![]() So basically even if you have a, for instance, UK licensed Xbox with a UK licensed Xbox Live account if you go to an Eastern Bloc country or third world shitholes like Portugal and China and India and Indonesia and Egypt and Israel and Greece and Turkey and Greenland and South Africa and Argentina and the biggest third world undeveloped shithole of them all without any internet access of all, Japan, you can not play any Xbox One game at all on any Xbox One. Because you can't connect to their servers.

Too funny. If I transport it to India? Hahaha, the comedy of the internet rage crowd is an amazing cross between funny and pitiful. Are you being paid for this? Yes, just like Blizzard does with Starcraft 2 (albeit after a week or so) and Steam does for its service as well. Besides, if you're a EU or US citizen, you'd have to literally be living in the middle of nowhere to not have an internet connection of some sort. Microft does this because it looks to long-term development, just like it did with Windows 8. It strongly believes that "more internet-based stuff" is what the future is going to be all about, and since the internet and its various applications have been continuingly expanding over the past twenty years, they have very good reason to believe that said trend will continue.
