I think the problem with a makeup call is that is creates an illegitimate outcome twice. Instead we are trying to fix the illegitimate outcomes.

Look, no solution is likely to be perfect. Everything will be over inclusive (such as retroactively awarding the pacer's G3 for those 2 flops) or underinclusive (even my solution is underinclusive). The goal should simply be to try to get equitable results. And lets be honest about your point about reality RowdierBob: If my rules were in place, players like Wade and Lebron wouldn't risk it.

I couldn't disagree more. At least then the refs would have a legitimate and simple purpose to limit how physical things got. However in the status quo it is coming from both sides: they have to limit the physicalness as well as try and determine if something is actually just a flop and wasn't physical at all.

I'd rather reward players for being able to dish out some physicality in a game which is supposed to be competitive and physical to some extent than rewarding players for pretending they got hit hard when they clearly didn't. I can't fathom how it is good for the game with the direction we are going of everybody flying to the ground or flailing their arms every time they are breathed on.

I agree with this, I'd rather side with overly physical play than overly cautious play (flopping). Soccer/football has the same exact issue, and when the ref just lets the players play physically and only calls blatant physical fouls the players begin to realize they are putting themselves out of position.

The issue with taking this side of the argument however, is when there are more "minor" shoves that are legitimate fouls you end up getting a lot more no calls on things that SHOULD be called...but what's worse, having a game where the refs miss a few calls and minimize flopping OR having a game where the refs miss a few calls and have flops everywhere?

The old days had it right in basketball, shit was so physical that if people were flopping like today there would straight up be FIGHTS over it or your "enforcer" would come and send a message.

I have no problems with legitimate physicality but Laimbeer used to try and deliberately hurt people by undercutting them on jump shots etc. I hate shit like that.

Wade's flopping, while something of an embarrassing blight on the game, really is pretty harmless in the grand scheme of things. The anti-flopping rules the NBA has brought in is a decent start to rectifying it as long as they keep dishing out the fines. The fines don't really matter to guys making that much money but I'd reckon the public shaming aspect to their image will eventually get them thinking twice about doing it (hopefully!).


I agree 100% that there is a big difference between playing physical and playing dirty, like Laimbeer would do. However it is the refs jobs to make sure it doesn't cross that line, which is seemingly why they were created in the first place.

I also agree the fines are a step in the right direction but until the big stars start getting major fines nobody will take it seriously. You could give out a fine every game to players like Wade, James and Ginobli if you were actually enforcing the rule. I think they need to be called out more by people with credibility, like Magic and others.

Yes First Take is generally garbage, but I remember seeing this interview and thinking it was interesting and gave the point of view of the ref and precautionary reffing and league edicts.

Not to be a huge dick about it, but it's always the same people bitching. People who've never watched basketball during the regular season drop in here to preach about the grave injustices of flopping, plus some regulars in the thread who just can not seem to abide by it - even though its been a 15 page issue in every single iteration of this thread. For some reason, it has to be brought up again because its killing the sport. I don't see how basketball in America can possibly survive this flopping epidemic.

I'm astonished by this showing from the Grizz. Last second 3 doesn't matter. Grizz have shown absolutely nothing to tell us they can win this game.

Feels like their was a lot more fouls than usual this half.

i dont even bother with the discussion because in the end its upto the NBA to hand out suspensions, not us. And we all know how well NBA front office deals with all manners of flagrants, techs, and blown calls. (read: doesn't do jack shit about it)

It's going to be really interesting to see how SA and Miami change in the next few years. I figured the Super Friends would keep chugging along until Wade broke down, but apparently after next year, the luxury tax will make the team just untenable. So what do you do? Try to ride Wade for as long as you can and dump Bosh? Dump Wade and hope Bosh can pick up the slack? Seems like a downgrade even in a best case scenario. Ask all of them to restructure?

And of course the ways of SA are inscrutable, but, sadly, it probably won't include Pop.

Funny thing about this game is that the Spurs are getting to the rim easily but are shooting piss-poor otherwise.
