In Defiance, the future is a dangerous place. Starship wreckage is raining to Earth in massive “Arkfall” events that transform the landscape. Experience one first-hand as countless other players – and a star from the Syfy series – battle to survive and profit. Watch Ark Hunters wield the weapons of tomorrow against alien-hybrid horrors in a dynamic, scaling encounter, then travel seamlessly through a unified world into the weekly TV series. This – Defiance – is the future of transmedia entertainment.
The game is an MMO TPS (third person shooter). It is launching on all major platforms, Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. Trion the developer have already proved they have what it takes to launch a AAA MMO and support it in the long term, with their flagship title RIFT maintaining realtively high subscription numbers in the west.
There is very little information released about the specifics of the game, however there are a few videos floating around of gameplay.
The universe is very rich, and both the TV show and Game will bounce off of each other.
Beta signups are up and I suggest anyone interested get signed up now as they will be ramping up testing very soon!
It also seems like SyFy really wants this series to work out, they hired the guy who made up the dothraki language in Game of Thrones to do 6 (at least I think it was 6) alien languages and after watching all the behind the scenes stuff it looks like they are putting in a lot of effort, so hopefully this won't be another show that SyFy cancels after a season or two.
And yeah, the game will be buy to play, so no subscription.
So wait, since the game is being released co-currently with the TV series, would players' actions have any bearing on the show? Like, say, if an encounter takes place and something goes horribly wrong, is it mentioned in the show in some way? (bad example of course, but the question stands)

That's what the game producers said. Show impacts game and game impacts show Which makes choosing race and faction so much more important.
EDIT: sorry, let me add a bit more to my post to make it worthy enough to be here..... The graphic style and weaponry looks exactly like the same concept from Firefall. The style of game with random events occurring and having players rush over to see what is there and stopping the "unknown" forces is exactly like what Rift used.
Now I never played Firefall, but Rift while fun at first dropped off in playability so quickly. The 'Rifts' as they were called in the game did spice things up from the normal grind to level (kill XX amount of bees) but after 30 levels it was just the same thing over and over again.
I hope as they start to release more info on the gameplay AKA if and how they plan to have PvP in the game, it could be worth while to give it a try but they fucked up PvP in Rift so badly, we will see how it occurs here..
SECOND EDIT: I looked a bit more into it and it seems like the PvP will be arena type need to grind out points in the Arena to be able to get certain gear and progress. Fuck.
PvP seems to be based around world PvP and not "arena-type pvp", shadow war is one type of PvP and it happens in the open world (seems similar to instant adventures in Rift, only PvP focused) and it's supposedly 50 vs 50 and happens in many different places, but you have to flag yourself, you can't gank randoms. So while you run around doing PvE you will suddenly see a 50-player PvP group run past you, so it's pretty easy to want to join in. There's other PvP things as well though but they haven't released details about it yet I think. They also mentioned there will be only one shard so there will never be "dead servers". (Meaning they will probably just create a new instance of the zone when it's highly populated and let you swap freely between them.)

well theres only human or the alien race, and its rly no difference other then look also there is no faction
Has anyone heard anything overly negative about this game? The more I look into it the more appealing it seems. I know there's an NDA in place but often times people still get glimpses or hear about stuff. The Ark Hunter code hunting missions they are doing is pretty cool as well and gives people opportunities to level up their EGO before the game even comes out. I've found that to be a nice little touch to add to immersion.
Anyway, my primary question if there has been anything negative heard about this game yet. I'm probably gonna pick it up for PS3 as long as between now and launch nothing really steers me away from it. Anyone else on here planning on playing on the PS3?
Looking forward to the show more now that I've had a chance to spend some good time in the PS3 BETA. The game is a blast and I went out and pre-ordered my first ever Ultimate Edition because I've enjoyed it so much. I'd encourage more people to check out the game if they have already.
I'll admit, the game is somewhat underwhelming at the moment.
I'd most closely equate it to a MMO version of Borderlands. Lots of different guns, lots of different styles, but not much in the way of character customization. The skill tree isn't all that much to go on, and the community is still establishing itself.
Arkfalls (the Defiance version of 'Rifts') are fun though. Chaotic, and potentially dozens of players will congregate for them. There's plenty of side-stuff to do too, rampages, hotshots, and driving tests are scattered about.
Honestly, I don't know how deep the game will go. I'm mostly through about 1/3rd of the San Fransisco, I don't know if that's the entire game area ATM , or just one piece. I suspect it's just one area of several, and it's fairly exhaustive.
Only getting a piece of the storyline though is problematic. I hope the TV show is good and helps fill in holes and gaps.
I'm very excited for the television show, but I am skeptical about the game. I'll be cautious towards a game if it is co-released with a television show or movie because they're generally rushed - that's why a vast majority of video games based on movies are shit, because they have to be out by a certain time to cash in on the movie hype, whether they're finished/good or not. I also haven't heard a lot about this game or show, today was the first time actually (oddly enough a commercial on Youtube watching TL interviews), but this thread also makes me believe no one knew anything about this game, which doesn't mean it's bad, but if it was awesome you would think it would have more hype behind it.
I'll probably wait for the show and decide after that. If the show is great, then I'll play the game because even if the game is merely average, the universe of the show/game being interested would pick up the slack and make it enjoyable. I wish the game had a free trial.
Its seems to be like Borderlands on a big server but without the crazy weapons. The skilltree is just % increase here, % crit there. The whole game has 4 skills in it.
Played the last beta with a friend, just to see if it was going to by worth the buy.
As a poster before me said it was a large open world Borderland MMO without all the cool skills or weapons. Not sure about the full release but in the beta it felt like the gameplay was rushed and nothing was really explained. There was one point where after ~15 mission an item pickup was explained by the AI after me and my friend had already used it 2-3 times before that. I still don't understand how any of the weapon mods work since it was never explained....ever. The vehicles were fun and we spent a good portion of the 2nd day of the beta just driving around stalking people and running stuff over, since we already got as far as we could on the main story.
It was fun for what it was, but definitely not worth the $60 release price. I might pick it up later on when its $15-20.

It's still Sunday right now in the US. Check back in ~31-32 hours, it'll have aired around then.
I honestly don't expect much from the show and based on the reviews so far there are too many gaps in the game to be filled by what the show has to offer. The game isn't going to have much (if any) impact on the show until the second season when the writers are allowed more freedoms.
Oh my God I just got done watching the 2 hour series premiere.
Its literally the second coming of battle star galactica. It has everything to make it the greatest sci fi property ever. Brutal post apoc but not afraid to use the color blue, A Guy with a top hat, fallout reference, GCI thats good looking but not taking too much money away from the rest of the show, Mecha's robots, Credibly different alien races ( I swear one is based off of being carbon copy roman culture implanted on a modern alien people) A native american actor leading a lynching party, cool but not unbelievable weapons, great writing and amazing actors.
I'm going to need to sleep to give a better description of it but its made me so goddamn happy I have to share the good news. Sci fi actually lives again.
Edit: I'm thinking about it and they not only put in a really nice Fallout 3 reference into the last scene but also a really good Wild wild west reference (you know the one where the crazy guy from the south builds a giant mecha spider).
I'm still split on the game btw but the TV show is amazing and anyone that enjoys sci fi should watch it.
I wish this would be on sale for like 20 bucks or so. I'd love to give it a try, but given my current financial situation plus the somewhat negative feedback, I may have to hang back and wait for a sale
The TV show is the best science fiction show on television right now I think, then again there's very little competition. Still better than anything I've seen for years. It did have some really annoying things though, which mostly come from it targeting children/teens as audiences. It's remarkably similar to Terra Nova in some regards, in particular annoying teen love drama and the main character are carbon copies of each other.
Some really silly stuff are annoying like how stereotypical the different species are, like the white haired dudes are all selfish Ferengi/capitalists and the white Voldemorts are all servant/quartermaster types, all have extremely similar personalities. Meanwhile humans are as usual jack of all trades with wide arrays of personalities. I would hope sci-fi/fantasy to one day grow out of that but I guess not.
Hey there I'm about halfway through the pilot and so far, it is quite good indeed. I can definitely understand why one would say that it is the best sci fi show on TV right now. Hopefully the rest of the season will be as entertaining as what I've seen so far.
I just saw it and I was quite bored throughout the episode. I don't see how a love story between teens is "sci-fi". The second half was a bit better, but I couldn't stop laughing when I saw that "the race made for war" was destroyed by kids using 80 year old MP5s at 300m. This is nowhere near BSG.
I'll keep watching, the setting can be interesting, and we don't know much about what's going on yet.
Pilot is decent, but it seems like it's going to revolve too much around one place. I hope it's not another Terra Nova or Continuum. The world seemed pretty rich/interesting, some things were quite silly, but we've seen that in Firefly too. Liked the soundtrack. Going to watch a few more before deciding whether it's worth watching.
The pilot wasn’t amazing but I’d still rate it above average. People typically abuse post-apoc to draw attention with an intriguing setting and then bore the audience to death with a predictable soap opera about relationships between the protagonists while explaining almost nothing about the apocalypse (Revolution, Falling Skies, Terra Nova, Walking Dead, almost every post-apoc anime and so on). The pilot is quite good in this sense because it frontloads a lot of information while still leaving a lot of mystery.
What stood out for me was frequent use of low quality CGI (there are segments which would look a lot better when filmed with props and the CGI is quite obvious) On the other hand I really liked the music which screams Bear McCreary and even though the violins are way too similar to BSG I still like the modern electronic bits, it’s a nice crossover. Also looking at the staff list, Scott Stewart directed the pilot which gets my hopes up, I really liked the Priest.
Just saw the pilot last night, was not bad at all... but not amazing, either. A lot of standard tropes from the post apocalyptic genre plus your standard fare drama. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it lacks a certain feel that the really great shows have. That being said, I do like the cast and I hope the show survives for the sake of future video-game / TV cross overs.
Has anyone else played the game, and is willing to post his impressions? The setting and the overall "MMO Borderlands" theme attract me, but i don't know if it's worth the price tag. Bear in mind i'll be playing on console.

Idk Its like half firefall half border lands with cod level graphics. I'm not sure either on weather its good enough yet or not but I think it shows promise at this point.
Just watched the pilot. The show is kinda boring at the first half and it picks up at the second. Overall its a low budget tv show which cant come close to serious scifi projects. It will probably be canceled by the end of first season if not before. Ill keep watching and hoping it will get better (story at least).

First season is already finished. So at least you get to see a season.
They put 100 million into this and the game for 1 season worth of content. Its not low budget at all.
It also bagged 1.3 mill in the 19-49 which makes it the best premiere the network has gotten in 7 years. hopefully it stays for a while and makes real sci fi a thing again.
swtor was a 200 million dollar investment into something that had 10 year old graphics by a company that had no experience in making an mmo before exclusive to a platform that has a competitor that defines everything that the mmo market revolves around.
This feels like a shoein for failure. None of the elegance in gameplay/flow design that made Bungie what they are. Tie in to a TV show that seems to be a lot more about politics and relationships than challenge and combat (for the simple reason that you can't do that economically on a show, as GoT and BsG both demonstrated. Open world MMos are notoriously bad at delivering stories, so it won't mesh well.
The kinaesthetics are mediocre, definitely not to WoW smoothness levels, the combat is better than normal MMO combat but waaay worse than most shooters, so you're marketing to a group who don't exist- people who play MMOs tend not to care about combat mechanics. People who don't do, so you're not selling anything that group A desperately wants, and you're not selling it hard enough to convince group B.
The interface is horribly designed, the game flow feels around MMO typical and in general it's just not standing out in any regard at all.
If you want to make a successful MMO, you HAVE to stand out, preferably in some aspect of gameplay.
Ain't saying it won't be fun, but it won't be fun enough. Supporting an expensive TV show AND an MMO development is going to ruin their coffers. They're all in on this one and if it doesn't work very, very well, I think they may not survive it.
Like others have said it is just so god damn cheesy and the writing is something i could've done when i was 15 years old. Most, if not all the characters seem very predictable and boring. I was surprised that there were actually a few "famous" actors in the cast but i don't think they can save this show. Sad thing is that it's probably the best scifi going on atm atleast it is better than that dinosaur show which isn't saying much
Watched the opening. Not terrible but not amazing. Good acting at least. Unlikely to be the next bsg but it can hold its own. Needs more scifi otherwise it will just get boring.
When I read someone earlier say this show is like new BSG I was so happy. I then watched it and.... I must have been watching a different show then that guy. Defiance would be new BSG if only it had: 1. Better story 2. Better acting 3. Better CGI ..in that order of importance.
I watched about 20 minutes of it, thought it had the usual "Sci fi original movie" acting in it, then heard it actually had a huge budget. Pretty disappointing, the acting/writing was incredible cheesy/lame, imo.

Ok low budget is a bad term. What i should have wrote is B production. Terra nova was 5-10 mill per episode, had better graphics and not that bad story and it still failed. Scifi channel is known for making bad tv shows and movies so my hope for this is low.Remember Stargate universe? It was much better visually made but first season had too much drama and by the time they remembered its a scifi show in second season it was already too late,no one was watching it anymore. It is heartbreaking how scifi genre on tv went to hell.

Terra Nova had pretty terrible story. That is why it failed. And too much focus on teen drama.
When are these story writers going to figure out that putting kids in SF stories is a big fail!! BGS had 0 kid main characters = Good. Star Wars older movies = no kids = good! Star Wars new movies = kid main char = terrible! Star Trek = kid characters always least liked but luckily none were important = great show! Firefly = no kid characters = great show! Farscape = no kid characters = great show! Falling Skies = kids everywhere = terrible show! Revolution = kids again ((and their mothers) = bad show! V (new) = too much focus on kids (and mothers) = terrible show! . . .

I would be quite interested in this as well Nobody playin this?
I know someone who has been playing the game for a fair while, and though he seems to at least be content with it (I personally feel he has low standards for MMO's), it is incredibly buggy. Going into battlegrounds has resulted in many of his items just being flat out deleted for some reason, rendering issues that persisted from beta (terrain/people just vanishing for no reason), considerable server issues (some of which result in weird server selection windows appearing with no options - we just presume they are remnants from the game's alpha), significant repeating issues with the Arkfalls (think rifts from Rift but more likely to spawn in places you can't interact with them in), doing certain Arkfalls resets your Arkfall counter, weapon issues, vehicle issues, etc. Like most games, it is extremely untested and incomplete. Arkfall contribution/rewarding is also entirely fucked up.
I was in the beta, and to me it felt like a very cheap Tabula Rasa clone without any of the attraction. Same generic quest system that has been done to death, uninteresting enemies, unintelligent AI, empty world. They have random quest/event-like instanced things here and there to kind of fake having a real world, but to me Guild Wars 2 events are like the bare minimum I expect from a game world today, and those were too small scale, easy and boring to be of note.
The game has no way to disable sensitivity-based mic... except blocking the player. We reported this in beta. It's still annoying people to this day.
I'm a very hard man to please when it comes to games, especially RPG's (the last decent RPG anything I played had to be BG2, I find the generic quest system these games use horribly boring), but this MMO in particular came off as a huge cash grab; I have no real idea what they are trying to do with the TV series, though. Rift was considerably more interesting as a game world in general; it rewarded exploration with artifacts and puzzles. Defiance blocks everything off the beaten path that they thought of (re: not enough to stop me) with invisible walls.
Animations were dull and rigid, just like Rift. Jumping comes off as incredibly goofy and floaty. Bear Mcreary did the soundtrack but it's incomparable to his SOCOM 4 or Dark Void soundtracks. Rode the wub wub fad a little too hard, destroyed the soundtrack's potential.
Just my thoughts from my admittedly limited experience and extended conversations. This game was not ready for beta when I played it.
I'm playing with it and enjoying it a bit. The first week or so was a wash because of all the technical difficulties and server troubles. Once they released the 1.1 patch almost all of those went away with a few exceptions but for the most part its pretty smooth. Graphics are better then the competitors in the market with a lot of cod graphics in it but with blue being used in a lot of different spots so it isn't a gray and brown mess. It doesn't really have anything special but it doesn't have anything bad either.
If I wasn't flush with cash I probably wouldn't buy it. Its a nice game and has a lot on it that you can do but I don't think that its got enough to make it a 60 buck game. I don't see anyone complaining about any real problems they have with it if that helps.
Judgeing a game based on your beta experience with it is pretty stupid.
Nothing personal. I don't think anyone in the video game media industry is particularly credible and your channel is now a major source of information (and I would say reviews but you'd tell me you don't do them). I think at some point (the PS2 marketing) it's pretty fair to say you're deeply ingrained in the industry. To not view your videos with the same scepticism I view all other video game media would be dumber than to assume developers are ignorant of your influence, wouldn't you think?
just watched the pilot , it was pretty cool , i urge everyone to watch it. its a real scifi
only bits that annoyed me were right at the end where the pacing just decided to give in altogether. and i would have liked it if they'd + Show Spoiler +
Just watched this and its terrible. This show had so much potential with this storyline, however all the cringy lines and scenes are just god awful. Little things like the main guy constantly moving steering wheel left and right when driving alone (come teh fuck on, seriously). Meanwhile the exchange of terrible try to make this character funny but utter fail lines. Also the whole attack thing has no substance at all. Some random aliens, attacking, and there is no context to who teh fuck they are. Just," oh we are all gonna die".
And the whole doc thing making the ball thing into some sort of weapon. LOL. It was like a child was having fun when the made that up. So stupid and no possible conceptual realism to it at all.
I am sorry, but this just wasted my evening. I gave it a chance, but was hugely dissapointed. I cannot see this lasting long.

at the start when the man confronts the kid while theyre playing cards
his "best man" gets shot and killed
who actually killed him?
i thought the man/father had killed him. then they are all like "oh hes dead its a real shame". then they just carry on as normal. i was like "omg the father man is evil and should be brought to justice, he just got his man killed due to his rage, and the mayor woman nor anyone else seems to care"

You are making a big deal out of nothing. Did you even watch to the end scene? They are obviously hinting at a deeper conspiracy with the former major being involved with the attack. You don't have more context because they haven't given it to you yet. You can't say it has no substance when you don't know what kind of substance it actually have behind it.

And it's not dumb to suggest developers are aware of TB's influence, but it's fairly dumb to automatically assume that means TB is bought off by them. Not to mention that despite being payed to promote Planetside 2, he's critiqued it quite heavily, as he's stated was part of the agreement with them.

I think at some point (the PS2 marketing) it's pretty fair to say you're deeply ingrained in the industry. To not view your videos with the same scepticism I view all other video game media would be dumber than to assume developers are ignorant of your influence, wouldn't you think?
Think whatever you want but when you accuse me of being paid off in public I will slap you the fuck down, I have little patience for liars.

Hey TB, love your channel. I will say that it would be nice to see a bit more criticism at times. Also, the guy you quoted does have a legitimate point, even though he may have not phrased it in the most palatable manner. Nobody is accusing you of anything; it is common sense to view all content created for profit purposes with a grain of salt as the content creator has to maintain sensitivities with respect to maximizing both short and long-term revenue potential.
By the way, I have never played the game, nor have any intent to do so. However, I do like the show so far. It is "true" sci-fi, unlike a lot of other shows that just skirt the edges.

I cannot see this lasting long.
there is no context because TEHY STILL DONT KNOW why they attacked them ... lol
also play the game and you know more then you need ^^ ofc you dont know all if you onywatch the series
series is GREAT game is fun
so to all, dont listen to him, he seems to hate scifi overall, if you like scifi you will like it !
ps;: there is context, you can know who the aliens are, realism in a terraformed world in the future ? go watch crime ^^ seems he hated series before watched it and so he was like "this is shit this is shit this too this here too ..."
You still have no idea who they are at all. They dont feel real to me at all. There is nothing other than "omg they are coming". I know its first episode, but it still sucks. Look at first episode of BSG. It has context as to what is going on.
I am a big SF fan. This just sucks. Sorry to burst your bubble.
You know, you could at least watch the entire episode before coming here and ranting about how much the plot sucks...
Honestly... Yes, the BSG reboot pilot was awesome, but we also already knew what the hell was going to happen.
I'll admit, the Defiance Pilot was a wee bit camp, but most pilots are, the second episode was far better I feel, and starts to bring out the nature of some of the people and the races as well as just how Fucked over the world became after terraforming/arcfall.

I tried it and watched three episodes. I really want to like this show, but I don't. No where in comparison to BSG or SGU. The characters are easily forgettable, the plot is kinda interesting, but the execution is bad. I really liked it at first when he was a Han Solo type guy, but now that the main character is this investigator, it completely takes away from any depth he could have had. The intro and beginning of the pilot were so interesting. The city itself was just boring. Anyone else watch this?

Because scifi is a languishing genre on tv, and people want/expect everything from it to have the same standards as other shows. I personally don't give a shit, I like the scifi/western feel of it, reminds me of Firefly.
I'm quite disappointed that they confined the story to the city. If the characters remained the nomads they were at the beginning of the pilot, there could have been some interesting developments. Now it's just CSI:The Future. It's closer to Firefly than to BSG indeed, but can't compete with either.
Bumping this beacuse the show is about to reach the make or break portion of its game affects the show show affects the game promise.
The next episode of the show deals with the plague that you've been dealing with in the game for the past few weeks. If they will ever redeem their failures to unit the games it'll be next week.

Wow.....relax buddy.
I was confused by that overreaction until I remembered that this is the internet. Where acting like an asshole gets you more viewers.
