DMG is where people should be starting to learn how to play the game (everything besides aim). what i mean by this is that DMGs still like to run around like headless chickens, but headless chickens with good aim. Those that are good DMGs (basically on their way to LE+ already) actually think about their plays and whatnot, not just playing deathmatch in MM
Plenty of LEMs are just decent shots with some individual game sense. Generally in MM the teamwork is rather limited. Usually you'll get people to more or less hold their spots as CT and you normally have 3-4 people who'll listen to the plan and Rambo who'll lurk and say other people are shit for having less kill than him. Your very own turbo-baiting Get_Right minus any semblance of talent!
Frankly the only difference I see between DMG to LEM is people are faster and aim better, and they have better game sense. But the teamwork still isn't there. If anything, you have more egotistical fucks with high opinions of themselves there.
I have a question! I suck monkey gazebo balls. I get maybe 1:5 kdr in public DM games. I'm so bad at shooters and it takes me so long to notice any improvement. The best way for me to get better would be to just play DM 24/7 and practice aiming (right?), but it's so frustrating I really don't want to. So I was wondering, would playing ranked matches at Silver 1 or whatever I am be any less frustrating? Will I play against people of my skill or will it be just as bad as public DM? My goal is to figure out a way to enjoy playing while still slowly improving.

Well yeah, that's kinda the point of a ranking system.
Valve DM is usually gold-nova-range aim. You will have much more fun playing MM (although how much you will improve may be debatable). Lots of people warm up in deathmatch for a certain amount of time or frags before moving on to (matchmaking/esea/etc) for some actual games.
A few tips to help you improve usually involve lowering your sensitivity (I have no idea what it its but it's too high) and STANDING STILL WHILE SHOOTING. Eventually, learn to strafe-shoot (aka tap the opposite movement direction to your current momentum the instant before shooting to get an accurate shot even while moving).
My warmup is usually 15-20 minutes of playing on aim maps (im usually on fragshack's aim server or NetCodeGuides' aim server) then like 10 minutes of surfing just to get my movement down (fuck KZ yo).
but the best way to get better at MM is to MM (DM'ing will only take you so far).
Thanks (: I'll see how it goes. Thought it might be filled with smurfs or hackers for some reason. Looking forward to firing whole clips off at other players without either killing them or dying. I'll check out my sensitivity. I remember I tried practicing strafe-shooting on deathmatch but I was just so fucking bad it didn't matter. When I get a little better I'll make sure to practice it.

Adren has a good video on finding your sensitivity

I got better from spamming matchmaking too. DM is just getting hit in the back of the head over and over. I tried aim maps too, but those are super boring for me. I got better at LoL by playing ranked, got better at SC2 by laddering, I don't see why you can't get better at CS from matchmaking.
Like everything else, you aren't going to get better at the game by not playing the game. Maybe practice counterstrafing on a private map with sv_showimpacts 1 in console.
I have a question about strafe-shooting/counterstrafing. That is, what previous posters have called pressing in the opposite direction to your movement to stop for an accurate shot. My question is whether all professional players use mechanical keyboards? I'm thinking that a mechanical keyboard would allow you to stop faster and therefore shoot faster.
Why would a mechanical keyboard make you stop faster? It's the same thing, mechanical keyboards just feel nicer. That said, Starcraft players value good mechanical keyboards way more than CS players in general.
mechanical keyboards aren't so much about speed as they are about being able to transition reliably from on to off and back very very very rapidly and accurately even under very erratic press-patterns and differing amplitudes of depression. And they feel boss to type on but that's different.
So i was just playing a competitive match. Game froze up on me mid way through first half and I got DCed from game. I hit reconnect instead of abandon and it says "failed to connect" and then doesn't let me try to reconnect anymore. Not sure if I get abandon or if the whole game just crashed.... wtf?
