1. e4 Reasons in the spoiler. + Show Spoiler [reasons] + Ok, so obviously our strength in this game is that we are many, and he is few; we have a lot of knowledge between the lot of us, but this is only valuable when working with a familiar opening, where we ALL have that knowledge. If we open with something weird, it might be the equivalent of a 1v1 since few of us will know what's going on. If we open with e4, which is very common, we have a good chance that many of us will understand what's going on in the early game, strengthening our advantage. If we open with another, less common move, fewer of us will be experienced with that opening, as previously mentioned BUT there's also a small chance he'll be an expert in that opening. Also, it's easier for him, 1 man, to read up on an uncommon opening and come to a good consensus than for us, the many, to do the same. Therefore, I recommend we play cautiously and wait for him to make a mistake. We are many and he is few, we will spot his errors more easily than he ours, and we will make errors less often than he will due to our discussions.

+ Show Spoiler + I think NF3 is too off-the-wall, which is bad for reasons described in my original spoiler.

a simple, familiar opening would probably be best. Vote for e4.

+ Show Spoiler + TBH, I don't think it makes a big difference either way. I think we should play the move that we're most familiar with as a team and everyone voting for their favourite first move is a pretty good way to achieve that. NG5: What's the rule on changing our move? Can I change my vote, any time I want?

I think the way to change the vote is to make a new post explicitly stating that you've changed it, as opposed to editing an existing post. This is what NG5 said in the op: On July 24 2011 08:37 Ng5 wrote:I will keep a spreadsheet of all the players and their votes, so you don't need to edit your old posts if you change your votes, you can just make a new post and state you changed your opinion.

1. e4 I think that anything else really alienates some people as they might only do e4 openings

(sorry, TL mafia instincts kicking in) + Show Spoiler + I agree with Blazinghand, better to go with a comfortable play that a lot of us are familiar with

Best to start off standard.

+ Show Spoiler + It tends to lead to more dynamic games, which should be good fun for everyone, as opposed to some other openings that may produce closed and technical positions.

+ Show Spoiler + Same reason as everyone else. I'm not a huge chess expert so I feel like a simple opening is going to be more interesting to me.

+ Show Spoiler + I just have to agree with Blazinghand, the simplier, the better it is.

+ Show Spoiler + if we do anything too weird as an opening than some people might not be able to participate later on and we should try to include as many people as possible
