Uhh quake 2 doesnt have air accel.. QuakeWorld and CPMA are the classic games with air control/acceleration. Notice how the trickjumps in your links are mostly straight forward jumping with limited turning? Yeah, that because you cant change direction in air in that engine.
For comparison, trick jumping with actual air acceleration is like this:

I'm interested to read a comparison between the two games. Jumping seems quite different.

No wall jump ? No power sliding ?

Aq2 jumping revolve mainly around 2 mechanics.

- Strafe jumping to get higher speed which means you can fly farther.
- "Crate jumping" / Double jumping. Double jumping at crates and ledges make you jump a lot higher. These jumps require no extra speed so you can abuse them all the time.

In addition, you got the ability to drag your mouse sideways right before jumping in order to increase speed/jump velocity.

It's what makes the Q2 engine so awesome and special. Q3 is similar, but not as awesome. The Action Quake remake for Q3 (Reaction?) was not as good because the movement physics didn't feel 100% right.

Combine these mechanics with awesome maps, and you got a really dynamic and unique game with a high skill ceiling. As I said in an earlier post, it really makes the game more three-dimensional. You have to pay attention to the whole map, people can be almost anywhere.
To be honest its hardly special - the strafe jumping mechanic is commonplace in fast paced shooters and is hardly a skill ceiling increaser. Quite the opposite in fact - Due to no air control in that sort of physics engine, movement along maps is quite hindered and complex acribatics limited to straight line movement.
Aah thats the stuff..

I'm not debating which game had more complex acceleration techniques at all, but why would you say that q2 doesn't have air acceleration when you can clearly accelerate your movement speed directly through strafe jumping? While the execution wasn't the hardest did require some in addition very good timing to make a lot of jumps.

If you thought i meant it died with q2 I understand where you are coming from. I meant it died when pretty much every game post q3 has gone out of their way to kill bhop and every other interesting technique on the basis that not everyone could do it.

You can add the (tiny) sideways acceleration component to the (huge) forward movement so while you are gaining speed, the direction of movement stays virtually the same, meaning it is acceleration only in the meaning of change of speed(tangential acceleration), not in the meaning of change of direction(radial acceleration) like is the case with quakeworld and cpma. Hence ironically, the more "casual oriented" games like half life, counter strike, counter strike source, tf 2 whose physics engine is from quakeworld, have more air acceleration than the hardcore oriented quake 2/3 do.

Wow, I didn't know there were so many AQ2 players on TL.

I remember, maybe 10 years ago, 25 people on a public server all floating around in the river on deepcanyon trying to slash each other's faces. Or getting glitched and stuck in the secret door on kumanru with my clanmate with shotguns, and shooting any noobs that walk by.

Clan matches, sniping, jumping, handcannon slippers, CTB/F, getting owned on the Finnish servers. Playing it is the best multiplayer experience I've ever had.

Jumping itself was really fun. Ramp, ladder, strafe, circle, and double jumping, and any combination of them with proper timing in one trick to reach a previously inaccessible area on the map, or to reach the opponent and overwhelm him with shock and awe.
I'm not as thunk as dreople pink I am.

My first foray into online gaming was with AQ2 and I've never enjoyed playing a game so much before or since.

Yeah I played it for 10 years. Ended my gaming career with the swedish clan jÄgarna who swept pretty much every online tournament in Europe before the scene seemed to die a few years back. I also contributed to aq2world as an editor, and was the creator of the double elimination cup (mainly scandinavian clans played it as there where only 2 clans world wide who could touch us scandinavians, 1 from Germany 1 from Netherlands).

So been a long serving member of that community!

Best game ever created

Oh and R1CH i think created the anti cheat or something for it some time back. So I know he has some ties to the community.

Oh, and hi Saafen & I remember the nick Xantir from years and years back.

You can't have played it at a very high level if you think the strafe jumping hindered the skill ceiling. Just the strategic movement of the fast paced jumping at the "Lights...camera..action" to position yourself would be a huge difference in the skill teams showed on maps. Being able to get fast pace quicker, know get away routes when you had to bandage or reload your sniper was not an easy feat. The players who had fantastic strafe jumps, quick minds and good aim where the kings of the AQ2 world.

On the other hand you had clans that ruled the scene based around the movement of inbalanced speed jump maps (Mesto). They practiced it to death and won every clan match because they could out maneuver everyone on it. It was simply impossible to catch them.

I agree with you, dont misunderstand me, and i am sorry for having derailed this. The point was insteas that stafe jumping mechanics are hallmark in fast paced games, its standard. Hence, using that as an argument to imply outstanding acrobatic elements of the game is incorrect, as its not outstanding but standard. Instead, it is the games with air control(aka bunnyhopping in its classical definition, though that definition has been murdered by the swaths of strafejumping-game players calling their movement style bunny hopping) that are outstanding in the acrobatic regard, as that is what gives so much more possibilities. It is like taking of the training wheels off a bicycle to turn it into a full on BMX bike. Games like QW, CPMA, Warsow is what i mean.
The difference is well presented here:

Have you tried action half-life 2 yet? Seems decent enough but doesn't have too many players. It runs at steam on source engine. You can get it from here: http://ministryofaction.net/wp/

Just installed to mess around in, there is almost no one playing though

Pretty much my favourite online shooter ever.. its very hard to try play slow as molasses games like Counter Strike, Call of duty, etc. after playing this one..

Its also one of the only games to marry modern day weapons and fast paced movements into one game. I'd play quake live or one of these more modern versions like warsow/red eclipse etc but I hate weapons like grenades or rocket launchers.. they force the maps to be complete dungeons and corridors.. so boring.

Little late on this, but I was looking around for some Action Quake 2 stuff and I stumbled upon this. BUT you can get the mod files here..

http://tastyspleen.net/quake/downloads/mods/action_quake/

Also if you don't have quake 2 at all anymore you can download this: http://tastyspleen.tv/?page_id=744 its a completely legal download of quake 2, enough to get you playing online. Only thing it doesn't contain is a full pak0.pak so you can't play the single player. It's aprq2 one of the more popular clients, and its got anti-cheat right in the file. can also install r1q2 right in this folder which is another good client to play quake with, my personal favorite.

There are still quite a few USA players that would love to give AQ2 a quick kick start back over here. Far chance, I know. If you wanna see what tastyspleen people are up to as far as aq2, alot of us are on IRC. We are on the globalgamers server in #tastycast. we even have weekly quake2 1v1 'tourneys' every friday night. not aq2, but cant pass up some good ole fun quake 2 ;p

Also ive heard word of someone in the community bringing aq2world back up and the map depot.

Hello ex aq2 fellows.

We're about to put up national clan-ladder. Site-codeing is still in progress but we would like to knw, if we have enough clans to continue it.

I would like to see some oldschool clans joining it or some old players putting up some clans for it.

There are many fancy aq2 installers avaible. If you would like to know some more, just post here or connect me in quakenet. Komentaja is my nick. You'll find me at #clanstn

Let's not let this game die.

Installer: http://nne.fi/aq2/aq2installv2.exe
Maps: http://www.lahtela.com/aq2suomi/maps/ 1by1 here or, http://hifi.iki.fi/quake2/action/install/mega_mappack_v1.zip full map pack from there.

Like the above poster stated, Let's not let this game die.

So we've re-created http://aq2world.com so it's now the global hub of all Action Quake 2. We've already started a League, there's active development within the mod and with the Q2Pro client, mapping and accessorizing is continuing and we're looking to the future with more developments. Player and server counts have increased significantly in the past few months.

We'd like to invite every ex-AQ2 player and every new player to the series to come to the site, chat with us at #aq2world on quakenet and play in our servers We have weekly events to get more people involved, learn new game modes (CTF, Espionage, etc.)

Come help us rebuild one of the best games ever!
