Hey guys anyone here used to play AQ2? After reminiscing about aq2 with a friend I setup a server:
206.51.232.120:27910
Come play!

Don't have AQ2 anymore? PM me!

AQ2 was one of the first multiplayer games I seriously got into. It was such a sick game. Used to be able to all the trick jumps and destroy people with the HC. Real FPS games died with air accel

Yes!

This the game I grew up playing. Used to play with the ID xantir if anyone remember.

Best game ever, nothing will ever become like it. It's so three dimensional compared to Counter-Strike. You have people moving all over the place. I still have it installed on my PC and play it every once in a while.

only played regular q2, but i can relate. new FPS's just don't have the dynamics & skill requirements with all the realism and movement restrictions. God I'd love it if ID software just gave us a remake of q1 or q2 movement wise and weapon wise with new graphics, just to get the community rolling...

but hey, at least I was kind of happy to see r1ch administrating TL, my last 2 or so years of q2 were played on r1q2

My fav fps by far. Played this to hell when I was around 13 ^^ 25 now.

Used to play this game on a broken ISDN with 170 ping on avarage so I only used the sniper and throwing knives and had to smart aim ahead of targets. Still managed to be one of the best players in my ( albeit small ) country.

One of my first games online, best game ever! Had so much fun, and still playing it from time to time. ;}

Is the community alive in canada/us? AQ2 is still alive in Europe with some servers and ClanWars running. Not big tho :<

I tried to play aq2, but it's kinda hard for new players if you try nowdays where there's only oldbies...
I've played plenty of QW Team Fortress on the old days and a lot of Urban Terror today, but trying aq2 gets me confused... dark maps, don't know what weapons to pick or how to pick, don't know where to go, this kind of things... but I surely understand why people like it... it's almost like trying to play deathmatch quake 1

Called myself Xspyder when playing it, hi Saafen and xantir i remember you :D

I only played the q3 mod version of urban terror, but q2's physics always felt much much better.

q2's strafe-jumping is pretty similar to q3's
urban terror and aq2 also have a similar theme and are both fast-paced, aq2 being more

Aq2 jumping revolve mainly around 2 mechanics.

- Strafe jumping to get higher speed which means you can fly farther.
- "Crate jumping" / Double jumping. Double jumping at crates and ledges make you jump a lot higher. These jumps require no extra speed so you can abuse them all the time.

In addition, you got the ability to drag your mouse sideways right before jumping in order to increase speed/jump velocity.

It's what makes the Q2 engine so awesome and special. Q3 is similar, but not as awesome. The Action Quake remake for Q3 (Reaction?) was not as good because the movement physics didn't feel 100% right.

Combine these mechanics with awesome maps, and you got a really dynamic and unique game with a high skill ceiling. As I said in an earlier post, it really makes the game more three-dimensional. You have to pay attention to the whole map, people can be almost anywhere.

Honestly I have no idea where you can download the game atm. You used to be able to download from kweik.com but it looks like it's down. And www.aq2world.com seems down aswell. If you really really want the game I suppose I could upload the 200ish mb setup file from the old kweik.com to a filefront link but it will take some time since my net is nothing special . The game has been 'dying' for so many years now, but there's still people playing on the finnish pelitutka servers, and some clans still seach for clanwars. Looking at http://www.z0r.nl/index.v3.php?link=stats&search=1 there's still people who are somewhat active (funny how I recognize pretty much every name on that list since no one new ever comes to this game and actually stays with it)

What really killed the game for me was the fact that there was never a GOOD working anticheat, and some of the players who had been in the community forever got randomly busted. Every time we played some of the suspecious clans they would refuse to play on the norwegian server because of the anticheat requirement and apparantly it 'lagged' the game on finlands computers O_O

EDIT: forgot serverlist - http://www.quakeservers.net/quake2/servers/t=aq2/so=8/

Uhh quake 2 doesnt have air accel.. QuakeWorld and CPMA are the classic games with air control/acceleration. Notice how the trickjumps in your links are mostly straight forward jumping with limited turning? Yeah, that because you cant change direction in air in that engine.
For comparison, trick jumping with actual air acceleration is like this:

To be honest its hardly special - the strafe jumping mechanic is commonplace in fast paced shooters and is hardly a skill ceiling increaser. Quite the opposite in fact - Due to no air control in that sort of physics engine, movement along maps is quite hindered and complex acribatics limited to straight line movement.

I'm not debating which game had more complex acceleration techniques at all, but why would you say that q2 doesn't have air acceleration when you can clearly accelerate your movement speed directly through strafe jumping? While the execution wasn't the hardest did require some in addition very good timing to make a lot of jumps.

If you thought i meant it died with q2 I understand where you are coming from. I meant it died when pretty much every game post q3 has gone out of their way to kill bhop and every other interesting technique on the basis that not everyone could do it.

You can add the (tiny) sideways acceleration component to the (huge) forward movement so while you are gaining speed, the direction of movement stays virtually the same, meaning it is acceleration only in the meaning of change of speed(tangential acceleration), not in the meaning of change of direction(radial acceleration) like is the case with quakeworld and cpma. Hence ironically, the more "casual oriented" games like half life, counter strike, counter strike source, tf 2 whose physics engine is from quakeworld, have more air acceleration than the hardcore oriented quake 2/3 do.

Wow, I didn't know there were so many AQ2 players on TL.

I remember, maybe 10 years ago, 25 people on a public server all floating around in the river on deepcanyon trying to slash each other's faces. Or getting glitched and stuck in the secret door on kumanru with my clanmate with shotguns, and shooting any noobs that walk by.

Clan matches, sniping, jumping, handcannon slippers, CTB/F, getting owned on the Finnish servers. Playing it is the best multiplayer experience I've ever had.

Jumping itself was really fun. Ramp, ladder, strafe, circle, and double jumping, and any combination of them with proper timing in one trick to reach a previously inaccessible area on the map, or to reach the opponent and overwhelm him with shock and awe.
I'm not as thunk as dreople pink I am.

Yeah I played it for 10 years. Ended my gaming career with the swedish clan jÄgarna who swept pretty much every online tournament in Europe before the scene seemed to die a few years back. I also contributed to aq2world as an editor, and was the creator of the double elimination cup (mainly scandinavian clans played it as there where only 2 clans world wide who could touch us scandinavians, 1 from Germany 1 from Netherlands).

So been a long serving member of that community!

Best game ever created

Oh and R1CH i think created the anti cheat or something for it some time back. So I know he has some ties to the community.

Oh, and hi Saafen & I remember the nick Xantir from years and years back.

You can't have played it at a very high level if you think the strafe jumping hindered the skill ceiling. Just the strategic movement of the fast paced jumping at the "Lights...camera..action" to position yourself would be a huge difference in the skill teams showed on maps. Being able to get fast pace quicker, know get away routes when you had to bandage or reload your sniper was not an easy feat. The players who had fantastic strafe jumps, quick minds and good aim where the kings of the AQ2 world.

On the other hand you had clans that ruled the scene based around the movement of inbalanced speed jump maps (Mesto). They practiced it to death and won every clan match because they could out maneuver everyone on it. It was simply impossible to catch them.

I agree with you, dont misunderstand me, and i am sorry for having derailed this. The point was insteas that stafe jumping mechanics are hallmark in fast paced games, its standard. Hence, using that as an argument to imply outstanding acrobatic elements of the game is incorrect, as its not outstanding but standard. Instead, it is the games with air control(aka bunnyhopping in its classical definition, though that definition has been murdered by the swaths of strafejumping-game players calling their movement style bunny hopping) that are outstanding in the acrobatic regard, as that is what gives so much more possibilities. It is like taking of the training wheels off a bicycle to turn it into a full on BMX bike. Games like QW, CPMA, Warsow is what i mean.
The difference is well presented here:

Pretty much my favourite online shooter ever.. its very hard to try play slow as molasses games like Counter Strike, Call of duty, etc. after playing this one..

Its also one of the only games to marry modern day weapons and fast paced movements into one game. I'd play quake live or one of these more modern versions like warsow/red eclipse etc but I hate weapons like grenades or rocket launchers.. they force the maps to be complete dungeons and corridors.. so boring.

Little late on this, but I was looking around for some Action Quake 2 stuff and I stumbled upon this. BUT you can get the mod files here..

http://tastyspleen.net/quake/downloads/mods/action_quake/

Also if you don't have quake 2 at all anymore you can download this: http://tastyspleen.tv/?page_id=744 its a completely legal download of quake 2, enough to get you playing online. Only thing it doesn't contain is a full pak0.pak so you can't play the single player. It's aprq2 one of the more popular clients, and its got anti-cheat right in the file. can also install r1q2 right in this folder which is another good client to play quake with, my personal favorite.

There are still quite a few USA players that would love to give AQ2 a quick kick start back over here. Far chance, I know. If you wanna see what tastyspleen people are up to as far as aq2, alot of us are on IRC. We are on the globalgamers server in #tastycast. we even have weekly quake2 1v1 'tourneys' every friday night. not aq2, but cant pass up some good ole fun quake 2 ;p

Also ive heard word of someone in the community bringing aq2world back up and the map depot.

Hello ex aq2 fellows.

We're about to put up national clan-ladder. Site-codeing is still in progress but we would like to knw, if we have enough clans to continue it.

I would like to see some oldschool clans joining it or some old players putting up some clans for it.

There are many fancy aq2 installers avaible. If you would like to know some more, just post here or connect me in quakenet. Komentaja is my nick. You'll find me at #clanstn

Let's not let this game die.

Installer: http://nne.fi/aq2/aq2installv2.exe
Maps: http://www.lahtela.com/aq2suomi/maps/ 1by1 here or, http://hifi.iki.fi/quake2/action/install/mega_mappack_v1.zip full map pack from there.

Like the above poster stated, Let's not let this game die.

So we've re-created http://aq2world.com so it's now the global hub of all Action Quake 2. We've already started a League, there's active development within the mod and with the Q2Pro client, mapping and accessorizing is continuing and we're looking to the future with more developments. Player and server counts have increased significantly in the past few months.

We'd like to invite every ex-AQ2 player and every new player to the series to come to the site, chat with us at #aq2world on quakenet and play in our servers We have weekly events to get more people involved, learn new game modes (CTF, Espionage, etc.)

Come help us rebuild one of the best games ever!

We used to play this game in our High School after class LANs. Its why I never played counter strike, this was simply more fun. I recommend it to people that like FPS games, I've sadly lost my liking of the genre.

I played it a bit, but it was never one of the mods I was really into. I played more KotS, Vortex and Gloom.

yes, the best game ever made. The first multiplayer fps. I played this game for 10 years. I'd still be playing it if ppl hadn't moved onto other games, and if the servers still stayed full. I can remember back in late 98', and 99', there must have been over 100 action quake 2 servers rolling; and all of them just about had ppl on them no matter what time of the day it was. What you been up to mrhobbers =o ?

Hands down the best game ever. I was HERE GOES $nake.

A pretty sick movie to watch is
. You can see sick frags + jumps as well.

I still have some old trick jumping vids on my external HD, but I really can't be bothered finding it and uploading them to the net.

I ended up stopping because the servers were just dying down, and fewer and fewer people played. It's sad because the younger generation of kids will never in my opinion experience gaming like this.

Another mod for q2 that I played a heap was Q2Jump, if anyone remembers it :D

I know that I'm very late to this thread, but I'm also an AQ2 enthusiast.

For those that are interested, I took out a couple of sounds from the game that we will all recognize, I use one as my text tone and one as my ringtone, you can check them here:

This thread deserves a bump. I remember playing this as my first multiplayer game. First at LANs with friends then at the internet. Used to go by the name RocKer and XeroX and were part of some prominent norwegian clans like Darkside and founder of assassins

Ah the nostalgia...

Downloaded the game last week, and its still hands down the best engine around still. If it got some player model refurbish with a similar engine it would become a new hit

Actually the scene is quite okay still, atleast in Scandinavia. A small group of people are still making new content to it every now and then. It's pretty simple game to start (not maybe easy to own, but simple to start.) There's almost 24/7 players playing in public and loads of clanwars and even tournaments and cups going on. You should definately give it a shot.

Easiest way to install and play aq2 nowdays -> http://q2online.net/action
Some info about the game -> aq2world.com/
If your oldschool and want to modify your game you should check -> http://marlporo.pp.fi/aq2/

We are also planning new stuff to NA scene, so stay tuned.

Any questions? Feel free to join #aq2world @quakenet.org

I just happened to think about Aq2 today and looked to see if any servers exist any more. Still easily one of the most entertaining games (and my favorite) I have ever played. I think some of it had to do with the time at which it came out...certainly was a different atmosphere back then.

Since this thread got bumbed i mind as well mention that Masa^ made a youtube channel for old action quake 2 matches. Its quite new and gets updated pretty regulary. I believe that hes also looking for more demo files from the past so if any of you guys still have your old aq2 clanwar records he would probably want to check them out.

I love aq2. we had 3 staple lan games back in the day - starcraft, quake and aq2. Never got into CS because it was just so slow compared to this beauty.
