Well actually they can't sue gameloft from having "similar" characters as starcraft characters as the starcraft characters themeselves are ripoffs from starship troopers and other fiction work.

Also blizzard has boycotted every single initiative to bring broodwar to mobile devices such as the ds and mobile phones, so basically its their fault.

I'm actually buying this game, it looks entertaining

iirc starcraft was the first rts game with completely different factions. and diablos with the point and click control. not to mention bnet which is a free server where ppl can play games back then. thats to my knowledge though so feel free to correct me xD

Last I checked, Gameloft announced they sold over 20 million App store games total. If that's not real and competitive, I don't know what is. And that was a couple months back, that number has surely increased since then.


Also, I personally think it's borderline unethical to cash in on the popularity and success of another's idea and work like they do. There's being inspired by something and adapting it into something new, and then there's blatant copying constantly skirting on the edge of a copyright infringement lawsuit.

I'm feeling the same about knockoffs in certain other industries, like the aforementioned Asylum mockbusters.

And just to note, I think the only time a company has actually been successfully sued for infringement in a matter of "ripping off another video game" was Atari's case against Pac-Man clone K.C. Munchkin (Atari held the home rights to the game). Since then, you've had International Karate, you've had Fighter's History, and an entire world of video games that basically ripped off each other in some way or another. The only time that companies have really won any infringement cases is when they've held patents on various video game devices, most notably Sega's legal victory against The Simpsons: Road Rage for the use of an overhead arrow to lead the player (ala Crazy Taxi). (Yes, they were allowed to patent this.)

I think all those things are true, but what i meant was the concept of hero vs demons (diablo), man vs alien vs "predator" (sc) and man vs orc. What i get a sense of from the video is that they're really just doing what bliz used to do, but bliz just didn't get stuff from the same genre of game (a luxury from the early computer days). How it actually plays and how u control units and stuff like finding people to play against might not be very bliz-like, but I dont know, haven't played it.

Depending on the price, I'm probably going to get it just to check out the interface and how the controls work. I bet macro is very difficult and micro is all but impossible.

This isn't a competitive product because Blizzard isn't in the business of making iPhone games. Honestly you could make a more legitimate argument about blatant rip-offs in the Fighting Game genre or the MMORPG genre since those are clearly designed to directly compete with each other on the same platform. It may certainly be unethical, but it's a common practice that anyone who enters this kind of business comes to expect. Just like companies like IKEA basically rip off designs and makes cheaper copies of designer furniture, these guys just make cheap knockoffs of popular games. If you seriously think an iPhone game like this is going to take away sales from Starcraft or any other game that they've copied, you're just kidding yourself.

Yeah, absolutely. You could definitely make arguments for these, although I'm not aware of too many recent games where things have been as obviously stolen/copied as Gameloft usually does.

Move over SC2, there's a new heavy hitter in town.

Knock offs are nothing new and they all suck. Usually provided for a niche market as I can't imagine the market for that title being very big at all. If you're into that type of game then you're probably playing SC2 or some other superior game on a PC like a proper gamer.

Haha, gameloft makes me laugh. If you take the time to go through all of their games, you will see that their games are actually almost 100% rip offs of big time games. They have a game just like WC3 as well.

EDIT: My god, watching the video, these players have terrible macro.

I suppose the only disagreement we may have is on the use of the word, "despicable". To me, reverse engineering or copying a product is far from it. Despicable to me would probably be more like the exploitation of sweatshop labor by clothing companies or deliberately disposing of toxic waste in an improper manner. Knockoffs like this really just amuse me more than anything else just like the fake LV and Coach bags you find in Chinatown for a few bucks.

I'll check it out. Even though Gameloft has an uncanny ability to make TOTAL CLONES... Even I'd admit, they are generally decent games. I've tried several RTS style games on the iPHONE, and this one actually looks like it might be the best in terms of mechanics.

I have been working for Gameloft for some years. Before they start making a game they make a research which computer, web or mobile game is widely played. After the winner is chosen they start copying it almost completely. The ppl creating the game are actually required to play the original game in order to copy it more accurate (in this case it is starcraft). The funny thing is that most of these ppl are not even remotely gamers so the decisions they make about the game such as controls, user interface etc are just retarded. When the game is 95% done the lawyers are involved and the dont-sue-us process of changing the game begins.
BUT nothing can compare to the "world of lordcraft" :D.

I don't think it looks at all like Starcraft 2; to say that Gameloft is trying to copy Starcraft just degrades the quality of SC2.

Its just a game thats been done before. Also i dont understand people saying that it looks like crap, since its on the iphone, I think it looks alright. And don't judge it without even playing it.

Yeah I think its very SC2 like from the vid, probably a copy.
