So there's this new indie action RPG game called Bastion which has been getting a lot of attention and it looks pretty good
It seems to play like your typical action RPG in a 2D isometric style where you play as "The Kid" but the really cool thing is how there is a badass narrator that says everything that is going on as you do it on the go
For example it would go something like "Kid pops him good" after killing an enemy
Trailer - it doesn't give a way a whole lot
Here's some gameplay to show you what I mean about the narrating
Ya, I saw this a few days ago before it was going to PAX. Love the style and commentary on what you are doing. I'd imagine it will be on Steam, which I will have to check it out then.
I played this game on 360. I thought it was fun! Nice music, story, graphics and combat. It can be very challenging if you want it to be (you can't set the difficulty level before you start, but there is a system built in to the game that let's you buff the enemies. turning on all the buffs makes it hard!). There are some fun side challenges but if you upgrade your weapons then you trivialize most of them, so I suggest trying to do them with minimal upgrades.

Bastion is being released on steam tomorrow for 14 euro. Don't know if I will buy it at release or wait for steamsale when its 25-75% off. But I'm definitely going to buy it this year.
There is a ton of content in the game, I replayed it twice so far and for the Steam release I'm getting it again. Its just so much fun, and great value for a 15dollar downloadable.

I played this on 360 as well, it was a great game. What stood out to me the most was definitely the music, all the songs had a lot of thought clearly put into them and they were very well done. I actually ended up buying the soundtrack, http://supergiantgames.bandcamp.com/ if anyone else is interested.

Yep, the soundtrack was so good. The game overall really resonated well with me. I ended up buying the soundtrack as well keke.

Yeah i buyed it after yahtzee recommended it, and its really awesome. The combat and upgrading mechanics are fun and the music was reeeeally good, but what made the whole game for me was the narrator, never saw anything like that before.
Definitely looks like a cool game. Saw it on one of the Steam headliners a few weeks ago. The narration and mechanics of the game are awesome, no doubt, but I think that what really makes this game unique is the backdrop. All of the graphics are hand painted, giving them that unique look. Pretty cool feature to say the least.
A great game. I played it on 360 as well. The idol system used to buff the enemies turns what can be kind of a cakewalk into quite a challenge. Definitely recommended for anyone looking for any sort of challenge.
On August 16 2011 04:19 Corvi wrote: how long is it?
10-12 hours I think for 1st playthrough.
I really liked this game. my only real complaint is that since I didnt have on subtitles I would miss a lot of what the narrator was saying because i was too focused on the action lol.
On August 16 2011 06:11 PassiveAce wrote: What is the combat system like in this game? It looks really interesting but I'm worried the gameplay wont keep me engaged, what do you guys think?
the gameplay is definitely more involving and entertaining than any other action RPG i've played. there's definitely enough depth to the combat to keep you satisfied with at least 1 playthrough.

Thanks for the input, I was just worried the combat would be bland hack and slash but I take it that there is some rhyme and reason. Everything about this game sounds like its worth $15

is there multiplayer or anything beyond single player story that will keep me playing it after the first walk through. or is it 15 dollars for 12 hours of entertainment. (i won't play solo twice)

there are combat arenas with leaderboards but I'm not sure how well that works (played with xbox offline the whole time).
Zero Punctuation is a famously negative game reviewer, and he was overall positive about it,which means it's going to be awesome. Watch for a good review of it, if somewhat harsh.
I'm waiting for the PC version, so can't comment yet, but I'm quite excited.

Sweet! thanks, i love zero punctuation, Bastion comes out on the PC tomorow, and From Dust the 17th. Both were delayed almost a month with the XBLA versions out before the pc versions, lets just hope they optimized it for the pc versions!

From what I recall from talking to the creative director, he said that Bastion on PC runs Nativly on 1080p and they remapped all the controls specifically for PC.

Thank the lord! i cant stand it when companies screw with us PC gamers, gunna be a great game, thanks.
I enjoyed bastion, my first play was around 6 hours I didn't rush through. There are mini games for each weapon, it's like a training ground. There is about 10 weapons everything from sword to spear to cannnons and guns. You can customize your weapons a few ways. My second play through was around 2.5 hrs( you don lose your items and upgrades if you start a "newgame+". The bosses can be rather easy but I didn't fool around with the idols too much, they make The game harder. There is no multiplayer not sure what guy above means by combat arenas.
I'd give it a 7.5/10
Edit: I left out he best part, the music on here is very well put together. You will find yourself singing them in your head. xD

It was impossible to find when I was looking, Microsoft had stopped selling them. The wired works out the box though. Amazon sells official controllers very cheap. Retail is almost double price.
Too bad pre-order doesn't give any bonus. I would've definitely bought it for sure. Now I'm going to wait until there's a discount...yes I'm cheap ): but I'm poor as well. The game sure looks fun though.

No, that's a friend of one of the devs, first time voicing. It's actually like a 5 man team, giantbomb.com had a series of making of videos about the game for months before it's release, fascinating stuff. You meet the narrator too, he seems like a really cool dude.
I just got a code for the PC version, if anyone is still not sure about getting it on PC I will post a blog on the site I work for in the next couple of days looking at the Console and PC versions as well as explaining why I love Bastion so much.

I'm a video game editor so.. I got it from the publishers.
Bought the game as well today, and it's just AMAZING. Most fun I've had in an original game since Braid and Portal. So far my personal game of the year (although HoMM VI and Deus Ex (among others) might soon compete).
Haven't completed it yet, but I hope it has some mad replayability.
They won't let me buy their game, and they even bother telling me why. No games ever had the issue release in southamerica. Spent hours looking for official words, but nothing.

I have the same problem with SSF4 AE :/, really sucks.
I am currently playing (no issues or codes involved) and my first impression is that the music is fucking sick. Combat seems fun, the way they tell the story is great and there is some stuff to do besides hacking and slashing. I wonder how long the game actually is though.

Its around 8-12 hours depending on how fast you go by, and there are lots of end game content and a New game +.

Why don't you just buy it? Only €14,-
because he's entitled to all games for free
anyways i bought the game, computer can't run it though (._.) soo i have to wait until my new computer comes in in a few weeks :D. Looks really really good for what they're giving imo
This is one of those games where in the first 5 seconds you think "This is going to be a blast."
Amazing artwork, some of the best I've seen since Baten Kaitos. There's just something about this style of artwork which just takes my breath away so much more than conventional games. Really says something about what makes games good.
Does anyone have experience playing the PC version and can tell me how good the PC port is? I prefer playing games on the PC if possible, but if this game ended up with a bad PC port I might get it on the XBox instead.
I bought the game today and played it for an hour or two...i love it so far. I only played so little of it because i want to finally finish darksiders ^_^
It's a pretty cool game, I'm not the biggest fan of the narrators voice, but it's still cool how he narrates your story actively as you play through the game. I'm hoping for DLC for new weapons, zones and expansions. Completed the starter zones and 4 others, in addition to the first two weapon challenges (only unlocked the lowest tier item so far).
Just finished it up for the first playthrough, pretty amazing game, I love love love the art style, and the combat was the best of the mash-em-up style I've ever played, not that that's saying much.
Story is well worth it too, impressed with the writing.

Omg this is the only game i can think of that I would buy DLC for the instant it came out. I've NEVER bought separate DLC before, ever. ie only when they come out with a cheap bundle on steam for the entire game + DLC.

lol same here, Effing loving this game, but man, some parts, are just ridiculous, the trials, or challenges or w/e you call them, are just outright annoying and frustrating. I have been getting 2nd place in all of them, but getting 1st place is just not worth the time IMO. Not to mention that stupid part with the reflections, wave after wave of enemies is fine, but you just keep falling through holes in the level that enemies create, and its very annoying. After about 3 hrs of playing the game, id say its an 8/10 for me, great aesthetic, story, and gameplay, but there are REALLY frustrating areas in the game that just piss me off, and that's why i'm here now, need a break, before I break something.
This game is really, really good. Once you get used to counter-blocking and find a combo you like you start flying through the levels a little too easily, but holy crap is this a polished game. Worth 15 dollars easily.
Apart from Borderlands GOTY, this is the best $15 I've ever spent. One of my favorite aracde games for sure, amazing art style, gameplay was awesome, and awesome writing. This is tied with Deathspank for my favorite Arcade game so far

some of the weapon challenges are hard (especially the machete one since some squirts just basically run off the map -_-) but i've found most of them to be pretty fun and not TOO hard. a good tip I found was to just level up the weapon for the challenge beforehand, it almost breaks the challenge in some cases and makes it way too easy (for instance the carbine challenge is stupidly easy once you have faster aiming speed upgraded).
i actually really like the mechanic of falling and some enemies being able to make holes in the levels. it really makes the game feel different from others. it just adds another layer of depth (need to kill those big guys with hammers before they destroy the entire level). although during the reflections I hated how some turrets that spawned will make a hole and there's nothing you can do about it.
I also love how balanced the weapons seem to be. based on everyone I've talked to about the game, everyone seems to have their own favorite weapon combo that is different. I thought my favorite combo was going to be bow + machete, but in the end I was just loving spear + carbine (with special weapon thing being the carbine exploding shot). I never really touched the hammer/flamethrower/rocket launcher though. in my 2nd playthrough I want to mess around with all the weapons more. The only problem is that by the time a lot of them are upgraded, they overlap with each other a lot (for instance the carbine can be upgraded to have splash damage, making it a lot like the shotgun, which can also be upgraded to have much longer range).

The machete challenge is just about planning, not hitting things fast. Just run to the middle and kill the green sprites before they get away and then you run to the blue sprite spawners, then the towers.

This is the best way to do the trial by far . greens--> old-timey popcorn machines--> turrets with throw. I thought it was impossible until I realized they all spawned in the middle haha.

Yup. makes it totally easy.
Hardest one by far was the bullhead court, shit. Makes all the other ones look like cakewalks. I was so happy once I was finally able to finish without getting hit more than twice. The more awkward part about it is when you have to fight the advanced security, as you will swivel around to target another turret when you still need to block in the other direction. Gotta line them up right to do it.
So far, I'm 4/7 on those available, with the shield, fang repeater and the duel guns non-completed (all of them at level 2 though). Pretty sure I will never finish fang's one, too hard.
I like farming the dream sequence. I've been trying to complete it with the 4 tokens that I have active but it's been proving to be too hard so far (get around halfway but enemies drain half my life bar in a hit, especially the WW ones are annoying). I did it a few times normally though. Bought everything and upgraded everything that's available so far. Completed all the side quests so far (like doing 70 damage, etc) and all I have left for now is the 3 things mentioned up there + main quest.
I'm going to give the dream a few more tries; same thing with the shield/duels challenges... but not the freaking fang one.
The machete is really awesome. Removes the need for a long ranged weapon and hits really fast. I took double poison on it so if I face a tough enemy I can kite it and DoT it with throws. I usually use the musket as my second weapon, since it helps deal with everything else (IE knockback + crowds of enemies).

I've been using the bow and machete personally, with ghost strike. For the fang reaper challenge, upgrade ammo capacity and reload time then try it, When u get to the end of a run, shoot all the balloons before completing the turn, the next set of walkable space doesn't fall untill you turn the corner.I found the weapon challenges really easy actually, got 1st in all of them if u need some tips pm me.
Yeah exactly, the choice they gave there was like a really tough one, and there didn't really seem to be a right or wrong answer. Carrying him was one of my favorite moments in a game ever.

lol same here, Effing loving this game, but man, some parts, are just ridiculous, the trials, or challenges or w/e you call them, are just outright annoying and frustrating.
I like the way the trials are, it'd be kind of lame if they were easy right off the bat. But, if you can't complete them you can always get upgrades and tonics then come back. The repeater challenge, for example, is a lot easier with 2 repeater upgrades (recommend +50% dmg so you 1 shot targets and faster reload) than with 0 and the Bow challenge is almost trivial with the poisoned arrows. So if you can't do a challenge, leave it and come back when you have more weapon upgrades.
Also I'd pay some serious $ if someone could make a version of this game/DLC that had PvP arena combat or a DotA-like style combat. (I haven't dipped into the current multiplayer offering so I don't know what that's like yet).

This game is freaking beautiful, just got it on steam. The music is flat out amazing, but the kicker for me the the storyteller. The way the story is told as you play the game. and his voice. holy shit THAT VOICE
for the pistols and repeater challenges, go to the distillery and get the 100% crit at low health, then jump off the ledge over and over to lower your health before you start the challenge.
but i still recommend trying challenges with as few tricks and upgrades as possible. if it seems possible with your current setup, but it's just really really hard, well then enjoy the challenge! i spent like 30 mins each on the repeater and hammer challenges and it was really nice when i finally got them!

Nice trick, I used it to get the damage achievement thing with the hammer but I didn't think of doing that for the repeater and pistols.
Still, I don't understand how hammer took you so long. I've tried repeater a ton of times but hammer took me 3 or 4 tries to get it down. I guess you didn't upgrade it first?
the moment where I knew I was really playing something for the ages was the level where you find Zia. It was wonderful to realize I was dealing with a moment of aesthetic contemplation which played out on the level of protagonist (the kid) and player (me).
There are some narrative flaws, but they are easily overlooked in favor of the game's overwhelming positive elements.
I want to say this game is (one of the few) truly representative of video games as a medium capable of delivering meaningful narratives and providing worthwhile artistic expression while remaining a fundamentally interactive and "fun" experience.
The shield challenge was pretty fun, but only took a couple tries. All of the enemies have animations that tell you when you can get a counter off, so once you learn those they're easy.
If you want a real challenge, do the memory-missions with all the idols on, pretty damn hard. Can be pretty frustrating unfortunately, luck does play a part with all the idols on.
I'm currently considering training a speedrun of the game, might be fun. certainly has enough categories and a high enough skillcap for SDA to like it. I have to do some testing to see what tricks I can abuse, but I'd definitely stream it if people expressed interest.

yeah i must not have had good upgrades. i needed to do everything so perfectly. not one wasted swing and most things that could be killed by rolling i needed to kill with rolling since it was faster.
afaik, every single challenge except the shield becomes trivial with enough upgrades / distillery passives. and every challenge is pretty damn hard (some may be impossible) without any upgrades. so experiences will vary pretty widely. after i beat the shield challenge and got the memorial for beating 7 challenges, i had so much money that future challenges became trivial since i'd upgrade things right away. i think two in a row i got 1st on first try and the next one i got 1st on 2nd try.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. The music, the storytelling, the gameplay, the art, everything was just so well done. I played through it twice to get both endings. On the second playthrough, I noticed an extra special skill in the forge called "gel cannister". It was a great surprise. I won't spoil what it is though. I will say it made several parts much easier.
After you learn the story of the war, and how the Ura live underground while Caelandia live high atop walls in their city, go back and listen carefully to Zia's song in the level where you first find her; it means a lot more than I picked up on the first time around. There's some nice foreshadowing done in the dialog as well. Just a really well-written story.
The ending theme needs to be played at my funeral. That is all. I'm glad to have played such a game with everyone in this thread. My fav game of this year
Beat this the first day it came out. Not saying it is easy (those gods can make it damned impossible), but it was a fantastic game I just could not stop myself from playing.
game was so good, i cant believe it. hadnt had so much fun with a single player game since ... well, i dont even know. gameplay and sound (narrator and music = epic win) so good. i also like the diversity of weapons and special skills.
it's a 9/10 for me, not even counting the low prize in.
To anyone else blown away by the music, they just came out with the OST a few days ago - $10 or more for digital and $15 or more for a physical copy.
There are 22 tracks in all, although some are dialogue excerpts rather than proper songs. Well worth it imo.
I'd say my favorites were
The Bengali sounding strings rule :3
I loved the two individual songs (especially Zulf's theme) but superimposing one over the other and adding some sweet effects makes it sound even awesomer (and I'm a sucker for dem diminished 3rd harmonies :D)!!!!
WHAT THE HELL. I've been losing my mind trying to get first prize on Trapper Shingle, so I decide to look up YouTube. And then TIL controllers get AUTO AIM.
I am raging at the unfairness. PC gamers shafted again.
EDIT: Okay, hold defend and it auto aims. What a waste of an hour.
LOL a lot of challenges become trivial with the auto-aim...
Like the squirt challenge, run up to the center and kill all the green ones, then finish off the green ones you couldn't get with shift :\ I was trying to beat that without auto-aim and it was pretty ridiculous

It seems most of us are sharing the same opinion. I had a few friends get it, nothing but praise and wowing.
Played through on newgame+ and I can't help but notice the story hinting at kid being stuck in a endless time loop. "You should remember this part"(When you find Zia in prosper bluff) Perhaps the kid went on a adventure in the past and found Zia. Zulf was maybe related to Zia and this pissed him off and started the war between the Ura? Rucks hints the war was decades ago. Maybe I'm crazy Is Rucks possibly Kid in the future? I also noticed the Crystal Barrette you find in lost and found resembles what is in Zia's hair. You can't talk to her about it, only Rucks and Zulf. Rucks talks about losing a loved one in the calamity. This further hints at what I was saying about Rucks being the kid in the past. Amazing story either way I'm in love. That said is there a actual lore posted somewhere by the devs?
I wish I had a book of art of Caelondia before the cataclysm - drawings of the breakers, brushers, marshals, etc. There's so much lore that you don't get to see, and while I realize it obviously wouldn't fit in the game, I really want to see it
First off I just want to say this game is amazing and deserves all the praise it gets and more. It's a true work of art.

As for this comment, please don't let DLC touch this game with a 10 ft pole. DLC is evil.
What this game actually deserves and hopefully will get considering how widely embraced it has become is a full retail release with all the bells and whistles, game length rivaling retail release RPG's, the story more flushed out (It may be difficult to get one person to narrate the whole thing, but you could always get different people for different parts of the game, like they are all telling their part of the story and it forms a whole). As well as some cool new abilities, weapons and some more unique gameplay elements here and there.
^ That of course is all a dream, but it could happen. I haven't been impressed with most of the games I've played lately and even the ones I have (Witcher 2, for one) this game has surpassed in just flat out fun factor.

I feel stupid now. I beat all the challenges without auto-aim. Might be why I had trouble.
Best one : I took 3 hits on the shield one and still got 1st prize Because I took my last hit on the last enemy and he did at the same time. I was pretty relieved, didn't like that challenge.
I hate the world in the cooking pot. Seriously, reflection 5 where you need to kill 2 of those underground things at once... I used like 5 healing potions + my extra life and no go. I have a few gods on but still, everything else up to that spawn was easy then BAM.

Those gators are easy in my opinion! I hate the blue fatties tho.
The only reflection that was seriously difficult were the ones with the crazy close-combat ninjas 0_0... probably because I was using hammer and musket lololol

I thought it was a lot easier than the other two had been when I played them the first time. Might be because I used Breakers bow which is autowin with stun.
Brad Shoemaker did the reflections with all idols on. I will not rest until I have done the same.
EDIT: BTW, those of you who have finished the game in just a few hours, did you turn idols on? I'm using all the idols I can and I'm about prolly 3/4 of the way through in about 8 hours. It makes it so much more challenging and fun.
I just finished my first run in about 9-10 hours with all idols available - I had a blast!
The different weaponry, the challenges, the story - everything was really enjoyable and I can only advice you to spend your money on this game, its so good.
I really enjoyed the different weapons and used the spear most of the time, because the range is really convenient - I'm not a huge fan of throwing it tho. For the ranged weapon I used the bow for the first half of the game and the pistols for the rest of it - in retroperspective I should have done it the other way around, because the enemies get stronger but fewer in the later stages of the game.
I picked the ending with saving Zulf & not resetting time and I really enjoyed how it turned out - if I'd be in the kids shoes I don't think I'd pick the restauration module - after all nobody would remember how things were, so how would that change anything except for the fact that everything would happen again? :o
I feel stupid now. I beat all the challenges without auto-aim. Might be why I had trouble.
I'm going through them atm, can't do the repeater one for the life of me, but I'm using an un-upgraded repeater and no-auto aim too. I did the squirt one without it easily enough. You just tumble onto the spawn point and hack away, you can kill almost all the green squirts as they emerge.
I maxed out my bow and machete, I really like the dynamic they have together. you can kite and line up shots with the bow very easily to deal with big guys, and the machette reliably cuts through hordes very well. I'm getting pretty good at counter-shielding now as well. I bought the game based on this thread and I have to say I'm incredibly impressed. It feels like a successor to braid, another beautifully rendered attempt to refine a classic game style

Ever since I got the pike I just used it for everything. At first on the level where you get it I didn't like it, but you realize the advantages pretty quickly. High crit chance, armor pierce, long range. You don't even need your ranged weapon to kill most turrets. I even feel comfortable letting myself stay at low health to get the 100% crit chance just because I know i'll be able to take care of everything before it even gets into attacking range. You can even kill those fire turret things basically from out of their range.
Once you turn on all the idols this becomes even more essential because if you don't kill something in one shot it'll heal. And possibly turn invisible while healing, so you really need that crit for a 1 hit kill. The pike lets you do that faster than a ranged weapon while still staying at a distance. With the idols it's just awkward to be at point blank range because they drop bombs when they die and hurt you when you touch them. For my second weapon I use the scrap musket, which you need to take care of crowds. The spear isn't so great for big packs of squirts/peckers/stinkeyes.
Saved Zulf and decided not to turn time back, turned out to be a decent ending.

Just played through for my first time. Love the game and is a ton of fun...definitely worth $15; I hope they add more content, I'd be willing to pay for some for sure.
Anywho, I used Machete / Repeater for a lot of the game until I got Mortar. Mortar literally rapes everything it seems like...I would just tumble around firing away and melting everything instantly. And just for fun I used the mortar skill that shot out like 6 shots at once...but that's pretty overkill. Plan to play through NewGame+ now with all idols on.
Just bought this yesterday off steam after trying the demo. This game is incredibly fun and the narration is great. My only problem so far is I can't seem to find a windowed mode, but other than that this is a must get for only $15.

Yeah, I'm done with the game now and the spear is definitely the best weapon (made the same switch as you from machete). Those 2 gators are easy once you get used to it... just attack one at a time until it dies and they won't both pop up to hit you.
I wish the weapons were more useful. It seems that once you get certain weapons, it becomes too easy.
Overall, the ending was disappointing for me but the game was fun enough.
Only things I didn't do : -Fire Bellows rank 1 (did rank 2 after like 50 tries... I do not get how you can get r1... these things piss me off). -I accidentally pressed re-do after doing the last weapon's trial. I got r1 but on my screen I can go back (though the rewards are gone). -Only did 6/10 gods in the dream sequences. Didn't try with more. -Got all upgrades but didn't max out all weapons.
All in all, a fun 1 time play through game IMO. 7/10 rating... nothing spectacular but enough to hold your interest.
Whenever I play this game, my biggest frustration is picking a weapon combo that I like the most. I'm currently doing a 10 idol run, and certain weapons send you directly to a quick death. Example: War Machete. You've got to have lightning quick reflexes and amazing control, especially since being that close range is suicidal with the idols on.
Most effective combos I've tried: -Carbine + Scrap Musket: Really strong 1/2 punch with amazing crowd control. Flaw is that it has problems with lots of fast, swarming enemies. Example: Peckers and the bigger versions of it. Second flaw is that you'll have some problems with armored enemies, if you went AoE for Carbine. Replacing Carbine with Pike helps to shore up this weakness, although you have to change your playstyle a bit. -Pike/Hammer + Mortar: By far, the one I like most. However, it just doesn't feel right to me compared to Carbine/SM for some reason. Probably because the two are like oil and water. Mortar is death at all ranges, especially with self-protection upgrade and can hit hidden enemies, like those damn rock hurling rodents. The Pike with speed and damage upgrades pretty much oneshots nearly all normal enemies and makes quick work of armored enemies/bosses. Hammer can substitute for Pike. -Flamethrower + Repeater: forgot the exact name for the fire thingy, but ability to cripple/DoT just tears through swarms. Peckers are no longer a problem (although the ones that throw spines are still a bit of a problem, but that's where Repeater comes in). Repeater is because it takes care of long ranged enemies like the spine throwing Peckers, and that's why I favor it over the Pike with this combination. I remember being able to use ONLY the flamethrower to solo the first two dream sequences (although I had help from the spirits by using the Leech drink).
I could list Mortar + Calamity Cannon but I HATE the Cannon. Hate using it with a passion.
I really want to use the War Machete effectively but it takes a lot more skill than what I have to be able to use it effectively in a 10 idol run. I think I'm going to try the DoT upgrades for it the next time I play.
Finished. Absolutely mindblowingly good. the game is a touch limited in scope, but like portal, it feels like a complete experience. It could have been half the length and still been great, and making it twice the length wouldn't really have done that much to improve it. I do think the final levels were kind of trivial though. Blockstunning the enemies and then ripping them apart was far too effective.
I've been waiting *so* long for another game like this. I'd pay full AAA price for it in a heartbeat, the artistry and care that has gone into it is incredible.
Interestingly, I stuck on bow and machette for the whole game. the bow is a surprisingly good anti horde weapon when upgraded a bit, since you can move and fire and roll around all over the place like a boss to line shots up. I upgraded the machette to be full on crit and +crit damage which made it exceptional at dicing through bosses and one shotting plants and other such inconveniences where the penetration from the bow wasn't necessary. doing 80-90 damage with a single throw is amazing. I imagine the other weapons are better upgraded, but they felt unwieldy compared to the bow/machette to me. they're very clean, precise weapons that once you get good with can get you out of anything.
I haven't tried the reflections with idols yet though, certainly haven't maxed out my levels either, so we'll see if they hold up to serious competition.
So when you chose to turn back time at the end, won't that just mean that no one remembers what happened and so they will eventually do the same thing again, creating an infinite loop of repetition?

During the final stage the narrator explains the Bastion and what it does, then he says (and I paraphrase) "So then you are wondering what is stopping the calamity from happening again. Honestly, I don't know."
They just added some new achievements if anyone cares. 6 of the 7 involve completing dream sequences with 5 or 10 idols on. If you have trouble with these, I'd advise going in with Mortar only...very easy really.

I was thinking about this and I do not think that the Calamity would happen again. When going through the mines it tells you what the cores and shards are. Essentially they are a backup of anywhere they were placed since they are rocks that remember. But they only had enough cores/shards for Caeldonia itself, not for the land of the Ura. I think (all speculation of course) that by using the bastion it would restore the city and nothing else since they only have the memory of a few areas. Just my theory. Caeldonia would come back, and despite the Ura being extremely pissed, there would be nothing they could do against Caeldonia in its prime.

Seriously. Also, instead of getting the upgrade that allows you to take no damage from it just press your shield button before you launch. Even if it goes off instantaneously your shield will still get up before the blast, shielding you from harm.
This game is awesome. If not the game itself the music is the best music I have ever heard in a game before. Its not the typical metal or rock you would usually find in most games, but amazingly beautiful music. They really went all out with the music in the game. Zia's song is espically powerful and I have it on my list of songs you must listen to. (the song contains no spoilers either)

Finish the credits, and you get the new game plus option, if you play through that you'l hear a lot of references to "I remember doing this before, feels like i've seen him before/etc", that basically tell you that reverting the calamity is doomed to repeat itself and living in the damaged world is the only possible non-repeating ending.
In the plot, from what I understand, there has been war between two factions, and Caelondia decides to bury Ura. But due to sabotage by Zia's father, the weapon backfired and caused the Calamity?
Then Zulf wants to use the Bastion to turn back time, so he gets the help of Ura to accomplish this?
I don't really see the sense in the final decision(s) then as you can choose to save Zulf but still continue living on the world or you could leave Zulf and still restore the world to before the calamity...
i played the demo on steam and i don't know what to think about it tbh. i like the narrator and how the whole world unfolds right in front of your feet. and the music is cool too. but after i played through the demo i had the impression, that the game lacks depth and i didn't have the desire to buy the game to play through it as whole.

i guess that's just my opinion so hatin'! :D
A lot of the "Depth" comes from the weapon system, each weapon has two branches of upgrades, each branch makes it into a completely different weapon. For instance, you can turn the machete into either a super fast but low range crit machine, or a powerful thrown weapon with poison tips.. The story is also very very solid. It really picks up about half way through.

The story was great, the layout of the game was very fun. The soundtrack was beautiful. I put it on my music player and I emailed the artist to praise his work.
I'm playing on New Game Plus, all the idols are active and I'm using the hammer and either the shotgun or the mortar.
The hammer is so freaking powerful, I'm breezing through bosses.
As for the shotgun, if you upgrade the knockback to the maximum, you can punt every enemy you find off the level. It was very useful with the ninjas at the end of the game.
I bought this with the recent Midweek Madness on Steam (50 % off), and I am loving it! I don't really know whats going on story-wise yet, but the combat is pretty fun and the game/soundtrack are amazing. My girlfriend saw me playing it and said "wow, thats really pretty". Indie games are always so refreshing. I love it!
picked this up and sale and finished it recently, was great. the combat was pretty weak in that they don't give you reason enough to use all the power given to you, but the narration and overall presentation made it worthwhile.

No reason to use the power? Have you tried to play with idols on?
You need those powerups to survive when more than 4 idols are active unless you are hardcore pro at this game. Some enemies are downright impossible on higher difficulty without armor pircing - just to mention one needed upgrade.
They just announced DLC content coming out for the game. Its free on Steam but $1 on XBL since microsoft doesn't alow free stuff on their marketplace. The DLC is called The Stranger's Dream and will include: The Stranger’s Dream DLC includes: · The Stranger’s Dream: a new fully narrated Who Knows Where sequence, bigger and more challenging than the others. You’ll gain a bit more insight into Rucks’ backstory as well as the history of Caelondia if you can survive this fight. · Score Attack Mode: a challenging new way to play through the story! You start at level one with all Spirits and Idols unlocked. Your combat performance is rated for efficiency, and all areas are repeatable. · No-Sweat Mode: for those who just want to experience the story of Bastion, this mode provides unlimited chances to carry on from where you left off if you’re defeated in battle.
Looking forward to it! Source:http://supergiantgames.com/?p=1212
This game is so awesome. I don't care what you have to gripe on about the game, the controls, the repetetive combat, nothing of that even matters to me. This game is one of the most enjoyable experiences I have EVER had sitting in front of this little illuminated piece of garbage we call a computer screen. It. Is. Just. Too. Much. FUN.

Go play it. Right. Now.
Hypnotoad compels thee.
I completely agree with this post. My #1 game of 2011 (though Trine 2 might come close)!
Just pick it up a few days ago with the steam promo. Awsome game, i just started the second playthrought with all idols actived, and it's a blast to finaly play a difficult game in 2011.
Wow I'm excited to try this free downloadable content
Also I'd like to support the defences of the game's difficulty. The idol system lets you make it as hard as you want. Even better, it lets you make it hard in a way which suits your playing style. Personally I don't like games being hard because enemies take ages to kill, but quite enjoy it being hard because they can kill me easily. It's easy to use the settings to achieve this.
Mhh, so I bought this game with the christmas sale, I'm not really into solo games, but I was looking for something to relax when SC2 and LoL makes me rage to hard, ended up getting hooked and finishing it in a few days. excellent game :D
I see you guys talking about a DLC, but I cant find it on steam, was it already included with the game since I bought it after DLC release? or is it not available anymore? or am I just retarded and unable to find it?

On Steam the DLC is automatically included, you don't need to download anything new.
Really enjoyed this one. Probably the greatest game I've played for less than 10 dollars (steam sale). The narrator is pitch perfect, and the ending decision left me stumped for a few minutes.
To live in a fantasy, where you and your love (I presume) are the only ones left alive. You can live without responsibility, doing what you like, when you like, where you like. A dream. Or, sacrifice this and all that you've done to give the human race another chance, including those who caused the calamity. Do they even deserve a second chance? Who's to say this won't happen again? Gosh, I can't even think it over now without second guessing my choice. What a game!

Definitely agree with it being best game played, altho i preordered it so i paid 15. still definitely worth it ^>^
imo the selfish choice was to let the world restart only to have the calamity happen again instead of letting the world move forward. I chose the latter
I just beat it and I have to say, it might just be my favorite game of the year. The game play is good, nothing spectacular, but the art + narrator + music is sooo god
Well after all the hype I thought I'd pick this up. The art and music was really good, but the lack of depth kinda annoyed me there was only four real levels of monsters and none felt particularly harder than the last - except for that fucking giant green plant that spewed those fucking eye things which was annoying to kill with the weapons I had. I beat the game with War Machete + Musket and later War Machete + Mortar/Calamity Cannon. The story was good, but not great - but the execution of the story was some of the best I've seen. Probably a 7/10 for me.

Play with more Idols on and it will be much harder
I just finished the game, and i loved it! Gameplay was pretty fun, a lot of weapons (I used Hammer + Bow at the beggining, switched into Pike + Carbine when unlocked), very good story line, amazing graphics and soundtrack. But levels and the game itself was pretty short tho.
I didn't get interested in the story right away... the repetitive combat in the begining didn't help. However as soon as you start unlocking new weapons you can vary your gameplay and it's very interesting. Got me a fully upgraded war machete thats deals more DPS than a pack of stimmed marines, it's very enjoyable ! Fun goes crescendo and the question climax at the end is really great. I regret a little that this kind of very personal and hard question to answer didn't came earlier in the game but it might be asking too much from an indie game, even as good as Bastion. I'm totally going to recommend it after I beat the New Game+.
In the meantime for everyone who liked the music :
this game is such a sweet indie game. i mean its not super revolutionary or anything, but what it does it does really well. and the art and sound directors need to be given fucking medals. that shit is the best Ive seen/heard in awhile.
I was about to post build that wall, but i saw the comment above me. this song is one of the most memorable parts for the game imo.

I've done it with 4 idols on, now doing it with all 10 - just killed the Anklegator. I've found that other than the Hammer, none of the early game weapons can really cut it against the Ura/things with armor. So I'm basically using Hammer+Calamity Cannon or Hammer+Fire Bellows to kill everything. The "enemies will have vengeance in the thrones of defeat" idol is so fucking annoying omg.
The problem isn't something Idols can fix, I think people are missing the point. You are rarely ever overwhelmed in the plot advancing levels of the game, Idols on or not. And more Idols doesn't exactly make the game more interesting, it just makes it more frantic. Not asking for difficulty, just pointing out that the structure of the game is a very routine one. The ground forms up, and a few projectile spitting goons with it. Point and shoot, swipe swipe swipe, what's next? I need interesting set ups, not the same situations with harder/faster/better versions of the same enemies. A harder game isn't necessarily a better one. Bastion thrives on its simplicity, but it could of been executed better.
Completely loved the game by the way, just being honest with my only disappointment -- as well as the ending feeling a bit sloppy.
Bump for this amazing game; highly encourage everyone to grab it while it is on sale.
Basically, think Secret of Mana + Legend of Mana game system with a badass narrator. If you liked those games, Bastion will be a blast from the past. If you have not played those games, then do yourself a favor and make it happen.
Some random tips from my first playthrough (no story spoilers):
The most powerful / overpowered thing in this game is your SHIELD. Practicing to get gold in the proving ground for it will give you a lot of mileage with respect of getting better at combat in the game (also, first prize is 2500 fragments!). When in doubt, block!
The "enemies will recover life" idol is NOT a good idea for story levels, as it can make bosses unkillable with certain gear combinations.
The lost-and-found is essentially a general store. I believe that it comes stocked with one of each weapon upgrade, with more added if you miss collecting them.
After you upgrade a weapon, you can actually switch from the options; you do not get locked in.
As the narrator tells you incessantly, it is a good idea to upgrade weapons before going for the gold in proving grounds.
Werewhiskey and the "everything gets hit around you when you die" cocktail can be put to creative uses for proving grounds.
Leechade is best used with damage-over-time attacks that are also fast-hitting (particularly FB with relevant upgrades).
There IS such a thing as overpowered and underpowered weapons; this little indie game is certainly not as fine-tuned as our beloved Starcraft. All of the toys you get are dynamically different from each other, and it's more fun to mix it up than to have a "set combo."
The most efficient weapon combos generally involve a hard-hitting attack and a fast attack or two hard-hitting attacks, with some armor penetration on either weapon to deal with various annoyances. Forget "melee" and "ranged;" the fang repeater + breaker bow for instance is arguably stronger / more fun than hammatime + one of the ranged.
Building the monument will make your fragment problems go away for a long time.
Just finished this game; a bit overrated in my opinion. Music was hit or miss, gameplay/weaponry was a bit lop-sided (tons of range no melee). Story was ok and yeah; the narrator sounded cool until the very end where he had like 20 surprises or "twists" so to speak.
Overall, I had a bit of fun, a bit short (3.5 hours) and I thought it was challenging at times. The color scheme is what I liked most but I definitely wouldn't call this game that superb.
