So I discovered Oblivion not too long ago, and being a big fan of BG2 and DA:O and whatnot, I really like the idea of a game that plays like a first person shooter but uses magic. Mass Effect and Bioshock have something along these lines, but they don't follow the traditional fantasy conventions I so desperately crave.
The problem with Oblivion is first that the graphics are dated by now, and the spells don't look that awesome. The second issue I have is that the use of magic is one aspect of the overall game, and on a PC it is a bit clunky to use (having to switch between spells in a menu and cast with 'c').
So what other games are out there that satisfy my desire for a magic/spell focused first person experience? I appreciate any recommendations
... Actually, now that I think about it, third person would be just as cool so long as it was only one dude. DA:O is too concerned with group tactics for my taste. I want a game where a single mage can destroy everything. EVERYTHING.
The Witcher. I'd also recommend the Gothic series because they are great games, but it's probably too old if even Oblivion is too ugly for you. You superficial person you!
Hahah yeah I am quite superficial when it comes to games these days. I grew up thinking Tie Fighter was the shit graphically, then BG2 blew me away.. now I'm spoiled by crysis and mass effect. Actually should've mentioned Witcher, cuz I had heard about it.. Is it graphically better than oblivion?
I don't remember much about the graphics of Oblivion or The Witcher, but The Witcher is younger and thus probably more technically advanced. Maybe search for some HD videos on Youtube and see if you like its looks. I forgot to mention Risen, which is just about the same as Gothic but with a different name, and it's from 2009.
Oblivion is still prettyer than Dark Messiah and the witcher.. thing with Oblivion is that there's tens of thousands of mods to it. Several houndred that makes the game itself better to look at and changes/adds spells..
With the basics of "beautifying" addons my computer can't run Oblivion at a playable FPS at all, and my computer is two years newer than the game itself.
Also, check out Risen. I can't remember if it's 3rd or 1st person, but the graphics are pretty sweet.. Storyline is pretty cool also, one of the few games that has got me to follow a storyline.

This is really true. A couple things to add:
You can set up hotkeys for spells for quicker casting if that's an issue. This way you can just hit 1 then c to cast, say, a weakness to fire spell, and then 2 then c to cast a fireball immediately after. If you weren't doing this, I can see how Oblivion would feel really clunky for a spellcaster.
There are a couple really popular magic-enhancing mods out there. They add quite a bit of depth to the magic system and are much more suited for playing a pure-caster than the base magic system alone. Really, the modders in the Morrowind/Oblivion community are amazing, and their works have gone a long way to making both games still interesting to play years later. You can find pretty much every mod you'd want at either TES Nexus or Planet Elder Scrolls
I am actually going to suggest Morrowind. The graphics are dated, but with the mods people have released, it looks better than oblivion, and has a better storyline imo.
I would personally also go with oblivion. It's a good 30 hours worth of gameplay, and if you get it for PC (I got it for 360) theres tons of user made mods to add on.

I played DA:origins, which was nice, but now I'm looking for a not so "tactical" more action like style
Can't find anything :.[
have you tried borderlands?
Indeed I have. I really couldn't keep it up after the first playthrough, its just too repetitive (haven't bought any DLCs). The "magic" class in that game is similar to the one in Mass Effect 2, but they aren't quit what I'm looking for in that regard.
Ideally, I'm imagining the spells/graphics in DA:O, but in the context of a single character game as opposed to part of group tactics.
BTW, QibingZero or anyone else: do you have any recommendations for the best graphics enhancements / magic use enhancements for oblivion? I'm checking out the Landscape LOD Texture Pack right now.
For those of you who are interested in modding Oblivion, here are some guides from Something Awful forums where they walk you through managing many addons and suggest the best ones:
They also have a great thread on modding Morrowind, and with some of the mods they've suggested, I would highly recommend replaying Morrowind with these mods, especially if you've never completed the main storyline.
As for new games, I was in the market myself and greatly appreciate the contributions in this thread, some of the trailers for these games look like a lot of fun.
The SA posts above are actually quite a good resource. It will definitely seem like a lot of work to get that many mods working correctly, but it's worth it for just how utterly amazing the gameplay ends up being when you do.
As for Morrowind vs Oblivion, I too prefer Morrowind for various reasons (and have probably spent 10x more hours playing it), but Oblivion is fun in it's own way and I focused on it simply because the OP seemed concerned largely with graphics.
