I mean like the basic idea of the game is to dodge tons of bullets in a shoot'em up is pretty normal, what makes this game so special? Apart from the music, there's a little official content, but other people have made a buttload of spin-off games, manga strips, promotional videos, artwork, memes etc. in which they add their own interpretation on the characters' personalities. Now, there is so much content to occupy yourself with. Oh yeah, over a hundred flying animated girls that spam bullets at each other for almost no reason. | ||

Touhou's fanbase is HUGE, that's what makes it special. You can find fan animations online, or lots of music videos, or random CGI fights, etc. etc. You can also find lots of remix/arranges for each song, which tend to have epic melodies and so translate well to remix/arranges. Some of the most popular tracks have over 500 remix/arranges of them. Ofc, there is a lot of fan art as well. | ||

what makes it popular - the music and characters + fandom, and the fact that the creator hasn't tried to monetize his creation and slap copyrights over everything, which allows the fandom to flourish | ||
