1. Let's get this party started! + Show Spoiler + I quite like this song for two reason outside of how it sounds. First, it's rare and nice to have a touhou inspired which is original. It weaves a new set of ideas into a character. In space there are two common catgories of imagined celestial existence: the technological (humans, advanced allies, and enemies), and the Eldritch horrors. Here is a third: sentient magic. See that first picture. It also has this addictive, "continuing" melody. Serious props to tyvb, the guy who made this song. 2. + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xlNfM4ndRwk Heavenly piano which builds up a pleasant humming bass. Makes you want to close your eyes and lose yourself in the music. Also it gets better. The percussion and bass keep the tempo above an "unplugged" arrange, but its hardly techno. 3. + Show Spoiler + 4. More of the same + Show Spoiler + awesomeness http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR9hgbveY9E This "maple wise" stage theme from Mystic Square comes up quite a bit, especally since its a rare pc-98 arrange. Other recommendable pc-98 song arranges (the originals are worth checking out as well are Alice Maestra, Magic Shop of Raspberry. End of Daylight is a solid pc-98 from ZUN. Notice all that instrumentation and noises during the soft section. Unduplicatible stuff. In my opinion it doesn't sound very pc-98 at all when the bass kicks in. 5. + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s8VH4yTZvI This vocal just came out today. It was a auto-pick. 6. + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NE06P-5qWcw A solid arrange, with a nice unchanging stance, making it the pick for the heart of this list. 7. + Show Spoiler + half-way, There's no turning back now. Youmu is on prowl. The deathly intent does recede for some time, but the accompaniment drives the song at a blinding pace. I'm not sure what I think about the uber-fast original melody at 2:40, but I like what follows (2:45). The opening section is easy to characterize, but the more folkish sections? I got it. After the events of PCB, Yuyuko had a tea party/ summer festival (cause it was basically summer by then). Yuyuko, Yukari, and Remelia got Youmu to rematch Sakuya, this time in a melee, instead of danmaku. The touhous sip their tea, as clangs of metal and metal reverberate through the grounds. If by any chance, you are short one actual sword fight, this will do. 8. + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnojOUOTBfk I'm getting tired...Well this one was just plain original. The instrument duet was nice as well. 9. + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ncq5XvTFPU The chaos... The power... 10. + Show Spoiler [the epicness broke the formatting] + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2BCaWhbtJo Normally one would complain about the overly familiar melodies, but this one is literally jaw-droppingly epic 11. + Show Spoiler + http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFv1bil9uDM Riveting. Clear and bright as the night moon. 12. + Show Spoiler + The tea party festival must go on! This one just hit with a thousand tons of folk. Merry Christmas Everyone! Cheers~

I follow a bunch of circles on twitter so sometimes stuff will float by. I listen to the favorites of some youtubers especially kkcwkoh, or kkcwkoh's piano uploads (i'm too lazy to find some good ones myself haha) I follow for piano: aojiru, abab, and bakeneko otherwise I'll just listen to the ones shared here :D

As a song by itself it's okay (I probably have a few different words to say about it on this regard as well), but it doesn't have a strong Touhou vibe to it and it feels like the artist is exploring too many ideas to really forge a strong connection to the character. It'll probably work as intended in the fan-game it's for, but if I listened to it without any context I would have NEVER thought Remilia. Hmm, I never thought of it in that way. I agree that without context I would not have considered Remelia either. I would still argue, that a character has but one theme (plus a stage theme), and its nice to have something outside of that. What makes the connection to a character of an arrange any less arbitrary than an original character theme? The only connection is to ZUN's theme and the notes within. Aside from that, the distinctions are that it doesn't fall within the "touhou" style like this piano piece, and the perhaps vast difference in interpretation of the character. If you played stage 6 of eosd muted, would you consider septette connected, because it "is" her theme? Omg the font is bloody hard to read. So fitting though. The last panel has all my hate though. What have you guys planned for Christmas?

If you played stage 6 of eosd muted, would you consider septette connected, because it "is" her theme? That is sort of the point; it's arbitrary in that one person wrote the song first and attributed it to a character, and that becomes canon. The doujin writer, whether musician, artist, or writer, needs to take the basis of the original work and build upon that in interesting ways. For music, you already have source material to work with, and that source material establishes a strong sense of character with things like chord progressions, similar motifs/sequences, instrumentation, etc. and the key is to make something new and different and interesting but still retains some of that character quality established by the original. Otherwise it's just like reading Harry Potter fanfiction where Hermione is a smoking-hot witch-slut from books 1-7 whose only similar characteristic is that she has brown hair. It doesn't make any sense. OK, I exaggerate, because music can be perceived far more subjectively than writing, so there's plenty of leeway for personal interpretation. I don't like it as a character theme, though I do think it has some merit as a stage theme if the subsequent boss theme is complementary enough to both it and canon. But even ZUN himself is troublesome in this regard because at first listen Night Sakura of Dead Spirits makes perfect sense to me as an Underworld theme, but Ghost Lead doesn't make sense as a Yuyuko theme. ZUN sometimes does interesting things thematically within a single game, but it really depends on game to game, and then across games it's almost like he forgets everything he established elsewhere. I don't think I would have associated Remilia with Septette instantly (although I could make a small argument for that), but you could probably easily identify Tepes as an associated theme from a blind pool after Septette. Even after all of this the beauty (and the flaw, too) of the Touhou community is that you can really take anything you want from the series and make something out of it, so long as you acknowledge where it's from. Some works by Tasogare Frontier use their own original music, which sounds nothing like the musical character of the series. They're fine as games, but I'm pretty indifferent to them as games. Personally, I think that fanworks are best when they create something that feels like the original but establish their own character in a strong, but unassuming way. Almost in a "I can't believe ZUN *didn't* make this" kind of way. + Show Spoiler [on fanpiano] + it's alright, but it needs more random ass keychanges and the melody is too confined to a single octave and a half for the first half of the song Also, I can attest that the modern church works pretty much exactly the way the comic depicts.
