well I've always picked a chopin song since I first did it back in like 7th grade, haha. It was not really intentional, but after a couple times I realized this and I was like... well, this song I have prepared pretty well, and it's epic, let's do it! Now this year I picked another chopin hahaha
3rd waltz, and 4th chopin song/solo this year xD
Sort of a pity i just realized i didnt do a piano solo for 9th grade or 6th =/. I did one in 9th grade, it was quite an easy song that I think I played way too slow lol, it was some kind of venetian boat song I think.

This is the waltz I'm doing this year. Tbh it's quite easy, and I was quite worried it was too simple... I'd rather pick a fast song than a slower one with emotion (of course I feel more comfortable with the emotion and it's less stressful to practice, but I feel that if I get nervous during a solo then I can at least just go through the motions with the fast song instead of having to worry about the tiny things... idk if it helps though lol).
There is a little fast part though, but not that fast (this guy just interprets it fast, but it's not the fast 16th note kind of fast but close I guess). I was worried cus I felt this

was harder than this one (this dude plays it really fast, it's common since they like to show off how fast they can play lol).
This year's is a lot longer, 4 minutes, but it's slower and repeats a shit ton just like last year's, so the "material" is actually roughly the same.
Though I did realize after picking the song (1st link) that although it's not quite fast or anything, it is technically difficult. Releasing the notes at the perfect time, rolling fingers perfectly, making sure I put the right amount of emphasis on each note and pay attention to all the dynamics, etc. A lot of small things to make it really emotional, I guess xD So this is something new for me this year.

So this includes the song being longer, harder, less repetitive, etc. At the end of some months we'll see who has the most points :D
Perhaps 1st place gets 3 points, 2nd 2 points, 3rd 1 point? Then total them up.
How about a spring season then summer :D

An absurd amount of time, maybe like 40 hours. On and off consistently since late Feb or so. I'll be free after finals and have a bunch of other songs which at varying degrees of completeness, so sure I'll be up for that!

40 hours isn't that absurd, especially if the hard parts of the song are just a bit out of reach of your skill level. The song's not long like 4 minutes but it is quite fast.
Also I don't expect you guys nor expect myself to be churning out super hard long songs every 2 weeks lol, there are such things as learning easier songs and hoping you might still win.
Maybe 2 weeks is too little then. If you practice 1 hour a day, that's 14 hours to learn and play a song, not nearly enough for a challenging song, unless you guys are willing to pump it up to 2 hours a day to really get good and learn some touhou :D.
We could do every 3 or 4 weeks, perhaps 2 or 3 in the summer, so that we are encouraged more to do hard songs and we won't all just do easy songs, though it will still be an option xD
