I enjoyed NonY and Day[9]'s commentary on the MSL finals so much, immediately I knew this had to be made into a much more solid viewable media. What I mean by that is that many Starcraft fans sometimes do these kinds of commentary of their own, or subtitles for favorite VODs, but these things tend to disappear in a short time, and after a couple of months already forum posts start to pop up every once in a while asking 'where can I get that old commentary/subtitle...' and then you have to find and download the correct VOD to sync it with, anyway you know what I mean. I thought very highly of their analysis of the game, Day[9] and rS.NonY said a lot of what I felt when watching the finals, and so much more. Their understanding of the game is far greater than my own, explanations of the deeper concepts and ideas behind what the players had in mind really enlightened me about what went on in the game beyond what seemed obvious.
So, myself lacking the required video editing skills, I got my friend who's an excellent anime encoder (and wishes to remain incognito) to help me out with this project, and he did an amazing job! to make a very long story short (because it was more complicated than what I'll explain here) basically we (ok.. he, but I was encouraging!) took the original wmvs of the finals, stripped them of the audio, then synced them with the commentary audio into one file (with the original sound lower on volume and the commentary way higher, we could also go for pure commentary and no background sound but after comparing we found that the background sounds are really crucial to keep the game atmosphere), the audio files are longer than the actual videos because Day and NonY continued talking about the games after they were over, which means you had to add more video or YouTube and other video hosting sites would reject the 'audio only' parts, so we added a TeamLiquid logo (with fade-in) until the audio was finished, which means we had to convert the wmvs into avi format, then re-introduce the synced sound files inside, and all sorts of tweaks in the middle to keep the video/audio from being damaged in quality (big success), and we're very happy with the results :-)
And here it is, forever immortalized :-)
Pre-Game Commentary: (awards ceremony)
MSL Finals Game-1:
MSL Finals Game-2:
MSL Finals Game-3:
Programs used: (XviD for codec. Also had to use 3 versions of vdub, just because mainline vdub sucks)
VirtualDubMPEG2 for ASF/WMV extraction & frameserving. VirtualDub (normal) for encoding. VirtualDubMod for muxing. (AviMuxGUI is excellent but the results don't always turn out compatible with all players, or YouTube) Audacity for audio editing. WM Encoder for making WMAs. WM Stream Editor for remuxing WMAs into WMVs. LAME for encoding MP3s. And of course Avisynth for video editing.
For anyone interested, the general process went as following:
VdubMPEG2: Load WMV, demux audio, start frameserver. Avisynth: Add logo to frameserved video. VirtualDub: Encode with XviD to AVI. Audacity: Mix audio + commentary. Lame: Encode audio to mp3. VirtualDubMod: Mux mp3 with video.
I'm a YouTube uploader, but if any of you wants to upload the games on other video hosting sites, the more the better, I'll upload the files onto RapidShare tommorow and post the link.
Awesome, have u tried Adobe Premiere for your editing purposes? In my experience it easier than mulitiple programs especially for leveling your volumes.

Yeah I agree, VoileteK did so much for BW community.

Let me say, NoNy I don't think you sound like a fag. You just sound like there is a stick shoved up your ass. Your commentary about gameplay is good. Your lack of tone and personality is a real turn-off.
Intro to Game 2: Day: I get so exciting even just watching these VODs NoNy(lamest most unenthusiatic response ever): (Robot voice) Yes *pause* I love to watch them too.

I don't understand your.. anger.. against NonY, he did this commentary obviously for free, tons of people enjoying it, he doesn't deserve this kind of language.
Nony and Day, that was awesome commentary. You know how they say the commentator in the Daigo highlight video of his Ken full-parrying Justin's ChunLi's super sounded corny? Well, that's because he probably was used to expletives to express excitement but had to subconsciously tone it down.
The point is, you guys should be the WCG announcers. And I really hate swearing. It's a form of lack of self-control.

I really feel like there is a huge difference in maturity and competence between these brothers.
Day >>> Tasteless in speech, broodwar, and analysis.
Don't be embarassed Day, you didn't sound faggy, you sounded 100x better than your brother has ever casted.
Furthermore, Nony's sound quality is 10x better, but you sound 10x less faggy and uptight than him.
Well I dont think ITG helps many people, they keep sending out guys like Wacksteve and TossSpot (wc3). If ITG is there and its not tasteless, theres going to be alot of probes called herbie going around, and alot of battles being missed.

hm
First of all i think that what Nony and Day did was awsome and i'm happy to see they've done this.
But i feel it's almost unfair to compare this to the live casts i've done... this is a VOD they've both seen before. Obviously the analysis is going to be great--and it was. When i cast it's live, many times solo and also infront of a big audience that i am paid to entertain.
As far as speaking goes i think they're speech is great. Try speaking solo (no co-caster) and controling the oberver screen while speaking the entire time. Trying to control the camera at a speed where you catch everything and go slow enough for the observers to see the game accurately is quite difficult. I'm not even going to say i'm very good at it, i'll just say that that it makes the whole casting process about 10x harder than you would ever believe... especially casting infront a live audience i'm told i must interact with as well as a live stream over the internet.
I'm also told to make the game understandable for everyone watching. That means people who don't even know the diffrence between terran, zerg and protoss. There are times where i simply spend the start of the game explaining why players need to mine minerals. This is what i'm told to do by the people who pay me and send me to these tournaments. And i do it to get more people following starcraft, because i have every intention of helping starcraft and e-sports on ALL levels.
I'm not too sure what you mean by maturity but i'm sure if you met us both you would see no diffrence. Please understand that the character you see as 'Tasteless the caster' is actually a personality i made up for the sake of entertainment, while it refelcts a part of my humor i'm not EXACTLY like that in person. If your refrencing some of the jokes I make i'm simply trying to add my own humor to the game, i'm sorry if you don't like it. I even do non broodwar related things like wresteling Carmac (a judo black belt) and have it filmed and put on the internet just to try to give more to the coumminty. But I don't think an immature person can convince a major company to send him to another country to cover a major event with the entire e-sports universe watching. Keep in mind i started doing this with no public speaking experience at all--I hope people would feel i've imporved (and i'm still trying) since i started doing this--which i did for the community
I'm not saying i'm a hero or that i'm the best or that i'm even owed something by the community, i'm just asking that you not make such a crass judgment as to compare us or the VODs which were produced in completely diffrent enviorments with completely diffrent expectations.
Again, excellent job nony and day : ) i look forward to more of these.
PS. You do not sound 'faggish' at all sean ; ) I actually went through the exact same experience when i first heard my own voice casting a game. Eventually you'll get used to it. I <3 u and ur a great brother
But this way it also highlights how our beloved Plott Brothers have evolved in their commentating, with Sean live-casting the MSL finals (to a smallish-ish audience), and Tastless not showing all that much.
I really hope GOM takes Tastless up again to cast their SC2 games, as GOM has been awarded the rights to SC2 broadcasting by Blizzard.
