Everglow MV takes the cake. It has the worst direction by far. Is it really an MV if cant i even watch 10 seconds of it? At least their live performance was better.

That said, there are 10 of them and the group is more than half fluff so it's not at all hard to see many of them resigning with someone else and continuing as a smaller group.

Crayon Pop is the only one there that had an unusual concept, all the others were very much typical of idol groups and aren't much different than all the current mainstream groups. What I mean is that k-pop seems to increasingly—or rather, exclusively—embrace the sexy and (fake) emotional concepts over the cute, innocent, fun concepts, especially these last couple of years its popularity has been exploding. I can't seem to find a new group whose members I can connect to or whose music I'd enjoy as I did 크레용팝, old (!) 티아라, some 레인보우 or 칠학년일반. Everything is over-produced, plastic, soulless crap. I realise k-pop has always been a business first, but it's gotten worse. It could also be me of course, but at least that's my impression. I wish I was wrong, but am I really, and if so, where's that cute group embracing a fun concept? K-pop just seemed more light-hearted a decade ago. And the music was more fun.

This is one that is currently promoting (edit: it is also trash imo): Also Twice can be said to have some fun stuff, maybe not to the same extreme cuteness I guess.

And that's what I'm missing. ![]() Also, early 티아라, an example of classy sex-appeal, as opposed to the cheap bitch crap that is so prominent today. And, again, the music was so much better. + Show Spoiler +

Crayon Pop was not a successful group; they struggled just to keep the group alive and were able to do so for a little while thanks to an unusually invested niche group of fans. Soyul abruptly getting pregnant was likely the catalyst for ending the group, but even without it the writing was already on the wall. Later on Ellin got caught scamming a boyfriend out of a substantial amount of money. It's a pretty far reach to call them mature. Even some of what you mentioned as cute had sexualized versions or vice versa, like Rainbow vs Orange Caramel or T-ara's Bo Peep; they simply went after both sections of the market. You'll find a great many of the current groups have done cute concepts. Typically they start with them and then phase more toward sexy concepts, but I suspect that's in part related to age. It's much harder to sell sexy when you have so many members barely (or not yet) even legal adults. The reality is if you don't like what's out there, it's probably time to find a new genre rather than being unhappy listening to/watching it. + Show Spoiler [Woo!Ah!] + + Show Spoiler [Weeekly] + + Show Spoiler [Fromis9] + + Show Spoiler [WJSN] +

In part, that's because it's overwhelmingly less successful and therefore less visible/relinked. That was true then and it's still true now. Sex sells. Of course you're right, the songs and groups I mentioned as examples are my favourites from those times when I first discovered and got interested in k-pop, so not only do I see them through rose-tinted glasses, but they were also what remained after my personal filtering process. I haven't been following the industry very closely since Crayon Pop dissolved, so I'm unaware of the more obscure groups. It's just that nothing of what I heard solely due to it's popularity was able to pull me back in. But some of your linked videos convinced me to dig a bit deeper again, thank you again for taking the time! When I was referring to Crayon Pop as mature earlier I primarily meant their age and ability to pull off the cute/humble/modest concept despite that. Because it's often age that's brought up as an argument against cute concepts, when imo the characters of the girls (and probably writers/producers) and commercial interests are way more important. I do have another question: are any of you familiar with the era roughly 2000-2010 and can recommend some groups, songs, best of videos or other starting points? I remember liking some titles from that time 10 years ago, but I have a hard time finding what I'm looking for.
