The trailer does this movie absolutely zero justice at all. I dont care about the graphics or anything. Apparently the trailer I watched gave me a good view of what the storyline is going to be, and the storyline sounds absolutely dreadful.
So don't watch it and miss out.

It's cool yhnmnk probably thought Star Wars sucked because it wasn't an original story. He probably also hated Inglorious Basterds and There Will Be Blood because those stories had been told before too.
By the way, I did see the film today in 3D and I was utterly floored by how convincing the world was. One thing I rarely do while watching film is become so absorbed that I don't even take note of the script or acting. In this sense, it was one of the best movies I've seen in years, and I don't say this lightly.
From what little I could remember, script was minimalist, but it was realistic and accomplished the massive amount of exposition and development that needed to happen during each act of the movie. The plot so absorbed me, with some minor interesting twists and creatively timed and brilliantly placed and conceived moments of tension, that I really just didn't consider even for a moment that I was watching the same types of movies I normally see.
And for people who have heard the movie is almost 'physical', it's true. There are moments where you are really there on Pandora looking down over a waterfall or over a cliff and I got a very real feeling of vertigo and had to lean back in my seat.
Heavy Spoilers: + Show Spoiler +There are moments I feel might be too controversial for most American audiences here. The Na'vi are very religious, 'intelligent' people even though they're 'savages' and yet the human scientists realize their world's biodiversity is so incredible, I think Cameron was brave in having Sigourney Weaver say "Enwa is real! I'm with her!" It comes across as forced, even if its merely some kind of reference to her absorption into the fold of the Pandoran neural network. I think the idea of the planet as a single living organism kind of didn't come off as strong by the end as it needed to.
And the 'victory' at the end seemed incredibly hollow to me. I mean its 2154, I think any truly greedy Humans//Humanity in general would just come back, extremely pissed off, and carpet bomb/orbitally bombard the entire population for killing human scientists and marines/corporate workers.
Another thing that seemed strange to me was the necessity of the physical bond between the Na'vi and all the beasts they tamed/befriended. Humans can control a horse with just words and some subtle directions, why not the Na'vi? And my final problem with the whole scheme here was that their control apparatus appeared to come through their braided hair. Why not their tails or their arms or something? It just seems a strange evolutionary trick.
Finally, the plot and some of the biological elements actually remind me a lot of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind by Hayao Miyazaki...

At times, dust would float across my eyes and I would try to swipe it away only to realize it was dust. IN THE MOVIE. The sad thing is I did it like 5 times. I must have looked hilarious swiping at air.

So quick question:
There are three types of showings available: Avatar, Avatar 3D, Avatar IMAX.
Which one do you recommend and why?

Which one do you recommend and why? Any of the three, it was a good movie in all of them(I saw it in regular theatre and imax, just assuming 3d is good aswell...) and probably is more personal preference than anything.

I begged my gf to go with me (later on bribed her with a D&G sunglass) because she doesn't like sci-fi.
She was crying by the end because the MOVIE IS THAT EPIC.
We couldn't get the 3D or IMAX tickets and were allocated some shitty ass video room in the end. And still the quality of the movie was so good that it transcend all of that bs.
Go see it, seriously. It is possibly the best sci fi epic in 2009.

Such an amazing movie. I'm actually considering seeing it again!
|
Seeing it again at the IMAX for sure

World of Warcraft (Zangarmarsh, floating mountains), Pocahontas (self evident), Dinotopia, C&C (orcas), FF7 (Mako), Mech Warrior.
the movie was great! :D watched it in 3d... awesome

The inbred child of Dances with Wolves and Dune. The story is super lame and every single scene is painfully predictable. No wonder the actors are almost all no-names, the script is so fucking laughable.
STILL 100% recommended because the visuals are just that damn good. Just see it in the most comfy theater possible, shit is loooooong.

Avatar 3D is GOOD. nuff said.
|
Really great movie. Sadly I watched it not in 3D, and in a pretty shitty quality theater (screen was kinda blurry). Regardless, I still enjoyed the fuck out of it. Easily worth every penny and I'll probably watch it again in IMAX.

Make sure you see it in 3d. 2d can't do it justice at all.

Answere to one point in the Spoiler. + Show Spoiler + Who sais they won't comeback for a "Avatar 2" movie? It took 5 years and a couple of months to go there, as they slept in the beginning of the movie, who says they wont be back in 10 years?
|
There will be another movie, one for sure. The female lead apparently before the movie's release was revealed to have signed on for two more films.
|
Visually amazing. Don't miss seeing this on an imax screen if you have the chance. It will never be the same on a smaller, non-3D screen.
+ Show Spoiler +The scene with the hammerhead rhino things destroying the human army reminded me of ultralisks overrunning a group of marines and goliaths. It was very satisfying for a terran hater like me.

Negatives: The writing wasn't up to snuff and the plot was very predictable. Positives: Scenes were executed well and the pacing was excellent for a 2hr30min + movie.
Overall, I thought the movie was a B+ venturing into the low As.
Also, Michelle Rodriguez was rocking those aviators.
