Kouta flat out sealed everything off, but you have to consider that the events happened 7-10 years ago (not sure on the exact amount of time), so it's possible that it isn't a sealing that occurred right away, but he forgot the events over the course of his life (because he didn't want to remember something so terrible, so he told himself that there was an accident). The first appearance of Nyuu, as far as we could tell, was on the beach after Lucy escaped from the facility. Likely from the impact of the bullet/helmet, not triggered by seeing Kouta (as they found her on the beach as Nyuu). The instances where she reverts back to Lucy, she's well aware of the things she did. Been awhile since I've watched the series, but I don't believe they really went into why she was going in between Lucy/Nyuu. With Mayu, the events were all recent. She ran away from home because her step father was doing the things he was. So, while it's something she could seal away with time, it's still all fresh in mind, and living on the streets, she has a reminder every day of her life. There's several other things to consider. I think, though I'm not positive, that Kouta may have been a bit younger than Mayu was when everything happened to him. That would make it a bit easier to forget things. + Show Spoiler + Also, the actual events that would cause memory lapse are completely different. I'd say that watching your little sister/father be torn apart by invisible arms, right in front of you, being splattered in their blood is quite a bit different than your step father molesting you. Sure, the second isn't any fun, and is quite a traumatic experience, but I personally don't think they're on the same level. | ||

Watched Basilisk a few months back. Lots of blood, not a lot of dismemberment from what I remember, but it was pretty good. Basically a love story about the head of rival ninja clans that are in a battle to the death. Some unique abilities (ninjitsu?), and fighting sequences. Generally gory, but I wouldn't really say it's darker than Elfen Lied. Unless of course you just mean darker/gory in general, and not darker/gorier than Elfen Lied. Edit: Which I'm pretty sure you did mean. Just still had Elfen Lied on the mind. Still can't think of many dark series off the top of my head though. Berserk was good (as mentioned above), but most people will have seen it by now, I reckon. | ||
