Yeah the Battle of Amlitzer was is like the first battle of the main OVA where LOGH shows off what it can do. The ramifications of that battle will be felt through virtually the entire series! The next arc is is pretty much on point for almost the whole thing, and all the other admirals apart from the Big 3 will start getting more focus too.

He's such a cliche, but it works so well in the context of the series.

I'd peg Oberstein as best written.

Yang as favourite character. It's prolly Mittermeyer as admiral. And I agree with Spazer that Oberstein is best written.

About Oberstein, hes a good character, but I don't think the writing behind him is that strong. You can sum his character up in "what is the most machiavellian thing you could possibly do in any situation", and then cuts out virtually any humanizing traits (other than the dog, as dogs make for the ultimate humanizing trait).

The writing of the plot feels a bit rough to be honest but I'm getting a hang of it. I would say it's ok but I'm more interested in Hamyuts than anything else. Ep11 had way too many flashbacks about characters I don't care about. Ep12 was mostly flashback but it was interesting. It made me curious: How did Hamyuts become the Head of the Library? Looking forward to what is going to the next arc, now that Mattalast's and Hamyuts relationship is established.

Yeah but the way they established that made the character really interesting. For the longest time you never knew what his real goal was and if he had ulterior motives.

Similar to Miragee, I liked how vague his motivations were at the start. There was a long period of time where I was certain that he was behind the scheme to remove our dear Siegfried Kircheis. Everyone regards him with suspicion, yet there is nothing to pin the blame on him. Was he moving to cover Reinhard out of true loyalty, or was it an act to curry favor? And so on.

During Reinhard's crisis of faith, he's the the one that ALL the admirals hate, yet he's ultimately the guy who holds the ship together. Despite the fact that nobody trusts him (except Reinhard), he retains his position and power because of his political skill and savvy. His cold-bloodedness is very representative of the darker side of autocracy. The entire admiralty recognizes this and hates it, yet they let it slide because they realize its necessity (or at the very least, its usefulness). The admiralty may throw a fit every so often, but Oberstein's continued existence shows that they quietly approve of his actions. It's a reminder of what it takes to retain power, and how easy it is for an autocracy to become tyranny.

In the latter half of the series, there are a lot of times where he behaves like a dick because... I guess he just hates everyone? It's hard to tell. In general though, it's actually detrimental to his cause since nobody wants to follow his orders. There's also a lot of times where Oberstein has a lot of information about certain events, yet he is either too slow or unwilling to stop them. To me, it's interesting thinking about which one of those two it is. Did he plan his own death, or was it really an accident? Etc.

On that note, I do think that the way his story ended did a lot to color my perception of him as a character.
