Not generally, no. It was just one of those show he always said he would start watching someday but it never happened until now and it was discussed so often that my brain saved it as "stuff that wouldn't happen".

12 episodes into LoGH and + Show Spoiler +it's been a decent watch so far. Using some classic music during battles, tactics and the overall scale of the war is something that I really like. I'm at the part where the fortress was captured and the alliance invasion of 30 million is about to commence. Excited to see just how the Empire repels this considering that Yang is part of this. A Reinhard vs Yang showdown should be good!
Now having said all that, my biggest pickle about the show is that at times, it feels like some episodes are fillers. Yes, yes I know that it's a long show and not every episode can be a back and forth battle in space but episodes like the ones where his sister is kidnapped or even that episode where Sieg had to go up against that rogue planet etc... just feel that way. Yep, I realize they tie into the story in terms of envy for the former and giving Sieg a promotion for the latter. I do hope that from here on out, we'll see more intense battles!

The first arc is kinda dull plotwise, and is mostly a setup for the factions/personalities. The series as a whole has some fairly questionable writing in some arcs, but since there's literally no other anime that can really claim to be an actual epic, it gets a pass. The real strength of the show lies in its strong characters and dialogue anyways.

Spazer has the right of it. I would say that the part you are getting close to marks the beginning of what makes LOGH what it is, and it only gets better from there.
Its worth nothing that there are more than a few episodes in the first dozen or so that are not from the Novel. Or rather, are side stories that are getting crammed into Volume 1 to space things out. Things are much more on point after the first dozen episodes. But even then, the "filler" is enjoyable to me since they are all good for world building.
The episode where Kircheis had to go do his thing wasn't filler, although the way it went down was much different from how it was in the books.
