I mean, I almost want to say it's a "cultural" thing? (rofl) But for the most part, I think character appeal plays an incredibly large part in why people watch animu. You're more willing to watch and be entertained by a chara you like because to a degree, you get invested in it.
I guess the disturbing part could possibly be when people (and reptile) take a step further with 2D fanservice? But even then, I can even rationalize it.
Crab is pretty garbo indeed. If you think about air time, she's prob on par with Snake or Math (in the future). Def even less than Fire Sisters. lul

Senjougahara is definitly one of my fav girls in anime, I spent 2 hours last month trying to find a figure of her in akihabara but there was only a second hand and doubling the original price.

Srsly, Gahara was in... a lot of Bakemonogatari. Obviously her arc, the next one, then Kanbaru all had lots or a fair amount of Gahara. She didn't do anything during snake and Neko but had her moment before neko as well with the date. Then nise arc1 (introduction, it has it's own OP so I call it "arc"  ) was all about her, nise arc2 (Karen) was lots of Gahara and then nothing (?) in Tsukihi phoenix.
Can't remember what neko kuro was but shiro certainly had lots of gahara x Hanekawa, Snake s2 arc was a decent amount. Then there's Koimonogatari with the based Kaiki vs Gahara rematch. Owarimonogatari as well (that punch, #NeverForget).
aaaaaand I get the feeling I should have started counting where she's NOT getting screentime because I'm pretty sure I'm leaving stuff out here as well

If a certain piece of canon from viking afterlife is to be believed then Karen's lack of screen time is mostly due to Kanbaru exhausting her with her shenanigans.

It's not that I hate it, but I don't find it particularly strong. Hell, I like the Saekano girls more. Utaha and Kato are good and even Eriri is OK-ish by now.
Senjougahara does look nice though.

I don't dislike Gatari's cast aside from Crab and Cat, I'm just indifferent towards most of the cast. Still need to watch Hana and Kizu before I can have a proper opinion on Bat and Monkey.
Favorite characters are Kaiki,Snek and Snail.

I prob hate this meme the most. More than my aversion to crab. Also sugoi with snake. I feel like people in TLADT are apathetic towards Cat but a few dislike Snake. ;o
