Which is why I could sort of say "oh these effects are pretty neat" and leave it at that. I'm surprised people are emotionally touched though. If we were in an ideal world, I'd agree, but all the other reviews are basically talking about how the story is surprisingly good and that they got so emotional over it. T_T

I laughed. Wow, the salt is real. I liked it and you did bring up some excellent points, shame they can't respect someone else's opinion and at least try to see things from their perspective. I personally didn't pay attention to the story that much, I only watched it for the music and visuals, but on a second viewing where I did pay attention to the story, it was pretty much what you said

If nothing else, it's pretty funny that people are praising a six minute music video for being emotionally touching. Doubly so when half of it is basically dedicated to fanservice.

You replied to an article about Microsoft's chatbot, so I thought you were asking why they still make chatbots.
If you were questioning why they make these girlfriend apps, it's the same as why any product gets made - because people will buy it. The secondary answer is that getting people to converse with a bot gives you extremely valuable data. The company that developed the algorithm is surely interested in that.

When I compare Shelter to other short anime set to music like Furiko, Tsumiki no Ie, the Daicon opening animation, the story is bad, but how much does the music play into it? My notes after a rewatch: + Show Spoiler +How come the dad couldn't generate other people inside this beyond state of the art simulation? There's some FPS drops that are pretty distracting. Visuals are nice, but nothing too outstanding. Music is about what I expect from Porter Robinson, it won't be something I listen to frequently but I wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio. Why the constant reminder of the girl's lack of messages in the past 2578 days? That seems like it would cause some serious issues for her. Really, the whole idea of Mars crashing into the Earth is kind of ridiculous. I would've gone with something else like biological warfare like in Planetarian. Regarding Zergneedsfood's review on the video: + Show Spoiler +Given how the girl has all those wires coming in and out of her in the glorified iron lung, I don't know if it would be possible for the dad to do the same for himself Overall, it really doesn't hold up to scrutiny after looking at it critically, but it's not the worst thing I've ever seen. Feeling a light to decent 3

It doesn't really? Unless you count being background music for a flashback as playing into it.
I also just realized that it was done by A-1, of all studios. Why can't you put this level of effort into your actual fucking shows?

I think I'm going to rewatch Hourou Musuko, the more I've personally become involved with the LGBT comminuty, the more I think it would be good to rewatch it

Scans of Genshiken Niidaime are finally complete.
It was certainly different from the original (perhaps too different), but overall, I still liked it. The new cast was pretty decent. Saki is somehow still the best character despite showing up in roughly two chapters. I guess that's a testament to how great a character she was.
The subject matter was what made the original Genshiken stand out to me. Rather than an sol about otaku, I think it was framed more as an sol about people who happen to be otaku. Niidaime sorta continues the trend with Hato's arc. On the other hand, Madrarame's arc only serves to tie up loose ends from the original, and really didn't explore anything interesting. He also stole time and focus from the new characters for very little gain. It was also far too long for what it was.
At least there's still Spotted Flower.
In any case, if Yonensei and Gonensei are any indication, I'll happily read whatever the mangaka puts out next.

lol, talk about pointing with the finger at others instead of pointing it at oneself first.

Yeah my question wasn't why they still make chatbots in general, to test things out and get a better idea of how they the algorithm they used works in practice. It was rather a rethoric question, why they would implement an obsiously unsophisticated technology in a commercial product. Your second answer to that is correct of course but imho it shouldn't be that way.
//watched Shelter now. I really liked the visuals. The Dreamworld was very well visualised and the animation/cuts were well done. I disliked the rest though, even the music. Going to read that infamous znf review now.

Very amusing, but definitely a lot harsher.

Sure but being told to kill yourself on /a/ means something very different than being told to kill yourself on MAL, IMHO. On /a/ you know it's 99% tongue in cheek, on MAL however, i'm not so sure that it's a joke at all and it just comes across as genuinely worrisome that someone would write that.
YMMV.

I thought that review was good. The video probably doesn't deserve a 1 and a 2-4 rating would be fairer I guess but that's not the point here.
Also read through some salt on your page. Nice. At times like these I always ask myself if those people, that send you death threats etc. with appalling spelling and gramma, are just trolls or really that stupid. For example, I thought this one must be a troll for sure:
"so you are a troll who shits on every good anime i dont think you understod the hided mesege betwen shelter wich is really easy to understand so if you could please kill yourself and i mean it"
Then I took a look at their profile and wasn't so sure anymore.
To be fair, some decent points were made as well. For example some seemingly hypocritical ratings. However, that doesn't make your review any less true.

I agree with pretty much everything ZNF says in the review, at the end of the day I'd still give it a 4 myself because (pleb incomming) the animation WAS nice and it's a (big?) part of it no matter how shitty the story was. Yes it shit the bed with the story but I can say I've seen worse.
But the comments are pretty funny. I also really enjoyed reading ZNFs review. I knew he knows how to write but damn

The point is that's the only thing going for it. Moe in general is about presenting us with characters that galvanize our sympathies, but there is often something more to it. Not related to moe, but in something like House of Cubes, which is a really nice short, an old man with no really attractive physical qualities manages to make us emotionally engaged to his plight on top of being creative.
There's a very similar theme of loneliness and memory in both, but I feel like House of Cubes comes out infinitely more engaging and thoughtful because it doesn't rely on the crux of the physical appearance of its main character to carry our sympathies and affection.
To say that Aria is similar would be to miss the, I don't know, the 60+ chapters of development. I love tons of moe shows, don't get me wrong, but there's a massive difference between liking them because they are moe and hating Shelter because it exemplifies everything I find wrong with abusing moe to the point of being manipulative.
Also that poster in general I've always assumed was a huge sack of shit, so I just memed him until he went away butthurt. ^_^

a 4 is fine. even a 10 if you said that you just rated it based on the animation/visuals/music, because it is really good looking
i'm just being edgy fam :D

Yeah, I agree and I kind of expected you to reply like this. I haven't watched Aria so I can't say whether it's an appropiate example or not (probably not though). I was rather playing at the fact that you gave stuff like K-ON, which is clearly more moe without much substance than anything else, an 8/10. It's more of a tongue-in-cheek comment coming from me though. And yes, House of Cubes was excellent and it's a great example in this occasion. Clearly shows how something like this is done correctly as opposed to Shelter.
|
Oh yea.
K-On is love. K-On is life.
Also, just as a serious response to your tongue in cheek, K-On does not try to present itself as anything more than a moe show IMO. This is legit trying to be some sort of sci-fi tragedy about Worst Dad of the 21st Century.
