Thinking about it, stringed instruments in general seem more common in Asian education - and of the schools I've been through and the ones around it, a school was unlikely to own its own string instruments (although my HS did have a standing bass for the Jazz band) while it was more common for there to be the more expensive brass instruments and larger woodwinds. (This is the only way that two flute players, myself and my neighbor of 5 years, wound up still sitting next to each other while playing the horn and bassoon in our last three years of high school.) Only woodwind and percussion would make me think of a wind ensemble. I think it may be down to budgets and school funding in the long run - not a lot of parents want to pay the high prices for some instruments when many people are starting in our educational system. (Those that still have a music program, at least.) in my experience school bands just go with what they get or what they have. The band in HS I was in had a handful of string instruments and at least where I went to school you're not going to get turned down if you want to join pretty much no matter what you play. Then the conducter has to somehow make it work But then I don't really know bands in school as a place where you "learn" how to play. You can join them for fun if you already know how to play and have some events to play at but they won't teach you how to play an instrument from zero. That might be different in the US/Asia or my school was just weird that way because size and funding of the school should not have been an issue.
Outside of school it obviously was like you said, percussion+brass+wood. Especially if it's not just hobby and you're getting paid for stuff

Showing my age a bit, but at least where I was (northeast US) back in the early 80s, music education was pretty much from first through fourth grades - chorus mostly from first to third, and at the end of third grade there was a presentation and the option for interested students/parents to sign up for instruments. Generally woodwinds, brass, percussion; string instruments were something students generally had to go outside of school to learn. From fourth on through High School, music was an optional choice with the teacher giving instruction at the end of the day in group lessons for the different sections and once a week or so for the full ensemble. High School had an actual class period in the day for students that took "band" or "chorus", as well as after school activities associated with certain sub-groupings (like jazz band). Some parts of class were seasonal (marching band in the fall with a camp at the end of summer, coinciding with football season) and concert band through winter and early spring, then towards a hybrid with both concert and marching during the various holidays starting around March. There was also after-school musicals, in which the music students made up the performing band. I know that even as I was graduating in the mid90s, music and art budgets in general were going down. Outside of school, there were other groups (I was in a brass quintet, some people auditioned for drum and bugle corps or youth symphonic orchestras, audition-gated competitive groups) and the schools themselves had local and regional competitions.
One of the reasons I've enjoyed various parts of Hibike! Euphonium is probably nostalgia over my time in band. One of the teachers I had is even a bit like the female homeroom teacher, although thatteacher had an incredible drive to put us through competitions. Of course, Eupho also has the subtle bits of yuri here and there, and that's nice alongside the music.

Watch it for the memes, because it sounds like /lit/ the anime. I've been senselessly shilling it for a while now.
It's gonna be awful. :D

I wish I knew more about concert bands to contribute to the conversation. I'm a complete noob in the subject. To be clear: I was SHOCKED to find out the saxophone wasn't considered brass. It's a woodwind instrument?

He's one of the most feared former execs for the Port Mafia, so I want to know how and why he got that reputation. If it continues for more than 2-3 episodes, then yeah, it'll get annoying. But fleshing out characters a bit isn't too bad if they keep it short

The "sheet", or whatever you call it in english, that you strap on the mouthpiece is some kind of wood (looked it up, it's reed) and I guess the vibration (?) of that makes the sound, hence woodwind instrument.
Funny sidenote, I once got to try out playing a sax and I was not able to get a tone out of it so that's why there's a questionmark up there
I did play in orchestra/bands for years but really I have no clue about other instruments so I only know how to play trombone. And because trombone is quite unique in how you change pitch I couldn't even just swap around when drunk for shitz and giggles with horns or whatever because "valves, omg, how do they work, what do I have to press for what note"

Yep; it's a woodwind because it's a reed instrument. Similar to how you use you vibrate your lips on a brass mouthpiece to make a tone, you use air and your lips on the mouthpiece to vibrate the reed to cause a tone.
Yeah, trombone is the wild one in the instrumental kingdom; unlike the fingering of the keys on a woodwind (whose fingerings are all more or less the same but might produce different notes depending on the musical key of the instrument) or the valves in brass (same; they're all the same fingerings if sometimes different notes) you've got those slide positions that need to be more or less accurate. Closest you get to that is if you learn to play a natural horn; used to mess with my music teacher in high school by playing an F horn using only my hand in the bell to alter pitch. That does cause some of the tones to be decidedly muted though. I've managed to play notes with just about everything except for the double reed instruments (because those are a pain). The only woodwinds that don't use reeds are the flute family, iirc. Painful sidestory - friend of mine in high school was a huge clarinet guy. Almost always had a reed in his mouth to keep it moist - which he found was really a bad idea when he tripped and landed on his face. He got his reed jammed through his gums under his teeth (OUCH!) and lost a few months worth of practice time.
Anyways, finished all of season one and the OVA for Eupho, and while I'll agree it's not the most amazing anime ever, the music is pretty on point and the girls are cute. The drama even sounds about right for a high school band.

Does anyone think Asuka senpai was too unforgiving? Granted I'm not sure if we know how badly she got fucked over when the 2nd years bounced, but the girl seemed to really want to re-commit with Asuka-senpai's blessing. I don't think she would be so persistent if she wasn't serious. Oh the episode was 45 mins long? no wonder it felt like it was able to cover a lot.

+ Show Spoiler +My thoughts are same as you. I feel this may be one of the cases where men and women differ. The way conflict and emotion around that is handled tends to be quite different. If this was a mainly male class then I think they'd have a tussle, maybe devoid into shouting or even physical altercation then afterwards laugh it out and move forward. Hell I know I've been through dumb shit like that in HS lol.
Asuka and to an extent Reina are excusing their emotions as "logical" when it's really not. If you want the nationals then you need the best people to have the highest chance. The most logical step is if this person is willing and good then use them. It's kind of petty revenge on Asuka's part. She was hurt, betrayed even and now can't look past that to forgive. Life and especially school life is far too short to harbor grudges for long.

There was actually a thread on /lit/ about it like a week ago.
Main character basically encapsulates everything about your generic /lit/ character. Memorizes a lot of titles, wants to use them in daily conversation, doesn't get fazed when she gets BTFO'd by someone who actually knows what she's talking about.
Good shit~

Keijo is, well.. certainly something else. I don't watch ecchi anime so I don't really know what to say

Sometimes it's better to remain silent.

It's the show we all watch but don't speak about. Better that way. Enjoyed in isolation.

Considered watching it at work.
Thought twice.
