I don't understand how anyone can believe in an absolute like this lmao OK so it seems that often media critics conflate media forms with their associated industries often in discussions of adaptations. Although different media have different capacities, most of the value lost in practical terms during adaptations is due to industry constraints instead of media constraints. For example, in an LN to Anime adaptation, the Anime will often have a lower word count, but that is not because Anime as a medium simply cannot sustain such a high word count, but because industry constraints make it too expensive to do so. Really, each rendition of a work, and each work in all of creation, should be assessed on its own merits. Usually this necessitates a holistic context, not an independent one, since humans as beholders are incapable of judging things independently, but let's not get into that. If you take a look at older works with great numbers of renditions, such as a play like Romeo and Juliet, you'll see that there are too many versions with their own merits and flaws that you can't justifiably apply a one-line absolute rule by which to judge them. Each set of actors or content creators brings their own ideas into the imagining, meaning that each product is worth at least cursory assessment before categorizing it as better or worse.

It was him who hyped up NGNL before that aired (iirc?) and we all know how much I loved that show. Between the two and me not having a good first impression that's enough for me o/ I like fantasy adventure... harem just comes with territory. I don't mind amagi novel but it's not fantasy, I mean, the only thing fantasy element does in that show is comedic relief.

Basically, the visual and audio aspect of anime is a very key part of the experience, and ignoring them or trivializing them misses the entire point of them being anime. Similarly, when an anime looks like dog shit, like Sailor Moon Crystal or the full CGI in Knights of Sidonia, complaints about how it looks is all the more valid. If you just want a story and don't care about the other things that make anime what it is, go read a book or something.

Grisai was really meh and I only watched it for the animation/VA of the girls(Sachi ofc), storywise it was a diaster. On the other hand Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-Kun lends itself much better to an anime format and was at the very least just as good as its source material(if not better with Chiyo 's VA).

I love sidonia's visuals. When I first started watching season 1, it was 'different' lol but it grows on you. Add in an interesting story, great characters and setting and it's a masterpiece :D

+ Show Spoiler + I have a feeling Hikigaya helping out solo is going to come back to bite him hard. It's kind of strange that he wants to help out with the Christmas event. I wonder what his motivation might be.

He got her into the mess so he has to help clean it up and also, i think he wants to get away from the service club since to him, the tension in the air can explode any moment. While 8man might be cynical, he is still quite honorable and moral. I really don't think he has any motivation besides the fact that he really does like helping people.
