It feels like every small detail gets dragged maybe half a second longer than it should have been. Makes the episodes feel a lot "duller" than they should. edit: Cross Ange 19 - Pretty decent. Nothing really new but nice confirmation. I do find it funny how people keep saying there are "plot twists" when there haven't been any twists for awhile. Guess people are really bad at picking up foreshadowing even when it's shoved into their face.
+ Show Spoiler +Idk man, are you telling me Jill wanting the embryo dick was expected
Foreshadowing only works if the scene happens though. Otherwise its a red herring

Jill seems to have this intimate knowledge about Embryo and this intense desire for revenge that no one else has. Pretty classic lover abandonment complex. All the stuff with why Saila/Chris/Ersha switched was obvious from the Dragon ep.

Finished Steins;Gate, probably the best anime I have ever seen.
|
Finished YuYu Hakusho just now.
+ Show Spoiler +Overall I think it was decent. But I expected more from it. It was often mentioned as a timeless classic, intelligent show etc. pp. But in the end I got a rather generic old-school shounen. The humor was great and some characters were really good but the plot was kind of weak. Especially in the end there were a lot of plot holes. There also was too much fighting for my taste. I think that's why I enjoyed the last arc the most: Because it had the least fights and more backround stories. The fighting itself was boring most of the times. Same punches over and over again and then someone pulls some ridiculous stuff out of his sleeve and wins. Music, dub and animation all have been pretty enjoyable although I had the feeling the animation began to lack towards the ending. The series also had general "battle-shounen-problems" like stupid one liners in drawn out fights, no development for side characters, mostly the stupid evil villians (all but in the last arc), constant ass-pulls etc. The conclusion was fine imho. I wish that there had been a bit more to what Yusuke did in the past year and a conclusion to Hiei (I don't like how open his story was in the end), though.
In the end I'm not really sure why I watched it all the way to the end. There have been a lot of episodes where I was incredibly bored (especially by long-ass fights). But somehow I enjoyed it enough to watch it until the end so it must have been fine I guess?

I'm not sure if you can call a shounen show that defined countless shounen tropes "generic". Dragonball and YuYu Hakusho defined what shounens were and are.
|
Yea I'm not sure what you were expecting going in. YuYu Hakusho IS Shounen. Well it and Dragonball. Reading your updates about this past weeks has given the impression you thought it's something else and don't particularly enjoy the shounen genre in the first place.
|
With "generic" I meant it's like the others. I thought it would have more approaches like HxH with tactical fights, good plot/character development and interesting villians. The reviews I read all pointed towards that. That's all.
I'm not a particular fan of shounen, that's for sure. I dropped One Piece a long time ago because I got too bored of all the ridiculously drawn-out fights and power-ups. I can handle them if there is an interesting setting, good characters and development/plot. For all the shit Fairy Tail recieves I think it did well in all three departments. But those are the only long Shounen I ever watched. I only decided to watch Yu Yu Hakusho because of the premise of delivering something different. I never would have thought about starting something like Dragon Ball for example (although I have seen some episode back when I was a kid).

I dunno Yu Yu Hakusho, but I dismissed Fairy Tail long ago. The anime sucks in my opinion. One Piece would be godlike if the pacing was better. But since they don't wanna make fillers they just make the episodes crazily slow and sort of boring. Especially the current Arc is moving soo slow. Still never gonna drop it, too interested in a lot of stuff concerning the world of One Piece.

I stopped watching FT and OP animes except on rare occasions because I read their sources. Although FT anime once it restarted seemed to be a lot better then it was. OP is OP and is awesome but yea its drawn out a lot in the anime.
Yu Yu Hakusho is super old but I really enjoyed it (one of the 1st shows I watched). The Dragon Ball source literally started before I was born. Those 2 are pretty seminal in the genre.

It doesn't really matter though. It doesn't make it look better it just makes the others look worse.

It kind of does matter His point is, if you had watched YYH when it was released, it would have been pretty fresh, new, unique, etc. But yeah, 20+ years later, it looks kinda stale and boring, as there's been a million shows that took what made that show popular and re-hashed em.
Basically, it's a 20 year old show that was "something different" for it's time. At least that's how the argument looks for me. Personally I think it's as Shounen as Shounen gets, and I don't particularly care for Shounen.

If the complaint is "I've seen this a million times before" and "this is generic", your complaint is without merit. If you just don't like shounen, then its like, w/e, not sure why you watched it.

The only reason you should watch classic animes is to see how they affected the current anime scene. Expecting them to be "fresh, different, and unique" is a bit awk when they influenced so much shows that came after them.

of course it makes sense. That's why foreshadowing exists. To make things not an asspull. That doesn't necessarily mean that foreshadowing make things super predictable tho.

Yu Yu Hakusho is fine. Of course it's nothing new. If you want something new you should probably watch Fate Zero or something.

Just started watching Junketsu no Maria yesterday. Seems like a fun little show.
|
Yui is my sensei
Junketsu no Maria is weird.
|
junketsu no maria is entertaining for sure

Maria is one of the most impressively historically accurate things around, given most manga/anime can't even get Japan's own history correct. It does make one wonder what Ishikawa was thinking writing this after Moyashimon though.
