Its a monthly manga and it doesn't seem like it will end in the near future so if they don't want to boil it down to the bones they won't be able to cover it all anyway in 1 cour. ok, makes sense. Hopefully there's a season two then.

I'm just curious...am I the only one that doesn't even look at genre when determining whether or not to watch a show/if i like a show? I usually just read the description, then watch the first few episodes, and can tell pretty quickly if i'm gonna like it or not. but to be frank, there's not a whole lot i haven't liked that i've watched so there is that.
I watch every first episode. If a show doesn't have a good hook in the first episode it's probably shit. Exceptions being VN/LN/Game/Novel/Manga adaptations where I read up a bit and if the first ep is decent I watch it. I'm watching 3 shows so far this season which is a record for the past 2 years or so. I used to be like that, but I passed up on Haruhi doing that, so I stick more to 3 episode tests.

Kou is really my ray of straightness in Free. The show's nothing without her.
Edit: Nah actually it's the club advisor, how could I forget about her :'(

main reason to watch Free is for the animation and OST.
the rest is passable for watchable.

Back before the "Anime Seasons meets Introduction to Economics" discussion, a few people here and on IRC asked why I dropped Toyko Ghoul. I imagine most of you don't care, but for those that did, I will walk you through the Episode in Sentenal-Vision: + Show Spoiler +So we start off the episode and Hanakana is eating a ton of people, and getting a major hardon doing it. Shes also using her slut voice. Then Jason walkins in, and tries to fight her with a wrench. But she takes his wrench and throws it off a building. This was the intro, and at this part I was like "what, so this is like B Horror Movie villains vs Hanakana, the anime?" I'm already not impressed. Then it moves on to what the actual episode is about.
We have probably the most bland main character I've seen in a while, talking to his friend about a girl. Hes like "Well, I like her, perhaps I should ask her on a date to the book store..." And his friend is like "No, what the hell is wrong with you, a book store?" The conversation continues "Well, in that case, perhaps I could take her to JapanMcDonalds, and we could get a cheese burger, since I rather like cheese burgers". Hes then accused of being gay. I forget if it was his friend who did this, or if it was me, but at any rate, it happens. His friend flirts with some ugly girl, and then an even uglier meganeko comes in, and hes like "omgomgomg thats here!" and she opens her mouth, and its fucking Hanakana. At this point its fucking obvious whats going to happen, at least for the immediate future.
So, he asks her on a date to the book store, and they go. I bet she was just looking at him and licking her lips the whole time, filling the guy's head with ideas. She plays the scared girl to get him to walk her home, and then she tries to eat him. She like eats his liver or something. And shes back in her whore voice now. Then a building falls on her. And then some doctor thinks its a good idea to scrap her for parts and rebuild MC with her.
So now, because she was a ghoul, so is he now! Apparently the doctor swapped his tounge and eyeball out too. He tries to eat his favorite cheese burger, but hes a ghoul now, and its not made of Soylent Green, so he cries. At this point they reveal that ghouls can't be hurt by knives, so he tries to stab himself, but it doesn't work. Apparently physical damage only works if its a building that falls on them, or a scalpel when getting scrapped for parts. Also somewhere in this time he thinks about eating a Loli but doesn't.
So he goes out on an emo walk, and sees another Ghoul, and others start coming out and they fight and kill each other and its like a bad 90s OVA. And then the surviving ugly girl from earlier force feeds him people.
So, what do we have here? We have a bland protagonist who gets rebuilt with Hanakana, and now hes emo and wants to eat people except he doesn't but he really does. Hanakana met the fate of the other two Gundam Mk2s from Zeta Gundam, but you know shes going to be back, somehow, and its gonna be stupid. I can't even latch onto tits in this anime because all the girls are ugly. So I'll pass.

That's kind of like, the definition of pessimistic (tending to see the worst aspect of things or believe that the worst will happen.) But i will give you + Show Spoiler +It makes little sense that the building would kill her, but they can withstand knives and stuff...also, the transplant of her organs into the MC only make sense if they're a positive match (which is usually highly unlikely)...and the fact that her organs were in good enough shape after having a building fall on her to work in a transplant. BUT i will argue that it's possible that only the outside of the body can withstand things like knives and if the building was enough to penetrate that, then it's possible to get at the organs. But that just brings up, how were they undamaged after all that?

But honestly stuff like that is besides the point of me thinking the anime has no potential. And this means its going to force feed emo shit down your throat, in a similar fashion as to what happened at the end of the episode. Why should I give a shit about this little bastard's troubles?

Sent hasn't seen the pit of zombie manga pessimism that is sankarea, that's why he is so pessimistic about tokyo ghouls.

You make some good points about Tokyo Ghoul and I'll give you that but + Show Spoiler +I think the struggle between accepting his new self and still clinging to his old self could be really interesting to watch if done right. It's true that the 'organs are still safe' and 'how did they sew him up' parts don't make sense when you consider that they can't be hurt by knives but maybe they used some other way to transplant the organs. I dunno, it's a futuristic anime so let your imagination run wild lol.
For the MC, I have to say he has guts to ask someone out. In most cases (other genres though), the MC is too afraid to make a move, let alone talk to the one they love Also, I liked how cunning and devious Hanakana was in her role. She 'wanted him' and drew him in using what he enjoyed and apparently her looks lol. Anyways, no guarantee as to how it'll turn now and I have no experience in the genre so can't say much otherwise

The conversation continues "Well, in that case, perhaps I could take her to JapanMcDonalds, and we could get a cheese burger, since I rather like cheese burgers".
We have a bland protagonist who gets rebuilt with Hanakana, and now hes emo and wants to eat people. Hanakana met the fate of the other two Gundam Mk2s from Zeta Gundam, but you know shes going to be back, somehow, and its gonna be stupid. I can't even latch onto tits in this anime because all the girls are ugly. So I'll pass. Ahem + Show Spoiler +I'm glad i'm not as pessimistic as you Sent...If I was, I might just have to kill myself + Show Spoiler +I mean that with as much love as possible Hey, I'm very optimistic. I watched allll of Gundam SEED Destiny, Valvrave, and Code Geass. What am I being pessimistic about, exactly? Because I honestly don't see much good that could possibly come from how the first episode was setup. lol. Unless I'm mistaken, you continued watching Valrave despite thinking it's pretty bad because you wanted to shit on it after you finished watching lol XD You make some good points about Tokyo Ghoul and I'll give you that but + Show Spoiler +I think the struggle between accepting his new self and still clinging to his old self could be really interesting to watch if done right.
Anyways, no guarantee as to how it'll turn now and I have no experience in the genre so can't say much otherwise This is true, but I was optimistic on Valvrave up until the rape. Or maybe before the rape, IDK. Anyway...
+ Show Spoiler +If they couldn't use knives and needles when doing the operation, shouldn't that have been a red-flag of "Oh wait, we are making a monster here, maybe we should stop"? The anime doesn't really seem futuristic at all at this point.
So far I'm seeing the only plus as being "Well, at least the main character isn't an oblivious generic Harem MC". I have no faith that they will handle his new struggles well, and plus, there are countless anime out there that have done the 'Main Character's life turned upside down, must now deal' before. Its nothing new. I mean you mentioned Valvrave already, so you already know whats going to happen in this one.

I agree. I almost wasn't gonna say it, but that made me laugh.

Argenvollen is okay. Not every day you see a mecha anime where mechs get taken down by Machine Gun nests and tanks. Biggest complaint is that I really don't like the main mech. Too skinny and busy. I much prefer the blocky tanky mechs. It was funny seeing him run into a tree, as well.

+ Show Spoiler +What I meant was that in the anime, they don't use those tools anymore. I dunno, but maybe they use a laser to cut a hole in the skin, transplant it and then use some form of energy to close it up (word isn't coming to mind unfortunately). Well, I dunno if it's futuristic, will have to wait and see, just guessing on my part.
Well, you make a good point though I'll give them the benefit of the doubt
