The Movie covers the entire first season, but it makes everything that was good about the first season better, while at the same time removing everything that was wrong with the first season. The 1st Movie is probably the best mahou shoujo animation I've ever seen.

A really big YES to Haruhi Suzumiya. . I really enjoyed the show has a very "interesting" female lead and the MC is a normal guy with curious mind so he is easily understandable. The plot is sci-fi and talks a lot about trivial things that doesn't normally gets highlight at all. The show is very popular i think it's LN has the most sales of all time i remember reading in good reads that it was on par in terms of sales of Harry Potter series idk about if it's legit though.
You will either love haruhi or hate her. Usually the male majority worship her and from my experience my female friends fucking hate the character lol.
I can't really vow that the show is very good in general since it has it's flaws especially the weird order of episodes but i know that the movie is really really really good.
Pros: + Despite being a high school anime it does not have the commonly annoying "are you ok senpai" or "have you eaten your lunch". + Haruhi is a GOD + They don't talk about feelings a lot which is great so they talk about the most random shit ever! + Fanservice episodes are great and some are really random ! + The quality is not terrible
Cons - Characters have no sense of shame that it is awkward for you at times - Haruhi is a bitch - Since they don't talk about feelings a lot they talk about the most random shit ever! - Plot development is scattered - At some point the show will fucking troll you so badly you have to be Bigfan to endure. You'll know what i mean. - Some episodes are just so fucking random it's bad (movie) - A lot more
There are 3 ways of watching the show and i recommend you watch it in Broadcast Order it is much more enjoyable than the chronological order surprisingly.
There i tried to endorse the show in a non-biased way since it's one of my favorites.
I actually went out and bought the 1st LN because it actually is translated and sold in English (I guess because its so popular). From what I know of the anime it seems they went a bit weird with the it and the broadcast order (plus the endless eight thing lol).

Do watch second series (A's) though. The 2nd movie was decent but not amazing like first, and they removed a lot of good stuff from the series.
Ragz has the right about it. Before the 1st Movie came out, A's was like the best regarded Nanoha series. The A's movie didnt do it justice. It looked nice, but they messed up too much stuff IMO. As for StrikerS, its pretty definitive to the series' current tone and focus. And its pretty good in its own right.
StrikerS is the like 26 episodes or something, with the first two seasons being like 13 each, which comes up to be one of its problems. StrikerS has some pacing problems. Would have been much better if it was shorter. However, it does has a lot of cool parts to it that make up for it, plus has the best setting.
Yeah....Nanana is awful. Tensai comes back for literally thirty seconds to give us plot that I don't want. This show needs to just give me three more episodes of Tensai moe and it might be worth it.
Brave Phoenix so underappreciated D: Eternal Blaze and Bright Stream so good though. Even Romancers Neo was really good too if you wanna count A's game. Not too much of a fan of Sacred Force.

Never watched Chihayafuru or Mahou Shoujo. Haruhi was ok though I still need to finish it so it'll be a while before I get back to it lol. Noragami has an interesting storyline and great characters, would recommend it. Nourin is mostly over the top humour. Reminds me of Seitokai Yakuindomo in some ways since it's not afraid to put it out there lol. Also reminds me of D-frag. I would say it's worth a try though keep in mind that 'the story' is rather weak and it's more for the comedic and stupid moments than anything else ^^
made some decent headway. It's not bad so far, lots of drama and humour. At times, it does feel a bit forced but I'm enjoying it overall. Hope Minami wins lol. That whole episode with the wedding though, funny but also bizzare as to why they even pulled such an act. Only thing that I think needs more work is the story telling. I went in thinking they'll be focusing on challenging the other classes for the duration of the anime but it turns out they have a life outside of battle, who knew?
