School Days is notable because the shock end comes out of nowhere. Elfen lied's just gory. Higurashi you could maybe make an argument for the first time around. Past that, the surprises are expected to a degree. Mirai Nikki isn't that bad at all.

Overall it's still an enjoyable series. Though I suppose enjoyable's probably not the right word. The cast is pretty good. They're flawed, but not to the point that I hate them. They come off as being pretty human most of the time. That, imo is what makes the manga work at all. The mangaka just managed to hit the right balance with the chars, and everything worked out from there. That the art compliments the material is just a bonus. You could at least somewhat sympathize at times with Lucy but it does become very hard Lol. Basically every character is insane, insane and cruel, or has severe severe psychological trauma. There is just horrible things happening all around. I think only the cousin is the one who was normal.
Its bad when one of the least tragic back stories involves child sexual abuse and abondonment lol.

I remember going through the anime then hearing about how the manga is better etc etc. I read the 1st chapter and saw the 1st episode played out again yet somehow worse and said "Nope". Dropped then just read summaries :D

It is better in that it fits the story better then the anime end. But it makes Elfen Lied even more depressing then it was in the anime lol.
