I just checked out, almost nothing is licensed in France on CrunchyRoll. I remembered having wanted to take a premium account a few years ago and being disappointed because none of the stuff I like was broadcasted I've watched literally 2 shows (of mediocre quality mind you: Nobuna no Yabou and Kamisama Dolls) from what they provide since Winter 2011, and I've watched more than 10 times more in those 2 years, so not really worth it for me.
+ Show Spoiler +For reference, here's what I can watch on CR for Winter 2013: http://imgur.com/zJKtJJrNot really inspiring to say the least. I watch none of those regularly. I don't think I'm looking at the wrong list because on most anime pages (I stumbled upon Kotoura-san's page by chance), I have a nice : Availability Information Sorry, due to licensing limitations, videos are unavailable in your region.

Obviously you can't get all anime legitimately, but when you can it will support anime a little bit. Did not know about hulu restricting access to those outside the US though. It's a bit of a pain. And you've hit it spot on really. If you can support what you like, you should. That's all there is to it really. Not sure if this is the right place to ask too, but does anyone know when the next Hidamari Sketch manga is coming out? At least I assume it'll be out before the OVA that's planned. Hidamari releases monthly. There is no chapter next month though.

Zzzz... Yeah, I'm sure his free trial really helps them financially too. If you want to support the anime, then purchase Japanese merchandise and shit directly.
Didn't CR originally do the exact same thing that you were criticizing torrenting for? Also, do you have any proof that they use CR's subs? There's tons of subgroups out there. Some may use CR subs, though I seriously doubt it based off of how different each one is. Plus the fact that there are subbed torrents for all of the anime CR doesn't have should be proof that subgroups do their own subbing.
And why would you actually say all of those things from me simply suggesting the guy check out a torrent site? I cannot even believe that you came along saying something that blatantly rude and then act like you are some rational person.
My biggest complaint for CR was that it simply did not have every anime. In fact, many of my favorites do not have any official or "legal" English subs, so it would be impossible for me to view it otherwise. No one is really losing any customer in that situation because they do not have official subs for it. It's POSSIBLE they will 2 years from now, but I generally don't count on it.
I want you to know I spend plenty supporting my favorite animes, so whatever.
@ZenithM That's pretty obnoxious. Looks like CR isn't that great after all. I'm sure no one would mind if you downloaded a torrent for a subbed anime you were interested in though. You might even be able to get it en Francais!

Wasn't sure if I had to spoiler that either, but I'll be safe.

Finished Zetsuen No Tempest + Show Spoiler +Really liked it, Shakespeare quotes made me pike up Shakespeare again. First few episodes seemed like some random fighting anime, but the story developed nicely. Things got crazy, but basically same level crazy that shakespeare plays go to. Loved the aika flashbacks

Blargh your post literally commanded the reader to get ALL (verbatim) of their stuff from nyaa, ie from piracy. Some people rightly feel that you should consider other options first before resorting to piracy.

French fansubs are just usually awful, it's been a long time since I've decided to stay away from those :D Maybe English ones are equally as awful but I'm not a native speaker so at least it doesn't bother me as much.

Well yeah, I did use "all", but it's not my fault subgroups do way better than CR. Whether you like piracy or not, getting your anime from Crunchy roll isn't going to support your anime any more than maybe a few dollars? Plus, they rarely have good animes, so it's not even worth paying for in the first place. I'm fine with people disliking piracy, it's totally understandable, but when the other suggestion (CrunchyRoll) isn't even good, I see no reason why someone would become aggressive over it. But, due to how random the quality of anime is, I'd actually torrent any anime before spending money on it. And like I said, if you like an anime, just buy directly (if you can) or just buy general merchandise from them.
@ZenithM Yeah, I bet they do, haha. Some subs are good, while others are terrible. A lot of animes (especially the satires/comedies) rely on good translation for the viewer to understand it. Obviously, Japanese can understand the references, but it's a lot harder to convey a Japanese reference to English people.

Yeah man, "Meh, crunchyroll" and then pointing someone straight to nyaa is totally supporting the industry. Clap fucking clap. My knowledge comes firsthand from more than 10 years of fansubbing and being involved in the community, and if I could get aers to upload the picture of the daemon I would should you how different groups rip CR's subs. Obviously for series and countrys that don't have licensing is fine, but it is fucking infuriating to see people link straight to torrents and say shit like "meh, crunchyroll" because there are a bunch of fucking idiots with that attitude and they are one of the biggest problems to legitimate licensing and publishing of anime and manga internationally.

You have no clue what you are talking about, lol. The translations taken from official streams are both accurate (enough such that tons of "fansubbers" just rip and edit them for different levels of weeabooness), and extremely fast. There isn't really any reason to complain about CR. Actually I take that back, I guess if you want to be a stubborn hipster, there is reason to complain about CR.

Paid services should be just as good as nyaa imo, or better. A lot of the stuff I really like can't be found from nyaa either. Those random paid anime sellers just put pretty shit shows usually and you are very restricted assuming you don't take a step outside of it's prepertuar. Maybe you should just email your thanks and give money directly if you want to support industry WITH MONEY.

? CR has 1080p and their subbers are people that started working in fansubbing in the late nineties to mid 00s to put out quality subs as opposed to the usual shit subs that license and publishing companys up until a few years ago put out, that generation of subbers is the reason you see fansubbing at all.
|
The only reason I see myself choosing some fansubs over CR is signs / typesetting, though the shows that really need it aren't that common anyway. I find that I really don't miss / notice a lack of OP/ED translations / fancy karaoke, and even then, a lot of sub groups don't even do it anymore, so it's rather moot as well.

I gotta say, CR subs seem really good and professional.

I don't know why I keep doing this, but you know us stubborn hipsters, can't stop fighting man. Okay, so, let's look at CR here. I'll just use 3 random animes from my list. Sayonara Zetsubou - a great comedy that is full of references and need VERY good translation. But after searching our beloved CR, I could not find it! Ohno! Tatami Galaxy - one of the only good slice-of-life romances made. I imagine translating the narration can be annoying since it's so incredibly fast, but subgroups did quite well! Unfortunately, it's nowhere to be found on CR. A shame! Mushishi - a very interesting supernatural fantasy anime, and also one which is quite popular. It is not actually filled with that much speech either. It's too bad CR doesn't have it.
Now, CR may have Naruto or Bleech, and many other REALLY popular ones subbed, but it lacks SO many others. I do not think that any of the material CR does is bad, or anything, I just do not see why anyone would use it. I literally picked 3 random animes out of my mind and searched for them on CR. But, OMG, they weren't there. So, you know what I did? I went and torrented them. After finding out how good Sayonara and Mushishi were, I -HAD- to buy some merchandise/DVDs for them, because I loved both series quite a bit. I just recently finished Tatami Galaxy (guess it wasn't that random since it was clearly on my mind) but really liked it. I knew it'd be good since it was by the same guy as Kaiba, which was an amazing anime. I -HAD- to buy the wicked soundtrack for Kaiba, but could never find it. But, I DID come across a DVD for it! So there you go.
So, not only do subgroups have to do the subtitles themselves for animes that never got subbed, but they do a really great job for many of the currently airing ones. Maybe they copy CR or someone for the currently airing animes, but there's no way of proving that every group does it.
