If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

SAO isn't that bad, lol. The first half was decently average? I somewhat liked it.
If we want to make a comparison I think I still liked GC better (in a so bad it's good way + the good threads on 4chan and the dropped it every week images), though SAO had better girls and fan service i guess ;-;

SAO isn't that bad. It's a enjoyable meaningless series as long as you are not thinking it's greatest thing since Code Geass R2.

If a show's point of comparison is Code Geass R2 you know there's something horribly wrong with the show.

I was curious to see what was rated top in MAL. And Gintama pops up numerous times. Maybe Ill give that an honest try.

Also I saw FMA: Brotherhood at no. 2. Cant say I dont agree with it, very good anime. One of the easiest 50+ episode shows that I marathoned. That and Cross Game.

Do give gintama an honest try because if you like it you get 250+ eps of great comedy ( a la nichibros).

I guess it just shows the general opinion of everyone on mal. There are a lot of shows with too high scores but when I look at the top 50 list I see a pretty good list of anime, maybe not the top anime, but a good list nonetheless. Honestly the top anime is different for everyone in the end.

For the most part, I agree. I think the top 50 gives you a general idea of what you might want to watch, what most people have thoroughly enjoyed, and at the very least it gives a well diversified set of anime series.

And as far as Code Geass is concerned, yeah, the writing is stupid and uninspiring (I'm referring to R1 btw since I have yet to see R2), and everything in the show is so serious that it almost verges on the comical, but the fact of the matter is that it's fun. For all its stupidity, Code Geass is fun to watch to see robots exploding, people pretending to be intelligent, and pretty nice animation from CLAMP.

There's nothing more to Code Geass beyond that, but I think having fun when watching an anime is one of the most important barometers anyway. It's the same reason why Steins;Gate or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are so high up on the list. It's because they're really fun and entertaining watches. Not everyone can sit through the likes of Texhnolyze or Serial Experiments Lain, contemplate the depth through which the anime approach the human condition and self-identity and say "HOLY SHIT THIS WAS THE BEST THING EVER."

Describing a series as "fun" is kind of pointless because entirely subjective, just as "boring".

I think most people have a lot of trouble distinguishing between entertainment and quality. Entertainment is so subjective and pretty close to being 100% opinionated simply due to different ways of thinking and looking for different things in anime. But too often people equate entertaining to quality and shoot out claims like "SAO is the greatest anime since R2, just look at those sales!" And when that claim is challenged, they are unable to form any concrete arguments because in reality, they just found it entertaining and haven't really thought about the quality of the writing, or convinced themselves the writing was good because it was entertaining. There's also an issue of people just preferring dumb fun over good writing. R2 provided hilarious "plot twists" every week five minutes and people loved it. It doesn't matter if the writing was atrocious because in the end, people liked it. Then these people who don't care to watch good stories try to argue about quality when the truth of the matter is they don't actually care about quality and are mistaking something fun for something good.

People tend to rank stuff based on pure emotional connections, which is fine by itself, but they are unable to objectively determine how good/bad the writing may be which leads to really dumb arguments about popularity indicating quality. Personally, LoGH isn't even in my top 5 anime but I still consider it vastly superior to everything in said top 5. I guess people don't want to admit they liked bad stuff, but I've seen a lot of trash and been entertained by a lot of trash. It's still trash, and I won't deny that.

I think it's still too objectively early to evaluate if Tamako Market will flop too.

Also, it's not pointless if the argument captures 90% of the reason why people like Code Geass. I mean, yes, you can like it because you think it's high quality well written anime but then you're pretty much kidding yourself, so for all intents and purposes people like it because it's super fun and exciting.

Just curious for the people who liked Serial Experiment Lain. What did you think was special about it? And I'm not asking to really argue or disagree with anyone. Just curious what others thought about it. I'm mostly neutral about the show itself but seeing Znf's post about it made me wonder what others saw in it.

I am too lazy to read the novel.

Just a reminder that everything that happens after the anime ends is better than what was animated in FMP.

Its all the rage because of self-insert MC into a generic MMO, complete with a harem that is lead by a Mary Sue, with a decent budget behind it all.

I thought it was a pretty thought provoking work. I enjoyed the themes of identity and a lot of existential motifs that kept popping up, along with the concept of what it means to be alive, the blurs between reality and the net world. It's far from being my favorite anime, and I must say that I didn't enjoy it as much as others might have, but it was some good food for thought.

At the very least, as an anime that was airing when the Internet was really starting to kick off, Lain was hitting at a lot of key themes associated with the Internet that we're dealing with today, and that in itself is pretty impressive.

Ah I actually didn't factor when it was made. I just checked when it was made right now and didn't know it was that old. It actually does put it in perspective more knowing that.
