There are a lot of shows with too high scores but when I look at the top 50 list I see a pretty good list of anime, maybe not the top anime, but a good list nonetheless. Honestly the top anime is different for everyone in the end.

Honestly the top anime is different for everyone in the end. For the most part, I agree. I think the top 50 gives you a general idea of what you might want to watch, what most people have thoroughly enjoyed, and at the very least it gives a well diversified set of anime series. And as far as Code Geass is concerned, yeah, the writing is stupid and uninspiring (I'm referring to R1 btw since I have yet to see R2), and everything in the show is so serious that it almost verges on the comical, but the fact of the matter is that it's fun. For all its stupidity, Code Geass is fun to watch to see robots exploding, people pretending to be intelligent, and pretty nice animation from CLAMP. There's nothing more to Code Geass beyond that, but I think having fun when watching an anime is one of the most important barometers anyway. It's the same reason why Steins;Gate or Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood are so high up on the list. It's because they're really fun and entertaining watches. Not everyone can sit through the likes of Texhnolyze or Serial Experiments Lain, contemplate the depth through which the anime approach the human condition and self-identity and say "HOLY SHIT THIS WAS THE BEST THING EVER."

People tend to rank stuff based on pure emotional connections, which is fine by itself, but they are unable to objectively determine how good/bad the writing may be which leads to really dumb arguments about popularity indicating quality. Personally, LoGH isn't even in my top 5 anime but I still consider it vastly superior to everything in said top 5. I guess people don't want to admit they liked bad stuff, but I've seen a lot of trash and been entertained by a lot of trash. It's still trash, and I won't deny that.

Describing a series as "fun" is kind of pointless because entirely subjective, just as "boring". I think it's still too objectively early to evaluate if Tamako Market will flop too. Also, it's not pointless if the argument captures 90% of the reason why people like Code Geass. I mean, yes, you can like it because you think it's high quality well written anime but then you're pretty much kidding yourself, so for all intents and purposes people like it because it's super fun and exciting.

Its all the rage because of self-insert MC into a generic MMO, complete with a harem that is lead by a Mary Sue, with a decent budget behind it all. On February 20 2013 04:32 ragz_gt wrote: What? And I'm not asking to really argue or disagree with anyone. Just curious what others thought about it. I'm mostly neutral about the show itself. I thought it was a pretty thought provoking work. I enjoyed the themes of identity and a lot of existential motifs that kept popping up, along with the concept of what it means to be alive, the blurs between reality and the net world. It's far from being my favorite anime, and I must say that I didn't enjoy it as much as others might have, but it was some good food for thought. At the very least, as an anime that was airing when the Internet was really starting to kick off, Lain was hitting at a lot of key themes associated with the Internet that we're dealing with today, and that in itself is pretty impressive.
