LOL I knew that happened with a friend with Kaleido Star. He was going to drop out med school but that show pushed him through.

People can interpret anime or see the same series in so many different ways. One person might take a dump on one, while another might get truly inspired by that same one. I have a friend who, after watching Angel Beats, got inspired, played really well at a piano competition, and subsequently won first place for the first time in his life lol.

Agreed!
FMAB actually inspired me alot, and which is mainly why I gave it a 10 That scene where the two Elric brothers burn their own house so that they can't come back is a powerful image and struck hard into me! I tried to explain to my coworkers why I was leaving with that scene, but not all of them understood ^^
Much like Father Goriot (A french novel by Balzac : Le père Goriot). although the story was meh, part of it really caught me, and I'd say it defined me who I am today.
Most of the animes that I have rated 9-10 on MAL really had an impact on me (my personality, my view on life, my view on politics/stuff). And I think that's the wonderful thing about anime, music, movie, books... everyone see them differently ^^

I dont recall it to well but the amount of "ganbare" was too much for me..

I loved Katanagatari, gave it 10/10, even though I know there were a lot of potential flaws. >_>
|
People are allowed to unconditionally love an anime even though it has flaws. Hence, why I gave Fairy Tail a 10/10.
On the other hand. Other shows I gave a 10, I felt like were flawless in their own respects: 5cm Per Second and Tonari Kaibutsu.

I think the one show that stuck with me the longest was the Aria series. It was just a combination of the time in my life when I watched it and how I was feeling at that point. As a result, its one of the few shows I'd rate 10/10, despite knowing it has flaws, I just can't really judge it objectively. The impact it had on me just skews my perception of the show beyond that.

Well said. This is exactly how I felt with FT.

Does anyone happen to know the voice actor of Mary Clarissa Christie in Shikkoku no Sharnoth? Familiar feeling, really really good. Couldn't find it despite some googling.

Eh.
Personally I think the barrier between a 9 and a 10 shouldn't so easy to walk over. One doesn't need to give an anime a 10 just because it's a favourite, why throw objectivity straight out the door?
I liked things like Kaiji, Monster and FMA Original (which i gave 9) more than I liked Planetes or Trust and Betrayal (which I gave 10) and I'd rec the former 3 without any hesitation to almost anyone, but I really can't say with a straight face that they are worthy of a 10/10 score. They just have either too many small flaws, or one big one. Doesn't mean I can't have it as a favourite though. Not saying you cannot give a favourite a 10/10 though, just think certain people are too easy to press the 10/10 masterpiece confetti button.
This wierd discussion aside, I started watching Tasogare Otome x Amnesia. The anime itself is so far kinda interesting after 4 eps, but holy shit that OP. That god damn OP. I take back what I said from the 2012 review, this is easily best OP 2012 imo.

I look forward to your post after you finish it, lol.

Uta/Eca, I have a question about Horizon plot: + Show Spoiler +In Season 1, when Motonobu blew up Mikawa, do we know why he did that at this point? If so, what is it? I figured it was just because the dude was crazy, but is there any other reason given thus far? n/m Uta answered on IRC

Because it's art. There is no such thing as objectivity.

I only wish there was more DO YOU EVER FIND OUT IF ITS HER AT THE GATE? I think it's. But I don't remember anything :D. You should read manga. It continues little afterwards (its not long). But it's very good.

I really like first three lines of OP, but just those three lines.

For the most part with respect to taste it is. If it isnt then I'd say your lying to yourself and trying to guard how you feel about stuff because other people might not like it as much and being objective is as an easy excuse.
10 for me is I'll get up and watch a random episode from anywhere and enjoy it, there arent really any shows "objectively like that. Just ones I like.
But meh whatever makes you "objectively." sleep well at night.
