The only thing Magi really has in common with Arabian Nights are character names...

Only Flame alchemy comes to mind which I found awesome because he is basically igniting the nitrogen/water with the oxygen in the air.
If you haven't seen FMA brotherhood, i'd highly recommend watching that. It is a large improvement over the original.

That's good enough for me. Perhaps 'heavily' wasn't the right word in this context, I suppose.
I have a question regarding To-Love-Ru and Da Capo. Is it necessary to watch the first season to understand what is going on? Based on what I gathered from MAL, the first season of To-Love-Ru was mostly filler episodes and didn't really have a storyline since it didn't follow the manga.
So is it okay to start from the 2nd season or should I still watch the first season? And if so, do I have to watch the whole first season? I'm not really in the mood for filler episodes.
Also, for Da Capo, the original season seems kind of old and so I'm guessing the animation won't be that good. It seems like each Da Capo are relatively independent of each other?
Well it's still not Yubisaki Milktea weird yet (Though Rika has potential)

They both are continues story, but you don't really necessary need previous story for it. You are not watching it for the story anyway.

If you watch the first few episodes of the first season (introduction of the characters), and the OVAs that take place after season one (introducing Lala's sisters), then you should be set to go into season 2.
And To-love ru is clearly all about the plot guys, comon now.

Original is wayyyyy better than Brotherhood. Though since he couldn't appreciate the alchemy of original he might like the boring shounen-style alchemy in Brotherhood.

Dont worry buddy. I use words out of context all the time. And I never get away with it x_O
