If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

EDIT
By that I mean non-shit, more mature slice of life.

I concur. No more teenage slice of lifes. That's been overplayed.

I remember seeing something about the collapse of the anime industry in Japan. Well not collapse, but it referenced the low number of new series coming out lately. It was especially pointing at the decrease in those teenage slice of lifes or shows like that :3. I wish I could find the article again.

That's an exaggeration IMO - they said it back in 1996 before Eva came out, and they've been saying it for every single year since then. The industry waxes and wanes, but I have a feeling it's going to be around for a while as long as Japanese hikkikomori man-children continue to exist.

That being said, I do think most of the shows today are derivative pieces of shit. The archetypes have been established and abused, and the stories feel predictable. What the industry really needs better writing, and I do think they recognize that, since there's been an obvious growing trend towards animating light-novels, but in the end it should be up to the companies themselves to break away from the overused character archetypes and recycled plots to produce something more interesting.

There have been instances in recent memory where I feel that original works have done one or the other rather well, but never both - they always overshoot or undershoot the mark. I liked Higashi no Eden for this very reason, though I feel that in the end the plot started to fall apart.

Of course if it's too far out there the fanbase will turn their noses and sales will drop, but in the long run I think it'd be better for the industry to start to try something different if it wants to grab a larger fanbase. Of course, they could be content to sit around and market the same EVA models to the same people for the next ten years, but I would be sorely disappointed.

At the very least the observation is relevant. I feel like I misread the article in that regard, so I'll have to dig it up again.

In any case, I completely agree with what you're saying. Good plot and characters need to be reintroduced again.

Who is the judge and why? What he is saying isn't regarding 'good' character and plot, but originality, there is a huge difference between the two. While he did touch on overuse of certain archetype and plot, like I said in the previous page, given a wide enough perspective and a good amount of precedence, everything can more or less be placed into rough categories.

Originality is certainly something to be praised, but it doesn't automatically indicate the goodness of something. Originality in plot devices and storytelling can compensate for an overall weak plot, but a well done story with very traditional methods shouldn't really be penalized because it doesn't take on different styles.

So with that out of the way, what defines good plot and characters? Public consensus? View of industry veterans? Or your own preferences? It is easy to say that they should focus on the good stuff, but what weight does that statement have?

Ok, more specifically, I'd like to see 3 dimensional characters. I've seen too many shows where you have predictable character archetypes that kind of make you go "oh, I know how this show will end". I can't deal with that anymore. As for plot, the first requirement is for a show to HAVE a plot you see. Next would probably be consistency. As for anything beyond that, it's completely subjective.

I never mentioned originality in my post. Originality is good when you can get it, but if you can rehash a previously good show in a new way to show something different or make a point, I'd go for it.

I'm fine with most shows, it's just those that exist for absolutely no reason other than to make money that just annoys me to no end. As for parody shows like Lucky Star or Seitokai... Well... I can't really complain about those considering that they're just that - parodies. Otherwise, when I watch a show like K-On! that exists just to please the fan base yet tries to work some crappy plot in it for whatever reason, a part of my soul gets ripped off and torn into small pieces, never to return again.

^ I have to kinda agree with Mystlord, nowadays I just skip shows where the characters are so predictable and stuff. Which is why I loved Senjougahara (and before this, Ami from Toradora) so much.

And that K-ON! episode where Azu-nyan tries to leave the band and gets all emo and stuff.. god, that was the most frustrating episode of any anime I had seen recently (Endless Eight doesn't count).

I'm not sure if someone has posted this before me, but I'm not watching anything this season except for one show.

Durrarara! - This show has so so soooooo much potential right now. I mean, sure, it may seem to start of with the incredibly pathetic Mikado and the hyperactive Kida, but then you get the completely whacked up characters like Izaya and Shizuo. Seriously, who doesn't love a guy who throws vending machines around?

It may not seem like it, but I can assure you that once we get to about episode 8, things will begin to make sense, and become one heck of a roller coaster ride when all of the 9872394 plot lines converges into one coherent plot!

How can I be sure of this? Because the person who wrote this particular light novel series also wrote Baccano!, and equally awesome yet utterly underrated show. Unfortunately, Baccano! had the extremely bad luck to be aired at the same time as Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Code Geass (the first season),

So yeah, watch this show man! It's not like there's much else to watch. ^^

I wouldn't say it's exactly the same but it was a long time since I read the book. The main difference is that this is a science fiction world however...

I couldn't continue past the 2nd ep because I couldn't get past the idea that I knew what was going to happen and the book will probably be so goddamn superior in every imaginable way possible anyway.

It's still saved on my harddrive tho

I (still) don't understand why people can't separate the two. An anime is not a book, and a book is not an anime. Don't compare things from different mediums. I never had a thought about the book when I watched Gankutsuou...

Well what do you look for in a good anime, or in a good book for that matter? A coherent, well-thought out and paced plot? Interesting characters and character development? Dialogue? You find all of those in a written piece.

Animes of course have other factors such as sound, quality of voice acting, visual representation/production quality/art style, music... but while I do take note of these things when watching an anime, they take a backseat compared to plot, characters, and development.

Since the two medium overlap in those aspects (even though they have to be presented in two different fashion), I can't separate the two if one is based off of the other.

I guess one could argue that derivative works, if in a different medium, should be compared to only other works in their respective medium, but I disagree with that. The reason being that it's not an 'original work' anymore. The writers had something to go off of. It made their jobs that much easier, but that also means that they have that much going against them.

That said, when I rate on MAL I try to keep my ratings relative only to other works in the medium, but if I have a strong feeling towards a derivative or source work in another medium I admit that it's difficult to keep my ratings bias-free.

I'm trying to watch the second season of Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu...I have no clue why. I didn't even like the first season...actually it was ok as a guilty pleasure.

This second season is so fucking bad, though. I can only watch in like 1-2 minute blocks before doing something else a little while in utter disbelief at the dumb ass happenings and bullshit...what the fuck were the writers smoking...

God.

I'm watching Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 right now. The soundtrack has Koh Otani working on it (he composed the OST to Shadow of the Colossus) so the music impressed me right off the bat.

The story looks like it's probably going to end in tragedy, I'm fine with that. The main character is a bitch, but is a pretty realistic portrayal of a 7th grade girl going through teenage angst and lashing out at her parents/the world.

The animation is also done pretty well, I like this art style. It sort of reminds me of Dennou Coil, which is a good thing. I suggest it.

Tokyo Magnitude 8 was a solid show, but I could've done without the JGSDF/Japan emergency services plugs. I mean, I know they worked together to make the anime but they removed any sort of immersion built up to that point.
