If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

OMG NEW TRAILER

I don't know why, but I still trust KyoAni to make this amazing.

The only black spot on KyoAni's record is really Endless Eight. Otherwise, I don't expect them to pull the same thing. It's a movie for God's sake.

Then again, I can kind of see why they needed to do Endless Eight. The first indication from them that they were planning this movie was back in late 2007. If they hadn't planned season 2 before then... What a conflict O_O.

February 6th everyone who can understand Japanese. Mark your calendars

There was an interview with one of the original directors/producers who left Haruhi talking about the Endless 8. He said they could only make an absolute maximum of 3 episodes for the Endless 8 arc, but they didn't listen to him.

Seriously, wtf is it with Haruhi that ropes in its fans and never lets go. When I stand back and try to compare it to similarly themed anime, the only really exceptional part is the original 6 episode arc of Melancholy. I hate how this new trailer is getting me so excited again. I almost feel guilty.

I know we've had this discussion before. I think it draws us in just because it's Haruhi. She leads the life that we all really want to lead, but we can't. Some Anime feels very much like like an escape from reality, and Haruhi is one of those titles.

That is the reason I was obsessed with the Haruhi series throughout 8th grade. It was perfect escape from the horrors of middle school. I remember almost bursting out in tears when I finished all the Haruhi books in 20 days.

Hi. This is my first post in the anime thread. I just finished watching Kanon 2006 and I wanted to commentate it a bit.

Are the writers of that anime completely sadistic or what? I cried like a fucking 10 year old girl a dozen time! I've watched about 10 animes before, but none of them have been even that close to make me feel something about the characters. The twists were, most of the time, mind-blowing. The characters were incredibly well-developed and I liked them all. Nothing annoyed me in that anime, unlike most animes. The beginning felt a bit boring, but it was totally worth it in the end. I'm really really happy to have watched this anime.

If you didn't watch it yet, go watch it. Now.

If you enjoyed Kanon, I'd also recommend KyoAni's AIR and Clannad / After Story, especially the two Clannad seasons (if you thought Kanon was sad, AS will take you for one HELL of a ride. Watched the whole season in one sitting, was crying for more or less the whole time). And yes, the writers at Key are sadistic SOBs for being able to make people cry uncontrollably >_>

Yeah, I'm convinced that everyone who works at Key is a bastard.

Watching Seitokai as suggested. It's pretty much what I expected, and I'm loving it. It's so short though... Definitely not a fan of these 12/13 episode seasons.

I like your suggestions! I just researched a lot in the thread and it seems that most people prefer Clannad over Kanon. I'll watch this. Thank you!

In order of recommendation level. Grouped in categories:

Highly Recommended
Kimi ni Todoke - Starts out a little slow, then it turns into THE best anime of the season. (Okay, a little biased here, but it's definitely recommended).
Darker than Black - Like #1? You'll like #2.
Seitokai no Ichizon - I hold that this anime could have been better, but it's definitely recommended anyway.
Railgun - Obviously recommended.

Recommended
Letter Bee - Another consistently good anime. I would recommend it from this season.

Maybe recommended
Inuyasha - Watch if you liked the original. It doesn't leave you hanging (I hope).
Asura Cryin' 2 - Not much of an improvement on the first, but might be worth checking out if you watched the first one.
Blue Literature - A little inconsistent from episode to episode, and I'm betting that they cut down on the source material a lot, but worth checking out.

Ecchi/Fanservice/Harem
Nyan Koi - If you're into Harem, do check this one out. It is rather cliche, but it's consistent.
Kampfer - Fanservice. Skip otherwise.
Heaven's Lost Property - For the ecchi fanservice guys...

Skip
11eyes - Below average.
Kobato - Very, very slow. It's slower than Air for God's sake. Read the manga instead.

Pending judgment
Armed Librarians - I originally would not have recommended this, but it's suddenly gotten decent. I'd say wait until the entire series finishes before checking this one out.

Clannad.

Wrong. Clannad After Story.

And if you think either of THOSE are bad, try Grave of the Fireflies. Most heart wrenching thing I've ever seen. Such a beautiful yet tragic movie.

Yeah, Grave of the Fireflies ranks an all time high on that depressing chart. Key has been staying off that depression path though like I've said multiple times, Rewrite might be a return to that though...

I'd disagree with Kobato, I feel like it is decently paced. Then again, I am one of the few people in this thread that suggested Aria is fine to watch normally. Oh, also, it is a manga from CLAMP.

11eyes...I swear someone is out to get these visual novel/eroge turned anime, first chaos;head gets completely butchered, now 11eyes manage to look fine for 3~4 episodes then somehow completely screw itself over too. The ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory is almost impressive.

I really don't know what might've been done better about Seitokai, the art makes no difference (maybe because I am used to the light novel illustrations), the pacing fine, in all I really have nothing to complain about it. Personally I feel that Deen did quite a good job to capture that idle conversation air that the original has, it is slightly more subdued than the text would suggest, but that isn't all that bad. It could've devoted more time to each little joke, but that's more an issue of the number of episodes. My only complaint would probably be that Lilicia doesn't get enough airtime (more Noto Mamiko please), but it isn't like she gets mentioned all that often in the first place. So...eh, it would feel a lot different if someone else...probably JC staff...does Seitokai, but I am not sure it'd really be better than how Deen has done it.

I'd recommend Blue Literature in spite of what I said about it when Shauni brought it up last page or two, better to have exposure than none at all, these be good works done well with a ton of cash and star power thrown at it.

Oh wow I just confused CLAMP with Key for whatever reason. Fixed.

It might be a little of my F/SN disappointment bias, but I feel that Studio Deen just doesn't do animation properly. I mean I watched an episode of Nyan Koi! and found the animation better than Seitokai. Not only that, but I also found the show a little inconsistent at points, where it didn't emphasize a joke enough, inserted a scene in a weird place, etc. I also would have liked to see an OP or ED that totally blew my mind or was addictive (I'm thinking Lucky Star and Haruhi here), but unfortunately Deen went low budget on those, so I was a bit disappointed at that.

That's not to say that Studio Deen did a bad job; I just feel that the series would be just overall better if another studio did it (I wish KyoAni did it, so, so much).

Meh, some of those things are kind of hard to wish for. Attempts for insane OPs can just as well be a flop, though KyoAni has a good track record. Emphasis of jokes are fine for me, so I'd blame individual preferences and English, etc. A higher budget might make it look more polished, but eh...the improvement wouldn't be all that big imo.

That said, last Fujimi Fantajia novel that went to KyoAni was FMP if memory serves, been quite a while since KyoAni became essentially Key animation studios.

Ok since this is at the top again I think is a good time to ask for a few recommendations. I like war/assasin style anime, kinda lika samurai X, hellsing, record of lodoss war, macross, etc.

I'm not really into that depressing stuff so many of you seem to enjoy, I also don't fancy anything with a soap opera style like singing or high-school related stuff (although I'll admit I've watched Fullmetal Fumoffu and it was really funny).

So can anyone point me to good anime with lots of blood, deaths, magic, vampires, serial assasins, killings, machine guns and rock and roll? I would greatly appreacite it. (if you have a long list you can always pm me
