Also Naruto is pretty bad, and should be discussed in the Naruto topic.

So I just started watching FMA and I'm up to episode 14 and I have to say, I haven't watched an anime as good since the second season of ghost in the shell. So many manly tears :<

Got bored, so I started reading the Full Metal Panic: Sigma manga, and the Muv-Luv Alternative manga.
Apparently the FMP: Sigma manga has gotten quiet far, about to start either the second to last, or the last LN volume. So while I will still forever be depressed that there won't be an anime version of Continuing on my Own or Burning One Man Force, I can at least read them in manga form!
Sigma starts in Ending Day by Day/The Second Raid. I've been amused by some of the slight differences between the LN, the anime, and now the manga, with some things here. First one was this guy named Bluno:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/WThL4.png) Same for both the LN and the anime. He kinda got a huge makeover in the manga. Took me a while to actually realize that it was supposed to be the same character. The manga's take on Bluno: + Show Spoiler +![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/rlfCe.jpg) lolol they made him a chick. Its worth noting that the events with him... errr... her play out the same as they did in the LN/anime. Bluno in the manga is a lesbian, goes to a room to get it on with Mao, and then is owned. lol.
Second change was the twins, although not quiet as big as the change with Bluno. In the Light Novels, the twins were male chinese (iirc) assassins, IIRC. I don't think the LN had any art of them. The Second Raid turned the twins into these two:
![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/jzO4p.jpg) So the twins got turned into girls, who also were incestuous lesbians. This is the manga's take on those two characters: + Show Spoiler +![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/zm5Og.jpg) ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/8zKv1.jpg) Other than their change in design (and the fact that they are Western), what they actually do isn't much different from what happened in the LN, at least as far as I've read so far. Aka no making out and such. I can't say I have a problem with the change in design, since both are now really hot lol. The fate of the one that went after Chidori is just slightly different. + Show Spoiler +In the LN, the Alastor or w/e picked him up by the neck, broke it, and then shot him through the heart. IIRC that happened in the anime too, although I don't remember her getting shot there. In the manga, she is picked up by the leg, and essentially blown in half: ![[image loading]](http://i.imgur.com/aArDK.jpg) Will keep reading. MUST SEE SOUSUKE IN A SAVAGE.
And for Muv-Luv Alternative, its a pretty good adaption. The translated part is up to about the part where + Show Spoiler +they develop XM-3, or whatever that new TSF operating system was called. So a little bit before the Coup arc. Pacing, they have done a really good job IMO, cutting out alot of the stuff that Spazer didn't like when he read the VN, but still getting the points and such across. Same stuff happens, although some stuff gets told out of order for the sake of pacing (I guess thats the reason, anyway). Isumi's Valkyries show up ALOT sooner than they did in the VN as well, although mostly as cameos, like a page or two here or there showing what they had been doing behind the scenes and stuff. I gotta say, one of the things I'm liking most about the manga so far is a few character designs that bugged the hell out of me in the VN are alot better now. Chizuru in particular. Her ugly, huge, bushy eyebrows are gone, so she looks 10000x better now: + Show Spoiler + The Manga does assume you know Takeru's circumstances a bit in the manga, but IMO it does a good job giving flashbacks or narrating plot points concerning Extra/Unlimited if you hadn't already read them. I think that Muv-Luv Unlimited manga is full translated, but never read that one. The translation is still really early into the VN, but if it keeps up this quality, and they decided to make an anime of Alternative after the Total Eclipse anime, then I will feel really good about it.
Also lol Meiya/Takeru: + Show Spoiler [NSFW sorta kinda] +

I was almost fooled for a second that they would just let the dad be the typical "I only look at one child" character.
Character development in this series is just so amazing. They mostly focused on Taichi, Empress, Kana-chan, and Retro-kun this episode. And I gotta say, there is still not ONE character in this series that I do not dislike. No matter how bad they may portray them to be in the beginning at the end they give you their side of the story and you suddenly develop a soft spot for them. I found Tsundere Retro-kun to be particularly cute xD
Also, Taichi is prolly the only anime guy I would go gay for. Yes homo. Im surprised Chihaya could resist his charm and handsomeness for this long.
I've really thought about recommending this to others. The thing that stops me is the 'forced drama' scenes in the first 3 episodes. Normal people don't act like that, and it makes it not believable and its actually painful to watch. I've gotta say, if they had just included those first 3 episodes in flashbacks and skipped the overacting this would be my #1 anime this season. But actually doing that would kill the style of the narrative. So I don't know really.
Chihayafuru is really really good if you get past the first few episodes is what I'm trying to say.

What scenes were so 'forced' in the first 3 episodes? I'm sorry but 99% of all anime is terrible at portraying characters normally or realistic. Key only makes 'forced' drama, yet isnt Clannad one of the most popular anime to date? People like that. It's a strange thing to be concerned of.

When they act so over the top it is painful to watch.

When did they act over the top? I'm curious, since I didn't notice.
Edit: Just marathoned Ergo Proxy yesterday and this morning. It was pretty good actually. I liked it.

So I was discussing this with some people on Vent the other day, made me think a bit.
Why do you watch anime? Not in a condescending "children's cartoons" tone, but as in, what draws you to it?
The three big things that we focused on were these:
1) Animation style. The art style is generally pleasing to watch (depending on show), simple enough to differentiate characters and places, but can be detailed enough for any art lover to enjoy.
2) Story style. While most American shows (and comics, cartoons, etc), have their characters and long-running timelines, they often don't have an overarching plot, usually just separate arcs based on season that often don't have anything to do with one another. Take Stargate for example. Great show, and there is a plot (stop Goa'uld from taking over the galaxy), but most episodes and sometimes arcs have nothing to do with this. Anime is usually self-contained and follows the story with little to no wandering, one structured plot/story with character development that ties in. This is my favorite, if the wall of text wasn't a clue.
3) This is the tricky one. It sounds sorta racist, but some people like it for the "japanese-y" style. Not as in weeaboo, per se, but they like the style of humor in anime, or the character archetypes, or something like that which is a cultural thing. Anime has a tenancy to "whiplash" tone and emotion. FMA, for example, will go from goofy humor to action to serious plot in the span of a few minutes in some scenes, which isn't something you see often in western shows/animation.
Do these describe why you like anime? Or is it something else?

In addition to what Requizen mentioned, I'll add
1.) Music. Anime can have some really sick soundtracks. Good soundtracks include those for Gundam Unicorn, Seikai no Monshou/Senki, Kara no Kyoukai. Also JAM Project.
2.) Derivatives. Successful anime can spawn a lot of different works in their franchise, some of which can be quite fun. Indeed a lot of anime themselves are just re-imaginings of some original content (Steins;Gate, Clannad, Bakemonogatari). So if you really love a world or franchise, there may be more to explore even after finishing a show. I'm personally the resident guy-who-fucking-loves-SRW.

+ Show Spoiler [guilty crown 11] +I really liked this effort. It fit the "Guilty Crown" title really well. Shu finally manning up and taking advantage of all of his friend's powers. T'was cool.

It just reminds me of my teenage years, and I love nostalgia. Plus the shows you see on TV now are just so god awful. I dont even touch my TV anymore, anime and gaming streams are all I need.

Time commitment and accessibility. English shows tend to be an hour long, which is a bit longer than my normal attention span, and I find it easier to get consolidated sources of opinions on anime more than TV shows that I can evaluate into fitting my tastes.
I also find that regular TV shows have a tendency to be bloated with excess stuff (filler, if you will) that make me lose interest. They also have a tendency to be more episodic, which I despise. I'll slink off to watch J-Dramas and such every now and then but I can't keep it up very long. Bear in mind of course that I watch less anime that most people; my total viewed just looks big because I've watched for a fair amount of time.
I have a similar issue with reading Japanese novels over English ones - it's simply easier for me to find novels that I might enjoy in Japanese due to better bibliographic organization.

+ Show Spoiler [Mashiro] +I'm watching the last episode. I'm so prepared for a random school days ending it ends up happening. >.>

The Toradora OVA was very nostalgic. + Show Spoiler +I can't believe he would bring a rice cooker in class. This part was so funny.
