Ok, who else is really happy that Mirai Nikki is getting an anime and its coming out this month. The manga was sick.

Yeah it should be great. Manga ending was pretty stupid though. Also, Yousei Teikoku and Faylan doing OP and ED songs :D

Also, anyone read the new manga Big Order from the author of Mirai Nikki? It has a very similar feel to Mirai Nikki, except the protagonist is not as wimpy. I hope the girl becomes another yandere.

Yeah, the ending was a little cheesy, but its the journey, not the destination lol. And I will check out Big Order.

Yuru Yuri

"Yuru Yuri" is a weird way to say Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector

As much yuri fan as I am I second that SRW OG2 is one of the best anime this year but i can't decide S;G was so good too

i second that, but then again, but i am biaised because I am a mega fan of the video games too

K, gonna write a bit explaining Horizon episode 1, because it saddens me to see how Sunrise decided to do it. Don't take me wrong, I understand, but when I say they crammed essentially 200 pages of action into one episode while leapfrogging some of the narratives, and this (presumably maybe 5-6 episodes) book is a long-ass 500 pages that are DENSE (because this author is really fucking good), yeah.

A bit about the world. We (or at least I am) are not sure about its exact relationship to Kawakami's previous work, Chronicles. Chronicles takes place around contemporary times, but their (our, this) world is considered like a negative-G, and there are seven? other dimensions all reliant on the same core G. The boundaries between these dimensions are crumbling, and because balance of negative and positive Gs were having some issues, the dimensions began a battle royale to "be the last one standing." The reason why we feel this work is related is because a lot of the species and races we see in Horizon appear to come from these other dimensions, ie. one of the dimensions was one in which words held physical power, and that world was inhabited by dragons. You might remember the dragon who tried to swoop in as an attack (the second feint). There is also carry-over terminology, for instance Jud (Judgement) is an affirmative based on the Bible, which was "our" world's secret organization's method for saying affirmative. Amusingly, the majority of the Horizon world uses Testament due to the rise of I believe Protestants? sorry not very knowledgeable about religious history and their terminology. Very few of the Horizon characters use Jud, but one notable one is the automata Musashi, who oversees operations of the mobile ship nation "Musashi" (where episode 1 takes place). Over vols 1 and 2 (books 1-4) Eca surmised that Musashi might be a remnant of the Chronicles era. I don't know.

Never the less, onward to Horizon itself. Episode 1 takes place on the mobile ship nation "Musashi," a collection of some four? ships that are connected via synthetic rope and bridges. Using state-of-the-art defensive technology they manage to be their own thing. Why? Because the collective known as "the far east" bitterly lost in a war and had their political strength stripped from them - think post WW2 Japan. I'm fairly sure this is the historical reference for their situation. Along with stripping them of their home soil, the far east's political center had placed upon them a number of restrictions, both literally as well as symbolically. The notable one that's mentioned in episode 1 (Neshinbara during the initial lecture) is how Musashi, which technically has become "the capital of the far east" has an age restriction on their "student body." This is essentially another term for their military strength. While other world powers have no age restriction on their military, Musashi is only capable of fielding people up to the age of 18. Beyond this, older folk are able to serve in their personal defense force, but this is a mostly symbolic, defensive unit. Yes, post-WW2 Japan indeed.

To compound things, in order to display to the world their humble and non-threatening stature (particularly when you consider that their mobile fortres- I mean mobile nation is extremely strong standalone) they have a "tradition" of instilling puppet kings. The "main character," Aoi Toori was essentially placed on this seat as "class president" because he's stupid and useless. Part of the maddening draw of Toori as a character (as Eca and I have argued bitterly over this) as well as the curiosity in Horizon is how despite being utterly retarded and useless, everyone looks up to him, and as the reader you can't help but feel drawn to him as well. He is a very good "king." Politically though, he is not yet the ruler of Musashi. You'll get more on that around ep 9 (prediction-wise).

The last key point is that in this world (as insinuated in the narrative at the end of the episode), for various reasons this world has turned to reenacting history, as a means of preventing the destruction of the world. By re-enacting history, they produce a "predictable future," and thus avoid the end of the world. They do this by generally following "the Testament." Mmhmm. However what many of the leaders secretly know, is that the Testament is sort of running out of filled-out pages. "The end is coming," quite literally. This has lead to an environment of fear.

Enter Musashi, now currently entering territory that was used to be called Japan. Yes, Musashi is returning home. Several powers that be would like to know what the fuck they're doing going back to The Forbidden Lands, especially given that Musashi was not supposed to be on friendly terms. They did not, however, show these other powers in episode 1. Fine, they didn't really talk about them yet at this point in the book. But do note that they are treading dangerous waters.

The teacher, aka "Real Amazoness," is one of the very remaining members of the old Japanese army, who is still on Musashi. Most have left. She is also the lone instructor at the school (AFAIK) that has any sort of martial prowess. As such, she takes it upon herself to teach her class in "different" ways. More than most other people, she understands how steep the wall is for the students, and wants them to gain confidence in their own abilities while keeping an open mind to "outside of the box thinking". This is because when they go out, they must always find ways to "get around the norm" to get what they need. After all, they stand no chance in a frontal war. Obviously. Thus, while their school is (amusingly) supposed to be quite normal, her classes are not, and thus her "physical education" class being a "hit me if you can." This serves a different purpose in that it illustrates how big the power level is between the age-restricted military power of Musashi compared to an ex-soldier of a LOSING ARMY, even if she was one of the most elite warriors in general.

The chase scene itself is somewhat straightforward, but unfortunately the anime knocks out a lot of the subtle strategies that were being pulled out. It was Kawakami's way of introducing you to the characters that make up Musashi's student body. While not perfect, hell, it's pretty effective. Adele (glasses, lance) is like your 1940s tank. Slow as shit but pretty tanky relatively speaking. She's not actually wearing her full armament though, so all that leg strength kicks in to get her all the way up front. No comment on Echo- I mean the Indian. Imagine dividing the class into three parts: combat, spells, and support. None of them are fast enough to catch up to Real Amazoness. Adele manages to do this, and stalls her enough so that the class speedsters (the yuri couple) are able to swoop in and fire suppression. The end result is that it slows down Real Amazoness enough for the combat group to catch up. They pull their own little gambit. Tenzo yells out a challenge (not befitting a ninja), which tricks Real Amazoness into thinking he's going in for a fight. Then Ukki would dive in from the sunlight with perfect timing. If even that fails, then Noriki can come in for a third punch. They're soundly defeated. But in order to deal with the three, Real Amazoness gets forced into pulling a sheath gambit (unsheath -> pull it back with teeth -> let go of sword -> sword gets punched in the direction she wants to run, but she still had to stop and then re-accelerate). This allows the slower combat tier (primarily just Asama at this point) to catch up, who gets a pretty nifty shot off a seeker arrow (extremely high-tier prayer involved, she'd prepared it all night lol) but gets chafed. This then allows the spell casters to catch up, but really at this point it's only the yuri couple, so they fire off a big spell (not full power because it'd punch some big holes), but miss, and then that's that - they can't really get her once she crosses that bridge, because the ship she crosses onto is too open.

Some of the best combat characters never make it into combat because they simply run too slow. Most notable being Nate (the one that chucks the lance).

So the end result is that you get introduced to like 7? characters to some extent. Fun.

As far as we can imagine, the next couple of episodes will involve a lot of talking heads, double the cast, and get you a lot more background on their situation, including Musashi's situation and their contact with Japan. Depending on how storyboarding goes one of the most badass manly characters should show up either next episode or the one after :>

For those wondering about Toori, he'll get some more airtime next episode (I think), but in general it's really hard to get much airtime of Toori and Horizon, as they've both got a relatively reserved role for a long, long time.

Edit:
In the book, when Marga and Knight go in for their primary spell attack on Oriotorai, their flight takes them perilously close to the "aerial boundary" of Musashi. This causes their own "wall-guards" so to speak as well as IIRC KPA Italia's gunners to swing their armament at the two. While preparing their spell, they complain to each other that "it's rude because they'd never try to escape Musashi" and talk about how they'd like to do a homo doujinshi about the gunners.

Yep.

Wish it was Shaft.

Hi guys, could any of you recommend some manga for me? Couldn't find a general manga thread or anything so I guess here's as good a place to ask as any. (if there is one link plz)

I'm looking for something to read on the train to work in the mornings. I'd like it to be finished, and i think at the moment I want something with some dark humour, maybe some drama, etc. Reading welcome to the NHK at the moment for example. I'll read anything you guys suggest though, romance, comedy, action whatever, though to start you off I've previously read and enjoyed pluto, legend of the strongest man kurosawa, hoshi no samidare, planetes, and sanctuary.

All suggestions welcome (although try and say a bit about it rather than just giving me a name).

hmm...I would suggest Rurouni Kenshin, Hikaru no Go, and Akira. For non-finished ones I would suggest "gasp" Mahou Sensei Negima!. If you decide to read MSN!, don't drop until around the 50 chapter mark. There are vast differences between chapter 1 and chapter 300.

About Horizon....I'm still confused. However, not as much.

Yes, I'd definitely agree fanservice was awesome. Ofcourse it's just one element which made those animes really special to me.

Gonna check your suggestions when I get home. =D Yesterday watched REC and bakemonogatari in one sit. Today another series. ^^

Hmm based on your preferance Oyasami PunPun is perfect for you but its not completed (only 90 chapters so far). Just keep reading you wont be disapointed even if it looks silly at first.

Onani Master Kurosawa is preety good too and its finished. Its about a boy that mastrubates in school just what could go wrong

Hotel is the best oneshot you will ever read.

20th Century Boys and Monster are from the same mangaka that wrote Pluto and they are better than Pluto in my opinion.

Watashitachi no Shiawase na Jikan , Voices of a Distant Star are short but bittersweet romance series. Mars is preety much the best romance manga i've read. You get everything that a seinen romance manga should need.

Sanctuary is one of my all time favorite mangas so im recommending Akumetsu. This one is like a mix between Sanctuary and Death Note. Its really acton oriented and quite gory.

Phew I'm done with all those links. I hope this will help you little bit better with deciding what to read with little bit more info for you ^^

katanagatari, no fan service though.

And thanks Southlight. The battle strat was pretty straightforward\ in general but when they introduced Toori it became a complete "wtf is he talking about".

Id expect them to go ahead and clarify tbh, but still an idea of the setting is good to have.

To add onto Uta's post and respond to him, since I recently reread AHEAD/Chronicle . In chronicles there are 10 Gs in additional to our own. Technically I guess Jud. and Tes. both spawned from our world, though Tes. would be more or less from the victors of the era.

I didn't say that Musashi is a remnant of the Chronicle/AHEAD era, I meant that these shipbound automata seems to be modeled after Noa. Though the technology from Musashi is practically overtechnology from the past at this point.

Musashi is 8 ships after the revamp from iirc 10 years ago to present time. The thing with the student body idea kinda needs to be explained by the show, hopefully soon, because Neshinbara just spewed out the line about the restriction on the Far East with zero context as to why it is a restriction.

Mmhmm. However what many of the leaders secretly know, is that the Testament is sort of running out of filled-out pages. "The end is coming," quite literally. This has lead to an environment of fear.

Actually pretty sure it is public knowledge that the Testament has stopped producing new pages about how history should be for a while. If memory serves, it is supposed to go some 100 years ahead of its time, not sure how short of that we are at this point. Can check but lazy.

Musashi's political situation atm can take half an episode to explain tbh, it is a huge mishmash of Japanese sengoku jidai history and European history (world history to an extent but focused on the European front)

The rest mostly storyboarding question~

Oh the bushin around Musashi at this point is iirc Tres Espana's,
