@Cobalt: Then watch Elfen Lied and see if they still don't respond. Or you could keep the first 7 minutes of the first episode on a permanent loop. ![]()

EDIT: To clarify, Some of my major concerns are that at some point, the concept has been absolutely beaten to death. I'd like to know where that line is, so that I don't cross it. Do any of the series or mangas provide enough original content to justify my time? I'm reading .hack//XXXX purely out of frustration with the games, and as far as I understand, that story concept is simply rehashed with //G.U., //Roots, and however many other items they've released. Is that correct? Is any of it good, or is it all stretched too thin?

Which are worth watching (if any)? What are your overall thoughts on the franchise? Uhh... The .hack series is generally bashed by people who either a) haven't played the games, or b) have played the games and watched the animes and still doesn't get it. In any case, .hack//sign is the best that you will get from the series, games and anime, so don't expect anything magical from the others. First I'll tell you straight up that .hack//sign is one of my favorite animes. So I'm biased there. Starting with .hack//Liminality, I will say that this 4 episode OVA is just slightly below sign in terms of overall awesomeness, only because of its shortness. I highly recommend you watch it. .hack//Legend of Twilight was just bleh. The directors apparently did a 180 degree flip when they heard criticism that .hack//sign was too serious. The show pretty much becomes a childish adventure that frankly doesn't really match the level of production and storyline as .hack//sign. I'll also say that there's some sort of sexual tensions between the two main characters (who are brother and sister), so I've heard this one variously referred to as .hack//Incest. Don't watch it. Ok so onto the .hack conglomerate series (basically .hack franchise round 2). .hack//Roots returns to the feel of sign, so you'll probably want to check this one out. It's definitely a lot more stand alone than sign, so if you haven't played the games, you won't really miss out on a lot. It's definitely worthy as a sequel to sign, though it has a longer start up period than sign (as in the story doesn't really start until like the 10th episode), but the beginner episodes are essential for understanding the backdrop, which is the whole point of watching the series. On par with sign IMO. Final one is the .hack//G.U Trilogy. It's a movie, and the "Trilogy" part comes from the fact that it's based off of the games. This one can be a watch or an avoid, depending on your tastes. They basically put everything action and romance and whatever that could have been in Roots - basically anything that a mainstream anime series would have - into a 90 minute movie. I don't think it was very effective, especially because you NEED to have played the G.U. games and watched Roots to truly understand whats going on. Too much stuff going on in too little time. Oh, and the music and voice acting are sub par compared to the anime. If you want a condensed version: Watch Liminality and Roots. Ignore Twilight. Watch G.U. if you want eye candy. Your ears won't get the same treatment. Edit: As a franchise, it's very inconsistent. The games themselves are okay, and sign and roots and Liminality are good while Twilight sucks major ass. There's not much in terms of manga for the series, as most of the storyline is conveyed through the games, the anime, and the novels. If you can get your hands on some of the novels, I suggest you read them. They're fairly good. All of them.

Lain is one of the very few masterpieces regarding anime. But does this mean if I like Lain I'll also enjoy Wolf's Rain? I'll give it a chance then. Oh and thanks Mystlord for the explanation about the .hack series, I've always been confused whether or not I should watch the rest of them (except SIGN of course which I loved instantly). I've also seen Liminality and while I agree that it's worth watching, it felt silly at times. The music weighed up a lot there. So yeah, I'll give Roots a try.

First I'll tell you straight up that .hack//sign is one of my favorite animes. So I'm biased there. Well then, we're probably going to have similar opinions on the franchise I have the collector's edition.Starting with .hack//Liminality, I will say that this 4 episode OVA is just slightly below sign in terms of overall awesomeness, only because of its shortness. I highly recommend you watch it. Part way through it now. I'm refreshing myself on the game storyline in order to better see the parallels, but it doesn't seem like it's all that necessary. I just wish the dungeon crawling wasn't so frustrating, because otherwise the games would be great. .hack//Legend of Twilight was just bleh. The directors apparently did a 180 degree flip when they heard criticism that .hack//sign was too serious. The show pretty much becomes a childish adventure that frankly doesn't really match the level of production and storyline as .hack//sign. This is what I had heard and feared. Chibi characters and mostly humor/action? That's not really in sync with the ideas behind the franchise. I enjoyed Sign and Luminality and only got through a bit of Roots, how much of that is because I love Kajiura Yuki's music I don't know...well, Sign and Luminality, as others have said, are quite good. On another note, Fall season starts early with...um...Queen's Blade season 2. Yeah, nevermind, nothing started yet ./shifty eyes
