If you come in here looking for "anime recommendations" then please refer to this chart before posting: Anime Recommendations (as of may 2014). We also have an IRC channel called #tladt where we all hang out. The channel is on Rizon, not QuakeNet! Feel free to check it out. TLADT discord is Discord.gg

For currently airing anime, please see Anichart.net

Just start watching a non-loli anime one day. Not something retarded like Naruto, but maybe Bleach or something like that. Or you can watch a more sophisticated anime like Wolf's Rain. Show them the diversity of anime, then go back to your loli ways.

Or you could give up your loli ways.

... Yeah right

What's Wolf's Rain about? :x If it's considered sophisticated, haha~

(Currently watching the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei OVAs - or rather, almost finished with them - quite good imo.)
I have nothing to put here. Obzy#1821 on Bnet.

I've been trying to watch Wolf's Rain a couple of times now, haven't got past the first episode yet. Not that it's difficult or anything, I'm just hesitating because some people say it's not that good. What do you guys think?

I liked Wolf's Rain up until the last couple of episodes.

Since I've gotten here, I've watched both TTGL and Paranoia Agent. My floormates didn't exactly respond, haha.

But honestly, it's really not that big a deal. It's not like I'm missing out on much.

gogo violent anime like the new Fist of the North Star OVAs:
Shin Kyuseishu Densetsu Hokuto no Ken : Kenshiro Densetsu
Shin Kyuseishu Densetsu Hokuto no Ken Yuria Den
Shin Kyuseishu Densetsu Hokuto no Ken Raoh Gaiden : Gekito Hen

Also others like the new Hellsing Ultimate OVAs, Berserk, Grappler Baki, Hajime no Ippo, Vampire Hunter D(Who didnt like those 2 movies!?), Dead Leaves, Ninja Scroll, Afro Samurai, Ghost in the Shell Movies + Series, Highlander, Sword of the Stranger, Macross ZERO, Straight Jacket(short OVA but was pretty cool), X the movie, Blue Gender, Apple SEED

Hmm, more cool ones i liked;
Heroic Age, Furi Kuri, Tengen Toppa Gurren-lagann, Tekkon Kinkreet, Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy, Mushishi (not action but a fuckin awesome anime regardless), Perfect Blue, Paprika, Gungrave, KARAS, Akagi(Tohai Densetu Akagi ~ Yamini Maiorita Tensai shown on animenfo.com), Elfen Lied, Black Lagoon..

i could go on but that would require too much effort.

Wolf's Rain was an amazing series. Very well done. The end is sad. Not Clannad sad, but a much, much deeper sad. Melancholic would be a good word.

@Cobalt: Then watch Elfen Lied and see if they still don't respond. Or you could keep the first 7 minutes of the first episode on a permanent loop.

As a longtime fan of .hack//SIGN, I've heard a lot of diverging opinions on the other .hack shows, and I'm hesitant to watch a bad one and have it dirty my image of the .hack universe. Which are worth watching (if any)? What are your overall thoughts on the franchise?

EDIT: To clarify,

Some of my major concerns are that at some point, the concept has been absolutely beaten to death. I'd like to know where that line is, so that I don't cross it. Do any of the series or mangas provide enough original content to justify my time? I'm reading .hack//XXXX purely out of frustration with the games, and as far as I understand, that story concept is simply rehashed with //G.U., //Roots, and however many other items they've released. Is that correct? Is any of it good, or is it all stretched too thin?

Uhh... The .hack series is generally bashed by people who either a) haven't played the games, or b) have played the games and watched the animes and still doesn't get it. In any case, .hack//sign is the best that you will get from the series, games and anime, so don't expect anything magical from the others. First I'll tell you straight up that .hack//sign is one of my favorite animes. So I'm biased there.
Starting with .hack//Liminality, I will say that this 4 episode OVA is just slightly below sign in terms of overall awesomeness, only because of its shortness. I highly recommend you watch it.
.hack//Legend of Twilight was just bleh. The directors apparently did a 180 degree flip when they heard criticism that .hack//sign was too serious. The show pretty much becomes a childish adventure that frankly doesn't really match the level of production and storyline as .hack//sign. I'll also say that there's some sort of sexual tensions between the two main characters (who are brother and sister), so I've heard this one variously referred to as .hack//Incest. Don't watch it.

Ok so onto the .hack conglomerate series (basically .hack franchise round 2).
.hack//Roots returns to the feel of sign, so you'll probably want to check this one out. It's definitely a lot more stand alone than sign, so if you haven't played the games, you won't really miss out on a lot. It's definitely worthy as a sequel to sign, though it has a longer start up period than sign (as in the story doesn't really start until like the 10th episode), but the beginner episodes are essential for understanding the backdrop, which is the whole point of watching the series. On par with sign IMO.

Final one is the .hack//G.U Trilogy. It's a movie, and the "Trilogy" part comes from the fact that it's based off of the games. This one can be a watch or an avoid, depending on your tastes. They basically put everything action and romance and whatever that could have been in Roots - basically anything that a mainstream anime series would have - into a 90 minute movie. I don't think it was very effective, especially because you NEED to have played the G.U. games and watched Roots to truly understand whats going on. Too much stuff going on in too little time. Oh, and the music and voice acting are sub par compared to the anime.

If you want a condensed version: Watch Liminality and Roots. Ignore Twilight. Watch G.U. if you want eye candy. Your ears won't get the same treatment.

Edit: As a franchise, it's very inconsistent. The games themselves are okay, and sign and roots and Liminality are good while Twilight sucks major ass. There's not much in terms of manga for the series, as most of the storyline is conveyed through the games, the anime, and the novels. If you can get your hands on some of the novels, I suggest you read them. They're fairly good. All of them.

wolf's rain made me want to hammer rusty nails into my eye sockets. starts interesting but rapidly falls into a downward spiral into idiocy. i made the mistake of giving it a chance and continuing to watch it as it got worse and worse
better than serial experiments lain though, but thats not saying much

(i realize i probably offended everyone in this thread, but SE lain and wolf's rain are the two most unspeakably awful series that everyone loves and i can't understand why)

Ohohoho stop trolling you Australian. Lain is one of the very few masterpieces regarding anime.

But does this mean if I like Lain I'll also enjoy Wolf's Rain? I'll give it a chance then.

Oh and thanks Mystlord for the explanation about the .hack series, I've always been confused whether or not I should watch the rest of them (except SIGN of course which I loved instantly). I've also seen Liminality and while I agree that it's worth watching, it felt silly at times. The music weighed up a lot there.

So yeah, I'll give Roots a try.

Well then, we're probably going to have similar opinions on the franchise I have the collector's edition.

Starting with .hack//Liminality, I will say that this 4 episode OVA is just slightly below sign in terms of overall awesomeness, only because of its shortness. I highly recommend you watch it.

Part way through it now. I'm refreshing myself on the game storyline in order to better see the parallels, but it doesn't seem like it's all that necessary. I just wish the dungeon crawling wasn't so frustrating, because otherwise the games would be great.

.hack//Legend of Twilight was just bleh. The directors apparently did a 180 degree flip when they heard criticism that .hack//sign was too serious. The show pretty much becomes a childish adventure that frankly doesn't really match the level of production and storyline as .hack//sign.

This is what I had heard and feared. Chibi characters and mostly humor/action? That's not really in sync with the ideas behind the franchise.

I'll also say that there's some sort of sexual tensions between the two main characters (who are brother and sister), so I've heard this one variously referred to as .hack//Incest. Don't watch it.

Thanks. This is exactly what I was looking for. I'll have to see if I can find the novels somewhere.

I'd say that I wouldn't count on it, except a lot of random novels see translation, so yeah.

I enjoyed Sign and Luminality and only got through a bit of Roots, how much of that is because I love Kajiura Yuki's music I don't know...well, Sign and Luminality, as others have said, are quite good.

On another note, Fall season starts early with...um...Queen's Blade season 2.

Yeah, nevermind, nothing started yet ./shifty eyes
